Kayak VR: Mirage Reviews: Is It Worth Playing?

Reviews find Kayak VR: Mirage most rewarding as a relaxing scenic VR paddle, with optional racing but limited overall content.

Kayak VR: Mirage is best understood as a scenic VR excursion with optional racing, not a long campaign or a deep progression game. Reviews praise its water, scenery and relaxed free-roam mode, while warning that its activities and overall content are limited. It is a strong fit if you want an immersive virtual paddle; less so if you need a large game with a steady stream of new objectives.

What do reviews say about Kayak VR: Mirage?

Reviewers agree most on the game’s presentation and its narrow scope. Its convincing water and scenic environments create a compelling sense of being on the water, and free roam is the mode critics most often single out as the main attraction. UploadVR reviewer Henry Stockdale called it “a quiet highlight of the PS VR2 launch window” and said it “thrives in its free roam mode.”

That praise comes with a clear qualification: paddling, exploring and racing are the core activities, and reviewers describe the available content as basic or limited. This is an atmospheric experience rather than a game built around a substantial campaign or broad variety of activities.

Ratings are snapshots, not a single verdict

Store and aggregator scores reflect different groups of players and critics. Steam’s page showed 82% positive from 1,006 all-time user reviews when accessed in 2026 and labeled the rating “Very Positive.” Metacritic showed a 73 Metascore from 10 critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average,” and a separate user score of 7.5 from 27 ratings. These figures are platform snapshots, not timeless scores, and the two platforms’ results should not be averaged together.

Is Kayak VR: Mirage worth it?

It is worth considering if you want to relax in VR, take in varied environments and paddle at your own pace. UploadVR’s Stockdale described free roam as a particularly relaxing experience, writing, “I’ve rarely felt this relaxed in VR and free roam is where I spent most of my time, exploring at a comfortable pace to see what each location has to offer.”

If you want more structure, checkpoint time attacks and leaderboard competition add a reason to improve your runs. Steam also lists real-time multiplayer for two players. The competition is optional, though: launch-period reviews predate that multiplayer listing, and UploadVR’s reviewer preferred free roam to racing. Don’t buy it expecting multiplayer or time trials to turn the experience into a large competitive game.

What can you do in the game?

The available modes let you choose between quiet exploration and a more goal-driven paddle:

  • Free roam: Explore a location at your own pace and focus on the scenery.
  • Tour Mode: Move through an environment passively, without paddling; Steam lists it as controller-free.
  • Checkpoint time attacks: Paddle through a course and compete for faster times.
  • Competition: Steam lists asynchronous leaderboard play and real-time play for two people.

The developer describes its physically based paddling and free-roam option this way: “Maneuver our fully physically accurate kayak around checkpoints and crown yourself the fastest, or take it easy and use the free roam mode for a leisurely trip and enjoy the scenery.” That is the developer’s description, not an independent assessment of how realistic the paddling feels.

Locations and paid add-ons

Steam and PlayStation list Soča Valley, including whitewater, and Yucatán, including whitewater, as paid location add-ons. The US PlayStation listing showed each add-on at $7.99 and the Complete Edition at $32.99 when accessed; those are storefront snapshots, not guaranteed current prices. Steam displayed regional euro prices and bundles. Check the live storefront for your region and confirm which locations an edition includes before buying.

How much content does Kayak VR: Mirage have?

There is enough variety for different kinds of short sessions—scenic exploration, passive touring and time-based challenges—but the overall activity loop is deliberately small. Reviewers say it does not take long to see what the available content offers and wish for more locations or broader activities. The listed Soča Valley and Yucatán add-ons add destinations, but they do not change the basic focus on paddling, exploring and racing.

Choose it for the quality of the virtual outing, not for a lengthy sequence of missions, a deep unlock system or extensive activity variety. The available reviews do not establish a precise completion time, so there is no sound basis for promising a particular number of hours.

Does Kayak VR: Mirage make you motion sick?

Comfort varies from person to person, and Sony warns that VR games may cause motion sickness. UploadVR reports that the game offers turning and collision vignettes, an option for a permanent vignette, stability settings and adjustable haptic intensity. These controls may help some players manage discomfort, but they cannot guarantee that a particular person will avoid nausea.

What do you need to play?

Kayak VR: Mirage is a VR-only game. Steam lists its PC release as 12 July 2022. The PlayStation Store lists a PS5 release on 22 February 2023 and states that PlayStation VR2 is required for that version. A PS5 copy is therefore not a television-only way to play; the headset is a separate hardware requirement.

Choose based on the VR hardware you already own, your relevant storefront and region, and whether the edition includes the paid locations you want. The available listings do not establish a current standalone Quest edition, nor do they provide a tested PC-headset compatibility comparison.
