jmem.dll is a legacy application-support DLL. Available file metadata identifies it as a Win32, 32-bit DLL, although details can vary between releases and individual copies.

Historical Jasc installations place the file inside the application directory, for example:
C:Program FilesJasc Software IncPaint Shop Pro 7jmem.dll
C:Program FilesJasc Software IncAnimation Shop 3jmem.dll
Those paths are identification clues, not instructions to create the folders manually. Your copy may be under a different parent directory, depending on the product, Windows installation, language, or installation choices.
A 32-bit Jasc program on 64-bit Windows normally loads its application DLL from beside the program executable. The fact that Windows is 64-bit does not mean that the DLL should be replaced with a 64-bit version.

Reported third-party metadata describes a possible version, file size, and copyright range, but those fields are not an official specification for every copy. Do not use a matching-looking size or version number as proof that a download is safe.
What the error message usually means
The wording helps identify the failure, but it does not always identify the root cause.
“jmem.dll was not found” or “is missing”
Windows or the Jasc program cannot find the DLL where the application expects it. Common causes include an incomplete installation, accidental deletion, antivirus quarantine, or a shortcut pointing to a damaged program folder.
“The file jmem.dll is missing or corrupted”
The file may be absent, damaged, or the wrong file for that Jasc release. Replacing it with a copy from another product can create a second error, including an invalid-image or entry-point message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Error loading jmem.dll. The specified module could not be found”
This can mean that jmem.dll is missing. It can also mean that the DLL exists but one of its own dependencies is missing. Reinstalling the complete Jasc application is more useful than copying only the named file.
“The program can’t start because jmem.dll is missing from your computer”
This is the standard application-startup version of the same problem. Confirm the executable path, then repair that specific application.
“jmem.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This is a general Windows loader message. It can indicate corruption, an incompatible dependency, a mismatched architecture, or a DLL copied from a different Jasc release. The message alone does not prove which cause applies.
Fix 1: Repair the Jasc application
This is the quickest safe repair when the original installer is available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close the Jasc program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and then Apps & features.
- Find Paint Shop Pro, Animation Shop, or the affected Jasc product.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if the installer provides one of those options.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
If the program starts normally, the repair restored the application-local DLL and any related files it needed.
If there is no repair option, proceed to a reinstall. Before uninstalling, make sure you have the original installer or installation media and any product information required by that release.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Jasc product
Use the installer that belongs to the same product and release. Do not mix files from Paint Shop Pro and Animation Shop.
- Save any custom brushes, plugins, templates, or personal projects stored inside the program folder.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected Jasc application.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Scan the original installer or installation media with Windows Security before running it.
- Run the installer from trusted original media or a legitimate copy you already own.
- If the installer offers a destination folder, use the normal application location unless you have a specific reason not to.
- Start the program once installation finishes.
If jmem.dll was missing because the installation was partially removed, the program should now start. If the same error returns immediately, check antivirus history before trying random DLL copies.
Running the program once with administrator rights can help distinguish a permission problem from a missing-file problem:
- Right-click the Jasc shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
Administrator mode is not a replacement for reinstalling the application. If it makes no difference, turn the setting off unless the application genuinely requires it.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine an old executable or DLL because legacy software no longer meets current detection or reputation rules. Do not disable antivirus globally.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the Jasc program folder or
jmem.dll. - Expand an entry to view its path and detection details.
Only consider restoring the file when all of the following are true:
- The file came from your original, trusted Jasc installation.
- The application installation is still the one you intended to use.
- You have scanned the original installer or media.
- You understand the detection and are confident it is a false positive.
If you restore a quarantined file, repair or reinstall the complete application afterward where possible. Microsoft notes that restored files can be detected again. If the file is detected repeatedly, do not keep overriding the protection. Preserve the detection details and use a compatible replacement environment for the legacy application.
Fix 4: Remove a mismatched DLL
A manually copied jmem.dll can be worse than no DLL at all.
If you previously copied the file from another computer, another Jasc product, or a DLL download page:
- Close the Jasc program.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Check whether
jmem.dllis in that application folder. - If the file is the copy you added, move it to a temporary backup folder rather than deleting it immediately.
- Run the correct Jasc installer and choose Repair, or reinstall the product.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows folder, or a general shared DLL directory. Those locations are not the normal home for this application-local file and can create conflicts with other software.

An unverified copy may contain malware, belong to a different Jasc release, use the wrong architecture, or omit the other files the program needs. The safe source is the original Jasc installation media or installer for the affected product.
Fix 5: Check whether the application itself is orphaned
Sometimes the error appears after Jasc software has already been removed. In that case, Windows may still have a stale shortcut, startup entry, or file association.

Check the shortcut first:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Read the complete path in Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- If the folder no longer exists, delete the obsolete shortcut.
- Check the Startup folder by pressing Windows key + R, entering
shell:startup, and pressing Enter. - Remove only shortcuts that clearly point to the uninstalled Jasc program.
- Open Settings → Apps → Startup and disable an obsolete Jasc entry if one remains.
If the error occurs when double-clicking an old image file, right-click the file, choose Open with, and select a currently installed graphics program. This changes the file association instead of attempting to reconstruct an application you no longer use.
Fix 6: Use compatibility settings for old Jasc software
Restoring jmem.dll does not guarantee that the entire application will run on current Windows. Paint Shop Pro and Animation Shop are legacy programs, and a Windows upgrade can expose unrelated compatibility problems involving installers, permissions, display handling, or old dependencies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters on Windows 11.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the Jasc program from the list, or select Not Listed and browse to its executable.
- Apply the recommended settings.
- Test the program when prompted.
You can also configure the executable directly:
- Open the Jasc installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an older Windows mode offered by the dialog.
- Select Apply, then launch the application.
Change one setting at a time. If compatibility mode makes the program less stable, return to the previous setting. For persistent failures, use the application in a supported older Windows environment rather than weakening current system security.
Fix 7: Investigate a missing secondary dependency
If jmem.dll is present beside the Jasc executable but Windows still says that the specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be absent.
The safest process is:
- Confirm that
jmem.dllis in the correct application folder. - Run the original Jasc installer again.
- Choose Repair if available.
- Reinstall the same product release if repair is unavailable.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application before installing unrelated runtime packages.
Do not assume that Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will install or repair jmem.dll. There is no verified Microsoft redistributable for this Jasc-specific file. Those packages may matter to another error, but they are not the normal remedy for this DLL.
Windows Features are also usually unrelated. Do not enable random legacy components simply because the error names a DLL. If a Jasc installer explicitly requires a Windows feature, open Settings → System → Optional features → More Windows features, select the documented feature, and restart when prompted. Otherwise, leave Windows Features unchanged.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when symptoms support it
jmem.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC only when you also have broader Windows corruption symptoms, such as failures involving multiple built-in components or protected system files.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Jasc program again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components, not an ordinary third-party Jasc DLL. If they report that repairs were made but the Jasc error remains, return to repairing the Jasc installation.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is a poor substitute for repairing the parent application. If you want a guided scan that identifies broader Windows issues instead of manually comparing command output, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Jasc program remains the definitive fix for jmem.dll.
Fix 9: Check drivers only after a system change
Drivers are not the usual cause of a missing Jasc application DLL. Investigate them when the failure began immediately after a graphics-driver update, Windows upgrade, or other hardware-related change, especially if the program also shows display errors or crashes.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver date and version.
- Use Update Driver only if you have a trusted driver source or Windows Update offers one.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the Jasc application.
Do not remove a working driver merely because jmem.dll is missing. If several drivers are outdated, manually hunting versions across hardware vendors can be tedious and error-prone. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it does not replace the need to repair the Jasc application.
Fix 10: Consider System Restore after a recent change
If Paint Shop Pro or Animation Shop worked immediately before a driver installation, Windows update, or software change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace a proper Jasc reinstall, and it is not useful if no suitable restore point exists.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a general fix:
regsvr32 jmem.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs designed to register components through an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A DLL being named .dll does not make it a registrable component.
Most application-support DLLs are loaded directly by the program. Registering jmem.dll generally will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged installation, or resolve a missing dependency. Use the Jasc installer instead.
If reinstalling still fails
Collect the details before trying another repair:
- The complete error message.
- The Jasc executable path.
- The application name and release information shown by its installer or shortcut.
- Whether
jmem.dllexists beside the executable. - The Windows version.
- Any Windows Security detection or quarantine action.
- Whether the error began after an update, driver change, or uninstall.
If the DLL exists but the application still will not load, test the program in a compatible older Windows environment. If the application was uninstalled, remove stale shortcuts and file associations instead of adding a DLL to Windows system folders.
FAQ
Is jmem.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Jasc application software and should normally remain in the Jasc program directory.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which programs use jmem.dll?
The strongest historical identification points to Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Animation Shop. Do not assume that every release of either product contains identical files.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. A 32-bit Jasc application normally loads its matching application DLL from its own folder, even when running on 64-bit Windows.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not for jmem.dll itself. These packages are not verified sources for this Jasc-specific DLL.
Can I download a replacement DLL?
Avoid random DLL download sites websites. Restore the file from the original, trusted Jasc installer or matching installation media.
Is jmem.dll malware?
The filename alone proves neither malware nor safety. Verify the file’s location and provenance, and review Windows Security if antivirus has flagged it.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, may be corrupted, or may not match the application release. Repairing the complete Jasc installation is the correct next step.
Will SFC restore jmem.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while jmem.dll is a third-party application file.
Is old Jasc software compatible with Windows 11?
Compatibility is not guaranteed. Repair the application first, then use Windows compatibility settings or a suitable older Windows environment if the program still fails.
