“The code execution cannot proceed because kbd101b.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”

You may also see:

“kbd101b.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

kbd101b.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component. It is named KO Hangeul Keyboard Layout for 101(Type B) and supports Korean input, so the safest fix is to repair Windows or reinstall the Korean keyboard layout rather than downloading a loose DLL.

The 60-second answer

kbd101b.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, application plug-in, or ordinary hardware driver. Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs when the corresponding input method is selected.

Try these repairs in order:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run System File Checker.
  4. Remove and re-add the Korean language or keyboard layout.
  5. Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
  6. Use System Restore if the problem began after a recent system change.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test the application or Korean keyboard again. Microsoft recommends using DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to restore protected files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the official procedure.

What is kbd101b.dll?

The file’s description is KO Hangeul Keyboard Layout for 101(Type B). Its internal name is kbd101b, and it is published by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

A keyboard-layout DLL contains tables and entry points that Windows uses to translate keyboard scan codes, modifier states, and key presses into characters. Microsoft describes this architecture in its keyboard-layout samples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The “101(Type B)” wording identifies a Korean Hangeul keyboard layout variant. It does not mean that the file is a keyboard driver or that every Windows computer must use it.

Is it installed on every Windows computer?

No. The file is relevant to Korean language and input-layout configurations. A computer that never uses Korean input may not need the layout actively, although Windows system components and language features can vary by edition and installation history.

The normal Windows location is generally:

C:WindowsSystem32

The exact location can vary with Windows architecture and the installed language configuration. Do not assume that copying the file into both System32 and SysWOW64 is correct.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 usually contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system components. The directory names are confusing, so do not choose a replacement location based only on the filename or error message.

What causes the error?

A kbd101b.dll message usually indicates that Windows could not load the keyboard-layout component requested by the input subsystem or by an application. Common causes include:

  • A damaged or missing protected Windows file
  • Component-store corruption
  • An interrupted Windows update
  • An incomplete Korean language or keyboard installation
  • Antivirus quarantine or a false positive
  • Disk or filesystem damage
  • Malware or an unauthorized system modification
  • An old application incorrectly invoking a Windows keyboard-layout component
  • A mismatch between a program and the Windows architecture it expects

The generic “not found” and “not designed to run on Windows” messages are standard Windows loader wording. They do not prove that a particular game, installer, or application originally shipped with this DLL.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Windows servicing can restore missing system components and correct incomplete language-feature installations.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Open the affected application or select the Korean keyboard layout again.

If the error disappears, no manual DLL replacement is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Update fails, restart once more and check for updates again. Do not download kbd101b.dll from an unofficial DLL library to bypass a failed update. The file must match the Windows build, architecture, servicing state, permissions, and Microsoft signature.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the most important repair when the file is missing, corrupt, or rejected as incompatible.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.

DISM may pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.

A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows, then continue with SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, run Windows Update again. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must closely match the affected Windows edition and build. Do not use a random ISO or a DLL copied from another computer.

Run System File Checker

In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

The useful results are:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no remaining protected-file damage.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test kbd101b.dll again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use a matching repair source or move to System Restore and Windows repair options.

Do not interrupt SFC by closing the Command Prompt window.

Manually hunting for matching Windows builds and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair function is provided by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Microsoft repair.

Fix 3: Reinstall the Korean keyboard layout

If the error appears only when using Korean input, the language or keyboard installation may be incomplete.

Re-add Korean through Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Select Language & region.
  4. Look under Preferred languages.
  5. If Korean is not listed, select Add a language.
  6. Search for Korean.
  7. Select Korean, then select Next.
  8. Select Install.
  9. Restart Windows and test the keyboard.

If Korean is already installed:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Select Language & region.
  4. Find Korean under Preferred languages.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Select Language options.
  7. Review the installed keyboards.
  8. Select Add a keyboard and add the appropriate Korean layout if it is missing.
  9. If the existing keyboard entry appears damaged, remove it, restart, return to this page, and add it again.

A complete display-language pack is not always required just to use a keyboard layout, but Windows may need the Korean language entry installed before the layout becomes available.

Test the result by selecting the input indicator on the taskbar and choosing the Korean layout. If the layout now works and the error no longer appears, the language configuration was the likely cause.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine a system file after detecting suspicious activity or a false positive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections involving kbd101b.dll.
  7. Expand a detection to inspect its path, date, and action.

Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:

  • The original path is a normal Windows system directory.
  • The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component.
  • Its digital signature is valid.
  • You have no other indication of malware or unauthorized modification.

Do not restore an unknown copy merely because it has the right filename. If Windows Security continues removing the file, run a complete scan and investigate why it is being detected. Microsoft provides additional guidance for Protection History in Windows Security.

A Microsoft signature helps establish the file’s publisher and integrity, but it does not prove that the entire computer is free of malware.

Fix 5: Verify the file path and Microsoft signature

If a copy of kbd101b.dll exists, check it before attempting any repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the file’s location.
  3. Right-click kbd101b.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the Microsoft signature.
  7. Select Details.
  8. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

Also open the Details tab and check that the description refers to the Korean Hangeul keyboard layout.

A file in a temporary folder, a program’s download directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional investigation. Do not replace it manually with a file from another Windows computer.

Fix 6: Use System Restore

If the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, security-product action, or driver installation, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Check for disk damage or malware

If SFC restores kbd101b.dll and the file disappears again, something may be removing or damaging it.

First, back up important files. Then:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Run a Full scan.
  5. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

You can also check the filesystem from an elevated Command Prompt:

chkdsk /scan

This performs an online scan. If Windows reports disk errors, follow its recommended repair procedure and make sure important data is backed up first.

Persistent file loss can also result from failing storage hardware or third-party “cleanup” software. Disable or uninstall cleanup utilities that remove system files, then repeat the DISM and SFC sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Repair the application if only one program reports the error

If Windows input works normally and only one old application reports kbd101b.dll, the application may be invoking the system layout incorrectly.

Try this order:

  1. Repair the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the application’s three-dot menu.
  3. Select Advanced options if available.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall the application using its original installer or official distribution source.

Do not assume that reinstalling the application will replace a protected Windows keyboard-layout DLL. Repair Windows first when the file itself is missing or damaged.

No particular game, installer, or middleware package is established as a general cause of kbd101b.dll errors.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by the input subsystem; it is not normally registered as a COM server.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 kbd101b.dll

It may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, or it may fail because the DLL is not designed for self-registration. Microsoft documents the purpose and limitations of regsvr32.

Do not disable Windows File Protection, alter permissions on protected system folders, or force-register the file.

Do not download a replacement DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • Malware disguised as a system file
  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
  • A file with incorrect permissions or dependencies
  • A replacement that hides the underlying component corruption

A downloaded DLL can also make servicing more difficult because Windows expects protected files to come from its component store or official language and installation sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the Korean language installation, System Restore, or matching Windows installation media instead.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations

The filename alone does not identify the file’s architecture. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system directory, or a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory, based solely on the error text.

For a Windows system component, DISM and SFC are safer than manually choosing a directory because Windows can select the correct protected component for the installed system. If only one legacy application reports the problem, repair that application after Windows itself has been checked.

Avoid copying kbd101b.dll into an application folder unless the application’s official documentation specifically requires it. A system keyboard-layout DLL is not normally distributed with individual games or programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updating drivers is usually not the answer

kbd101b.dll is a keyboard-layout component, not a keyboard hardware driver. Updating a keyboard driver through Device Manager will not normally restore a missing Windows layout DLL.

If the physical keyboard also has problems:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Keyboards.
  4. Right-click the affected keyboard.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

Do not uninstall a working keyboard device merely because kbd101b.dll is missing. Driver repair is relevant only when Device Manager shows a separate hardware or driver problem.

Finding the correct driver versions across multiple devices can be tedious, especially on an older system. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; the driver installation feature is provided by the full version, and it is not required to repair kbd101b.dll.

When Windows Features help

Windows optional features are not the normal repair path for kbd101b.dll. You do not need to enable .NET Framework, Visual C++, DirectX, or another runtime to restore this keyboard-layout component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Language features are the relevant Windows feature area. Use:

Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Korean > Language options

If Korean is unavailable, use Add a language and install it there. Do not enable unrelated Windows Features in an attempt to satisfy a keyboard-layout DLL error.

What to collect if the error continues

If the repair sequence does not work, record:

  • The complete error text and status code
  • Whether the error appears during startup, application launch, or Korean input
  • The full path of any existing kbd101b.dll
  • Whether its Microsoft digital signature is valid
  • Your Windows edition and architecture
  • Whether Korean is installed under Language & region
  • The result of DISM
  • The result of SFC
  • Recent Windows Security Protection History entries
  • Whether another application shows the same error

You can inspect related events in Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Check Application and System around the time of the failure.
  5. Look for servicing, application error, disk, or security events.

Do not treat an event mentioning kbd101b.dll as proof that the file should be downloaded. Use it to determine whether Windows, an application, security software, or storage problems initiated the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQ

Is kbd101b.dll safe?

It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout DLL when it is in a normal Windows system location and carries a valid Microsoft signature. That does not make every file with this name safe, so verify the path and signature.

Do I need kbd101b.dll if I do not type Korean?

Not necessarily. It is associated with the Korean Hangeul 101(Type B) keyboard layout. If you do not use Korean input, repair Windows rather than trying to manually install or register the file.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

No. kbd101b.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime dependency. Use Windows servicing and Korean language-layout repair instead.

Should I register kbd101b.dll?

No. Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by the Windows input subsystem and are not normally registered with regsvr32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy it from another PC?

That is not a safe general fix. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language configuration, signature state, or servicing level.

Why does the message mention an application?

Windows may display the error while an application is starting even when the missing file belongs to Windows. The application may be requesting a keyboard layout, or it may be incorrectly handling a system dependency. Repair Windows first, then repair the application if only that program remains affected.

What is the best first step?

Install Windows updates, restart, and run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. If the error is tied to Korean input, re-add the Korean keyboard layout through Settings.
