In a TODAY Show interview quoted by a report published October 6, 2026, Cena said he and WWE agreed it was the right time for him to step away at 49, after what he described as 23 years of physical service.
What John Cena said about returning to the ring
“I’m not going to perform again physically. There is no chance that I’ll perform again physically,” Cena said in the TODAY Show interview, according to the October 6 report. He added that he and WWE had discussed his future and agreed that, at 49, it was the right time to step away.
The report describes Cena’s WWE career as lasting almost 25 years. That is distinct from his own phrase, “23 years of physical service,” which refers to the time he says he physically performed for the business. The report attributes the quotation to the TODAY Show but does not provide an independently accessible recording or transcript.
Retirement from wrestling does not rule out other WWE roles
Not physically performing is separate from making other appearances. The report says Cena may still return to WWE in non-wrestling roles, including as an ambassador. It also describes the John Cena Classic, planned for December, as a live event built around nostalgia for his WWE character, with the audience deciding the champion. These are reported plans and could change.

How this compares with Cena’s earlier comments
In June, before his final match, Cena told Good Morning America “There is no way,” according to the October report. The same account says he avoided speaking in absolutes because he did not want to close off an opportunity. It also recalls his concern that returning for selfish reasons would disrespect the promise he had made to fans. This is historical context as relayed by the current report, rather than a separately reviewed GMA interview.

The report says Cena retired after losing by submission to Gunther in Washington, D.C., on December 13. It characterizes his WWE tenure as nearly 25 years; Cena’s separate description of 23 years refers specifically to his physical service.
