Just Shapes & Beats is a strong fit if you enjoy electronic music, precise dodging, and chaotic cooperative play. Its central hook is simple: steer a shape through hazards timed to the soundtrack. It does not suit everyone, though—the music is fundamental to the experience, and the action can make your character difficult to track on a small display.

What kind of game is Just Shapes & Beats?

Berzerk Studio describes Just Shapes & Beats as a chaotic co-op musical bullet hell: you avoid incoming shapes and move to the beat. Rather than shooting enemies, you focus on surviving patterns of hazards choreographed to the music. The result blends the visual pressure of a bullet-hell game with a soundtrack that drives the action. Steam’s game listing identifies the developer and describes the core premise.

Nintendo Life’s 2018 review of the European Nintendo Switch version describes steering a shape around hazards and using a dash that briefly grants invulnerability. That brief escape option adds a timing decision to the basic task of finding a safe path. These are features described in that review, not claims about hands-on testing for this article. Read Nintendo Life’s review.

Is the music a big part of the appeal?

Yes. The electronic soundtrack is not incidental background: hazards are synchronized with the music, so the tracks help define both the rhythm and character of play. If you enjoy electronic music, that integration is a central attraction. If you do not, it may be a persistent mismatch rather than a minor drawback. Nintendo Life reviewer Gavin Lane specifically noted that players who dislike electronic music may not be won over.

Can you play alone or with friends?

Steam lists single-player, online co-op, and shared/split-screen co-op. That makes the game relevant both to solo players and to groups who want to dodge together. Steam’s listing establishes those features for that platform; it does not establish that every mode is available or works identically on every platform or under all network conditions. Check the listing for the version you plan to play. Steam features and listing.

Nintendo Life also says challenge mode and multiplayer extend play beyond the story. Its review does not establish current feature parity across platforms, so treat mode availability as version-specific rather than assuming every edition matches.

How difficult is Just Shapes & Beats?

The core challenge is reading hazard patterns and moving at the right moment. Nintendo Life’s review characterizes some sections as challenging and points to the dash’s temporary invulnerability as a way to get through danger. The game’s premise therefore favors players who enjoy reactive dodging; the available sources do not provide a reliable, platform-by-platform difficulty rating or a complete account of accessibility options.

Small-screen visibility can matter

Lane also found it challenging to keep track of the player shape in tabletop mode on Switch. That is a specific review-era observation about visibility in that setup, not evidence of current performance or a universal problem across displays. If you tend to lose track of a small on-screen character amid busy effects, screen size and viewing distance are worth considering.

What do reviews say about the game?

Reception is favorable in the platform-specific snapshots available, but the two figures below measure different groups and should not be combined.

Steam, English-language user reviews 97% positive from 13,452 reviews; Steam snapshot accessed October 8, 2026 Strongly positive user reception on Steam at that time. The rating and review count can change. Steam listing

The Steam figure is a user-review percentage, while the Metacritic figure summarizes critic reviews for a specific platform. Neither establishes how well the game will match an individual player’s tastes.

  • A good fit: players who like electronic music, music-synchronized action, evasive bullet-hell gameplay, or cooperative chaos.
