As of October 8, 2026, Metacritic’s snapshot of John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando was mixed rather than unanimous: 72/100 from 41 critic reviews. Reviewers most often praised its co-op gunplay, zombie hordes, and drivable vehicles; the main reservations were a brief campaign, grindy progression, and a weaker fit for solo players.
What are the critic reviews for Toxic Commando?
Metacritic listed a 72 Metascore from 41 critic reviews on October 8, 2026, and labeled the consensus “Mixed or Average.” Its breakdown was 21 positive reviews, 20 mixed reviews, and zero negative reviews. That split points to a broadly qualified reception—not critics speaking with one voice or a consensus that the game is bad.
Metacritic also showed a 7.5/10 user score from 70 ratings in that same snapshot. CriticDB displayed a different aggregate: 73/100 across 21 reviews when checked. These are separate services with different review sets and counts, so each figure describes that service’s dated snapshot rather than a definitive lifetime score for the game. Metacritic’s Toxic Commando page and CriticDB’s listing are the sources for those figures.
What do critics like about the game?
Co-op shooting and fighting the hordes
The most consistent positive theme is the action with other players: satisfying-feeling shooting, large enemy waves, and hectic defense encounters that reward coordination. Metacritic’s review excerpts highlight gunplay, class skill trees, vehicle traversal, and the spectacle of battling hordes. CriticDB’s roundup likewise includes praise for teamwork, weapon variety, and the game’s B-movie horror tone.

TechRadar’s PC review calls the shooting satisfying and points to larger maps, vehicles, and cross-play with up to three friends as part of the appeal. Its discussion of the game’s shift from more linear missions to larger areas presents that change as added variety; it is a reviewer’s assessment, not proof that the design is wholly new. Vehicles add a different kind of mission activity
Toxic Commando combines zombie-shooter combat with drivable vehicles in larger, more open mission areas. TechRadar compares the vehicle mechanics to Saber Interactive’s MudRunner lineage. For players who like alternating between shooting, traversing terrain, and helping a team move through a mission, that mix is one of the game’s distinguishing attractions.

What are the main criticisms?
A campaign some reviewers found short
Campaign length is a recurring caveat, though it is not a universal verdict. TechRadar reviewer Dashiell Wood wrote, “The campaign is a little brief,” in a review published March 11, 2026. Readers seeking a lengthy story campaign should weigh that assessment before buying.
Progression and familiar genre structure
Reviewers also raised concerns about grindy progression and familiar mechanics. Metacritic’s included review excerpts mention a shallow story and characters, calls for progression refinements, and a recommendation that solo players look elsewhere. CriticDB’s roundup shows a range of reactions, including reservations about limited substance and repetitive structure. These are recurring criticisms in the reviewed coverage, not claims that every critic made them.
Is Toxic Commando worth it for solo players?
It may be a less convincing choice alone than with friends. Some reviewers specifically described solo play as a drawback, while the strongest praise centers on teamwork and co-op action. If you mainly play solo, the mixed aggregate score, brief-campaign criticism, and progression concerns are especially relevant; if you have a regular group and enjoy horde shooters, the cooperative combat and vehicles are more likely to matter.

TechRadar lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as platforms and reviewed the PC version. The reviewed sources do not provide a controlled comparison of platform performance, so they do not establish a best-performing version. Choose among the platforms you have access to and consider whether you are buying primarily for solo or co-op play.
