Usually, yes: when a JRPG advertises save transfer, your demo save can move to the full game if it remains on the same device and you use the same platform account. The full release may transfer it automatically, show a first-launch confirmation, or require a Load or Transfer command.
That promise is title-specific. A transfer normally covers the save itself, not automatic trophy or achievement credit, and a purchase on another console or storefront often cannot read the original data. Keep the demo save until the full game has detected it, update the full release first, and follow its exact on-screen instructions.

What “save transfer” means in a JRPG demo
A demo save is ordinary local save data stored by the game on your console or PC. A compatible full release looks for that data and either imports it into its own save system or unlocks an item for having demo data present. The transferable content can be a single story file, several manual saves, or every slot created in the demo.

A digital purchase made on a different platform may be unable to see the file even when you use the same publisher account.

Do these checks before starting the full game
- Keep the demo save. Do not delete its save slots while installing or launching the full game. Bandai Namco’s Echoes of Aincrad guide specifically warns players not to delete DEMO Version save data from the console or PC.
- Use the same platform account. Sign in with the same PlayStation Network, Nintendo, Steam, Microsoft, or equivalent first-party account used for the demo.
- Stay on a supported platform. Treat same-platform transfer as the safe assumption. A title may support a particular generation upgrade, but that does not create general cross-platform compatibility.
- Update the full game. Transfer logic can be added or corrected in patches. The Echoes of Aincrad instructions require the main game to be updated to its latest version before importing.
- Check for an existing full-game save. Some Square Enix support instructions say the transfer message will not appear when a full-game save already exists. In that case, deleting the full-game save is required for the prompt to return, so back up or export anything you intend to keep first.
How the transfer is triggered
There is no universal JRPG menu. Look for one of these behaviors on the first launch or at the title screen.

Read every prompt before choosing “new game.” In Echoes of Aincrad, selecting “Do not carry over” prevents the prompt from returning on later launches. The documented recovery is to delete all full-game save slots, create a new save file, and retry the transfer.
What actually carries over?
Story progress
When a game promises save transfer, the usual benefit is continuation from the demo’s last saved story point. Your characters, inventory, flags, and other progress are governed by that title’s save format; the promise does not mean every setting or system-level option will be copied.

Some games import more than the currently loaded file. Bandai Namco states that Echoes of Aincrad transfers all save data slots. Other titles may import only a selected slot, and the supplied platform descriptions do not establish a universal rule. Check the game’s own transfer screen before confirming if you have several demo saves.
Demo completion versus demo ownership
A title can use the presence of demo data as an eligibility flag even when it cannot reproduce the complete story state. It may also grant a reward for finishing a particular section. Those are separate systems: a bonus item can be awarded without importing your exact position, and an imported save does not guarantee every demo reward.

Will a demo save work on another console or storefront?
Usually not unless the publisher explicitly lists that path. Same-platform transfer is the reliable baseline, while cross-platform transfer is an exception that must be named for the specific game.

A storefront change on the same type of device can still matter. For example, a console version and a PC version may use different save locations or formats even when both are purchased digitally. Do not assume that a publisher account, cloud drive, or disc upgrade will bridge them.

Do trophies and achievements carry over?
Save transfer and platform achievement tracking are separate. A full game can accept your demo file while suppressing trophies or achievements that would normally be earned by replaying the relevant section.
The official Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter trial page states that on PlayStation 5, trophies cannot be earned upon transferring save data. Square Enix also notes that trophies and achievements are not present in one of its demos, so demo progress should not be treated as guaranteed achievement credit.
There are title-specific exceptions. In Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the Xbox achievement “Onetime Gig” unlocks in the main game when the transferred demo save completed the entire demo, even though achievements cannot be unlocked in the demo itself. That exception cannot be generalized to other platforms or JRPGs.

What happens if you uninstall the demo?
Uninstalling an application and deleting its save data are different operations, but their behavior varies by platform and game. Because the full release needs the demo data to detect eligibility, the safest practice is to leave both the demo and its saves installed until the transfer succeeds. If you have already removed the demo, check the console’s saved-data management or cloud-backup area before launching the full game; restoring the correct local save may be necessary.
Never delete the demo save to make room before confirming the full game has imported it. In Echoes of Aincrad, the publisher’s warning refers specifically to preserving the DEMO Version save data, not merely retaining the application.
Which bonuses can come from demo data?
Bonuses differ from transferred story progress and can have their own claim method. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade uses a complete first-chapter demo. Its demo data can transfer to the main game and unlock the Revival Earrings and Survival Set. If an existing full-game save blocks the normal transfer, Square Enix says those items can still be obtained through the full game’s Gift Box or another documented method.
Do not infer a reward from the mere existence of a demo. The publisher must specify whether the condition is owning the demo, saving any data, completing a chapter, or importing a file. A title may provide cosmetics or equipment while leaving the narrative start unchanged.

Echoes of Aincrad
- Update the main game to the latest version.
- Keep every DEMO Version save file on the same console or PC.
- Launch the full game and select Carry over when demo data is detected.
- Hold Confirm as instructed.
- Open save-data selection and load the transferred entry. The guide says all save-data slots are transferred.
The transfer is restricted to the same platform. It cannot be switched to Death Game mode. Choosing “Do not carry over” makes the prompt disappear; recovery requires deleting all full-game save slots, creating a new save, and attempting the process again.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter
Use Load Game on PS5 or Steam and Transfer on Nintendo Switch. The demo and full game must use the same PlayStation Network or Nintendo account. The publisher confirms that demo saves can move to the full version, but PS5 trophies cannot be earned when the save is transferred.
Square Enix platform examples
Square Enix support describes a workflow in which the demo save remains on the device and the player is signed in to the corresponding first-party account. PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Store editions show a confirmation screen, while Steam transfers automatically for the referenced title. The same support material warns that an existing full-game save can hide the transfer message.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
The demo covers the entire first chapter. Importing its data can grant the Revival Earrings and Survival Set. On Xbox, completing the entire demo can also trigger “Onetime Gig” in the main game after transfer. If your existing full-game save prevents the import, use the publisher’s stated Gift Box or alternate-reward route for the items rather than assuming the story file can be merged.
When the transfer prompt is missing
- Confirm the save location: verify that the demo save still exists on the original console or PC, rather than only the demo application.
- Check the account: sign out and back in to the first-party account used for the demo.
- Install updates: bring the full release to its current version before trying again.
- Look for an existing full save: some games require all full-game save slots to be removed before the prompt can reappear. Preserve backups before deleting anything.
- Use the correct menu: try Load Game or Transfer from the title screen when the game does not offer an automatic prompt.
- Recheck platform support: a different console generation or storefront may be outside the title’s transfer path.
- Do not select a destructive option casually: in Echoes of Aincrad, “Do not carry over” suppresses future prompts until the documented recovery procedure is followed.
A practical decision checklist
Before buying or reinstalling a full JRPG, write down four details: the demo platform, the planned full-game platform, the account used for the demo, and whether a full-game save already exists. Then find the title’s current support instructions and look for the exact trigger word—automatic, Load Game, Transfer, or Carry over.

If the instructions do not explicitly mention your platform pair, plan as though the save will not cross over. Keep the demo save untouched, update the full game, launch it once to test detection, and only then clean up the demo or old saves. Expect achievement behavior to be listed separately from save behavior.
The Bottom Line
Keep the demo save on the original device, use the same platform account, update the full game, and follow its exact import command. Same-platform transfer is the norm; cross-platform support, trophy credit, and bonus rewards are title-specific and must be confirmed in the game’s current official instructions.
