1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the film behind this headline is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, the case for another shot is straightforward: the 2007 Japanese theatrical feature is difficult to see, its home-release history remains unresolved, and the available record suggests an unusually compressed adaptation of the first five manga volumes. A legitimate re-release, with the rights and surviving materials clearly documented, would answer questions that fans cannot currently answer for themselves.
There is one important identification problem. The supplied “29 years later” wording does not fit the documented February 17, 2007 theatrical start, and the film’s intended subject has not been independently confirmed. The evidence below therefore treats the 2007 Phantom Blood film as the likely subject, not as a certainty.

What the overlooked film is
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood is a Japanese theatrical film reported by the Phantom Blood Archive as having opened on February 17, 2007. The Archive says it has had no release beyond its theatrical screenings and describes it as lost media. That wording should be read carefully: it documents the film’s public availability, not proof that every print, master, or private recording has disappeared.

The official JoJo portal describes the premise as a conflict built around the Stone Mask, an object associated with the ancient Aztecs. Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando grow up together in late-nineteenth-century England, and their relationship becomes entangled with the mask’s history. David Production’s official synopsis for the later television adaptation confirms the same basic story context, but it should not be used as evidence for the 2007 film’s exact scenes or editing.

The known credits include Junichi Hayama as director, character designer, and chief animation director; Katsuyuki Konishi as Jonathan Joestar; Hikaru Midorikawa as Dio Brando; and SOUL’d OUT performing the theme song, Voodoo Kingdom. The Archive presents these as the information currently known to it, so a future release should verify and expand the credit list rather than treating it as necessarily complete.
Why the film is so hard to evaluate
Most movies can be judged through a normal chain of evidence: a theatrical run, a home release, reviews, legal streaming, and copies that viewers can compare. This film breaks that chain. The Archive reports no later home release, and the original film website is defunct. Its history page says that site once carried trailers, general information, and interviews with staff, cast, Araki, and SOUL’d OUT; it also reports that parts of the film have been recovered. The official blog reportedly preserved concept art and promotional information. Those fragments can establish that the production existed, but they do not provide a stable, complete version for ordinary viewers.
That absence also explains why broad claims about reception are unsafe. No independently traceable box-office, audience, or review statistic has been established here. Nor is there a directly accessible interview transcript that supports a verified quotation from a named participant. Calling the film “the most overlooked” is therefore an editorial judgment about its current visibility, not a measurable consensus.
The adaptation problem: five volumes in about 90 minutes
The Archive estimates a runtime of roughly 90 minutes, based on multiple unnamed sources. Treat that figure as approximate rather than a definitive technical specification. Its FAQ also says the feature attempted to fit all five Phantom Blood manga volumes into that span. That premise alone implies severe selection: characters, scenes, transitions, and perhaps entire arcs would have to be removed or radically condensed.

Compression is not automatically a verdict on quality. A short film can choose a clear dramatic spine, while a longer serial can preserve more of the source’s cumulative detail. The useful question is what the film chose to prioritize and whether those choices remain legible. Without a complete, officially viewable version, claims that the movie is either a misunderstood masterpiece or an irredeemable failure go beyond the available evidence.
What a compressed structure would need to accomplish
- Establish the Stone Mask and its ancient association without delaying the central relationship.
- Make Jonathan and Dio’s shared upbringing understandable enough that their later conflict has emotional weight.
- Show how the mask changes the story’s rules and stakes.
- Give the feature a coherent progression instead of treating five volumes as a checklist of incidents.
- Preserve the identity of Phantom Blood even when supporting characters or connective scenes are reduced.
These are criteria for judging the adaptation, not claims about scenes that have not been verified. A restoration or re-release would finally allow viewers to test them against the film itself.
What is known about a home release
The Archive reports that a DVD version was being developed after the theatrical run with Araki’s assistance. It further reports that Hayama later said Shueisha took the film assets and said it would handle them and make the material presentable, after which, according to the Archive’s account, Shueisha went silent. This is an archive’s relay of an interview, not a transcript independently reviewed here.
That history leaves several questions open:
- Whether a finished DVD master was ever completed.
- Which film, audio, subtitle, promotional, and production materials still exist.
- Who currently controls each relevant right and physical element.
- Whether surviving material is complete, damaged, or split among different archives.
- Whether the reported recovered portions represent the feature itself, trailers, or other production assets.
It would be inaccurate to turn this unresolved account into a definitive legal dispute or to state that one company certainly controls every surviving right. The practical conclusion is narrower: no publicly documented, official home release has emerged in the record described by the Archive.

How it compares with the manga and the 2012 television adaptation
The comparison that can be made responsibly is about scope and access, not a scene-by-scene ranking. The Archive supports the film’s five-volume compression. The official JoJo portal and David Production establish the story framework used by the franchise’s television adaptation, but the available material here does not document the 2007 film’s complete edit or every difference from either source.
| Version | What is established | What remains unestablished | Practical access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phantom Blood manga | The underlying story involving the Stone Mask, Jonathan, and Dio; the film is reported to condense five volumes. | A full adaptation audit of the film’s omissions and rearrangements. | The official portal points readers to the comics section; check regional editions separately. |
| 2007 theatrical film | Japanese theatrical screenings began February 17, 2007; approximate runtime is about 90 minutes; Hayama directed. | Complete footage, final runtime, exact cut, present rights, and verified reception data. | The Archive reports no later release beyond the theatrical screenings. |
| 2012 television adaptation | David Production’s official page summarizes the same core Phantom Blood premise. | This material does not establish a shot-by-shot comparison, the film’s alterations, or an artistic winner. | Availability depends on the current regional distributor and is not established by the cited film record. |
For a reader who wants the story now, the manga is the defensible companion because it supplies the source narrative rather than pretending to provide access to the unavailable movie. The television adaptation is a separate screen version, not evidence that the 2007 feature can be reconstructed from it.
What “another shot” should mean
A second chance does not have to mean remaking the movie. The most valuable first step would be a documented archival release of the existing work. That could take several forms, depending on what materials survive.

2. Explain the chain of custody
The public needs a clear account of who authorized the release and which elements were supplied by which archive or company. This is especially important because the reported DVD effort and later silence do not establish the current legal position.
3. Preserve the historical version
Any cleanup should retain a faithful presentation of the theatrical edit when that edit can be established. New subtitles, corrected credits, or restoration notes can be added as supplements, but they should not silently replace the historical work.
4. Add context rather than invented certainty
Production interviews, concept art, the surviving promotional material, and a timeline of the theatrical and DVD efforts would help viewers understand what they are seeing. Missing information should be labeled as missing; no box-office figure, quotation, or scene description should be filled in from fan memory.

5. Make the release usable
Japanese audio, accurate subtitles, chapter information, and a preservation-quality master would turn an archival curiosity into a film that can actually be studied. A limited theatrical screening could follow, but only after the rights and completeness questions are addressed.

Why renewed attention would matter
The film occupies an unusual place in the franchise: it is a major adaptation of the opening story, credited to recognizable performers and creators, yet it is largely absent from normal fan circulation. That makes it easy for later versions to define public memory of Phantom Blood without the 2007 feature being available for comparison.
Renewed attention would also clarify the limits of adaptation under pressure. A roughly 90-minute feature attempting five volumes offers a concrete case study in what theatrical compression can preserve, what it must sacrifice, and how much context a viewer needs before a story’s emotional stakes become clear. Those questions are more useful than declaring the movie good or bad on the basis of reputation alone.
There is a cultural-preservation argument as well. The Archive’s account of recovered portions, the former website, the blog, and the promotional material suggests that the film’s history is distributed across artifacts rather than preserved in one easily accessible package. Cataloging those artifacts would protect information even if a complete feature cannot be located.

On the evidence available, the strongest case is not that the 2007 film has been proven to deserve universal acclaim. It is that the film has never received the normal opportunity to be evaluated by a broad audience. The Archive reports a Japanese theatrical run beginning in 2007 and no later release; it also describes a production built around an ambitious, highly compressed adaptation. Until a complete and authorized version is available, certainty about its artistic success is impossible.
If the headline’s intended subject is indeed Phantom Blood, another shot should mean preservation first: verify the identity, locate and document the surviving materials, resolve the release authority, and let viewers judge the finished film. That would replace an inaccessible reputation with evidence.
