Chapter 259 reveals Sukuna’s devastating Divine Flame, amplified by Malevolent Shrine and a binding vow, and shows Choso sacrificing himself to protect Yuji. After Yuji’s farewell with Choso, Aoi Todo returns with a plan that gives Yuji a new opening against Sukuna—but no guarantee of victory.
Chapter 259 release and official reading
Chapter 259, titled “Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, Part 31,” was released in English by VIZ on May 19, 2024. The official VIZ chapter page is the place to read the English edition. The chapter’s events are also part of Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 29, whose Shueisha synopsis describes the sorcerers closing in as Sukuna recovers power through Black Flash.
Yuji continues learning Blood Manipulation
The chapter opens with training involving Yuji, Choso, and Noritoshi Kamo. Yuji is trying to understand Convergence, a Blood Manipulation technique that compresses blood for use as a projectile or in other controlled forms. Choso has trouble explaining the fundamentals, so Kamo offers Yuji a clearer explanation. The scene brings the brothers’ teacher-student relationship into focus as the battle approaches its decisive stages.
Sukuna turns Malevolent Shrine into a weapon
Sukuna uses Divine Flame—also referred to in other translations or discussion as Furnace or Kamino—within Malevolent Shrine. The chapter explains that this is not simply a powerful fire projectile: the domain’s conditions let Sukuna distribute combustible material and ignite it, while a binding vow and altered barrier conditions intensify the resulting blast.
#1 Best Overall
The result is a devastating, domain-wide explosion. The technique’s heat, decompression, and overpressure make the attack lethal to those caught inside its effective area. Uraume reads the blast as decisive, while Kinji Hakari remains separated from the main confrontation.
“Full power” works as dramatic headline language, but Chapter 259 does not establish that Sukuna has revealed or exhausted every part of his arsenal. More precisely, the chapter unveils the domain-enhanced form of his devastating fire technique.
Choso sacrifices himself to save Yuji
Yuji is caught in the blast’s effective area. Choso shields him with a blood barrier and takes the lethal consequences himself. After the explosion, Yuji finds Choso badly burned and dying.
In their farewell, Choso apologizes for not being a perfect teacher. Yuji tells him that staying by his side has already been more than enough, and accepts Choso as his older brother. Choso’s death gives their relationship an emotional resolution: he makes his claim of brotherhood real by protecting Yuji, and his sacrifice gives Yuji a personal reason to keep fighting.

Todo returns with a rescue plan
As Sukuna emerges from the smoke and Yuji’s resolve falters, Aoi Todo appears with his left hand bandaged. A flashback reveals that Todo and Mei Mei devised a plan using Boogie Woogie to move allies out of danger, including swaps involving Mei Mei’s crows. Todo kept the plan from Yuji because Sukuna could exploit information transmitted through Yuji’s connection to him.
Todo’s return confirms that he can still use Boogie Woogie despite his injury. Sukuna’s domain has collapsed, and his cursed technique is temporarily unavailable or impaired, giving Yuji and Todo a narrow opportunity to attack. The chapter ends with them facing Sukuna together, setting up their fight in Chapter 260—not confirming that they have won.
What Chapter 259 means for the fight
Divine Flame is the chapter’s major escalation, but Choso’s sacrifice is its emotional center. Sukuna’s attack changes the battlefield; Choso’s decision changes Yuji. Todo’s arrival then shifts the closing beat from grief to a tactical opening, restoring the Yuji–Todo partnership at a critical moment.
The chapter’s “full power” framing should be understood with care. Sukuna reveals an especially destructive application of his technique, made possible by Malevolent Shrine’s conditions and a binding vow. That is not the same as proving he has no other techniques or options. Likewise, Todo’s return creates a chance to fight back, not a guaranteed escape from Sukuna.
