kbdcher.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a game DLL or Visual C++ runtime. It implements the Cherokee Nation keyboard layout, so the safest repair is to restore Windows components or remove a broken Cherokee layout registration rather than downloading a replacement file.
What is kbdcher.dll?
kbdcher.dll is the Windows keyboard-layout DLL for Cherokee Nation. Windows loads it through the input subsystem when that layout is selected or registered.

The two folders do not contain interchangeable copies. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Exact file versions, sizes and architecture depend on your Windows release and servicing build.
Microsoft documents the Cherokee Nation keyboard, its Windows keyboard-layout identifiers, and the identifier 0000045C in its default input locale documentation.

Why Windows reports a kbdcher.dll error
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because kbdcher.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdcher.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting kbdcher.dll.”
- “Error loading kbdcher.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “kbdcher.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not prove that a particular game or application owns the file.
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that the DLL itself is absent, but it can also indicate a damaged Windows component, an invalid path, a dependency problem or stale keyboard-layout registration.
The most likely causes are:
- A protected Windows file was corrupted or deleted.
- The Cherokee keyboard layout registration is damaged.
- An interrupted update damaged the Windows component store.
- Security software quarantined a legitimate system file.
- The file is an impostor outside the Windows system directories.
First check: locate and verify the file
Before changing anything, check both normal locations.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
C:WindowsSystem32in the address bar. - Search for
kbdcher.dll. - Repeat in
C:WindowsSysWOW64if you use 64-bit Windows. - Right-click any copy found and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
A legitimate system copy should have a Microsoft Windows signature. The signature is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for system-integrity repair.

A missing copy is not automatically evidence of malware. Windows does not necessarily install every input layout in every configuration, and a computer that never uses Cherokee may not need that layout actively registered.
If you find kbdcher.dll in a game folder, Downloads, a temporary directory or another unexpected location, do not run or copy it. Treat it as suspicious and scan it with Windows Security.
Fix 1: repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when the error appears during sign-in, language switching, Windows settings or other system activity.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. That matters because SFC uses protected Windows files and their repair sources to replace damaged copies.

Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the file may be intact and the remaining problem may be a stale keyboard-layout registration, path issue or damaged user profile.
If SFC says it could not repair some files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart once more.
For a targeted check, use:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32kbdcher.dll
Use the affected path and architecture. Microsoft documents SFC repair and verification in its System File Checker guidance and support instructions.

A corrected or missing Windows component should come through Windows Update, not a random DLL archive.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also have a repair-reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files and settings. Back up important data before using any repair operation. Microsoft describes this process in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
Fix 3: remove and re-add the Cherokee keyboard layout
Use this fix when the error began after changing language packs or keyboard layouts, or when Windows tries to load Cherokee even though you do not use it.
Remove the layout
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Choose Language & region.
- Open Language options for the relevant language.
- Under Keyboards, select the Cherokee layout.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
The layout may appear under the current display language or under Cherokee. Installed keyboard layouts are not always grouped where you would expect.

If Remove is disabled, Windows considers it the only keyboard for that language. Add another keyboard layout first, then remove the Cherokee layout.
Add it again
If you need Cherokee:
- Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the relevant language’s Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose Cherokee Nation if it is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test it from the input-language selector on the taskbar.
If removing the layout stops the error, the system file was probably usable and the registration was stale or damaged. If adding it again brings the error back, run DISM and SFC, then install Windows updates.

Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate file, although a file downloaded from an untrusted DLL site should not be restored automatically.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any event referring to
kbdcher.dll. - Check its original path and publisher.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Only restore or allow the file if it is in the expected Windows directory, has a valid Microsoft signature and the detection is clearly a false positive. Otherwise, repair Windows with DISM, SFC or Windows Update.

Fix 5: investigate storage or filesystem corruption
If SFC repeatedly cannot repair files, the disk or filesystem may be involved.
- Save your work.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /f C:
- If Windows asks to schedule the check for the next restart, type
Y. - Restart the computer.
- After the check completes, run DISM and SFC again.
If errors continue, review drive health and back up important files before deeper repair work.

Fix 6: check for a broader update or driver problem
kbdcher.dll is not a conventional hardware driver and normally is not repaired through Device Manager. Still, if the error started immediately after a Windows update, chipset change or input-device update, check for pending driver updates.
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not replace kbdcher.dll from Device Manager. If the driver change caused the broader failure, use the device manufacturer’s official support channel or roll back the specific device driver from Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that button is available.

Fix 7: use System Restore
If the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation or system change, System Restore may return the affected configuration to an earlier state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs without changing personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore documentation explains the process.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Third-party DLL download sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong Windows build or the wrong architecture. A filename match does not establish compatibility, and manually copying the file often leaves the damaged component store or layout registration untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC or Windows installation media instead.

Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64
The directories serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Copying a 32-bit file into the native system directory, or copying a file from a different Windows build, can create a second problem.
Do not use regsvr32
kbdcher.dll is a keyboard-layout DLL, not an ordinary COM or ActiveX library. Windows loads keyboard layouts through the input system and layout-specific entry points such as KbdLayerDescriptor; it is not normally repaired by self-registration.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a meaningful fix:
regsvr32 kbdcher.dll
Microsoft’s regsvr32 guidance applies to DLLs designed for registration, not normal keyboard-layout components.

Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX and .NET are not the normal source of kbdcher.dll. Installing them will not restore a Windows keyboard-layout component.
Advanced recovery
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update and layout removal do not resolve the problem:
- Test a new Windows user profile. If the error disappears, the original profile’s input-language configuration may be damaged.
- Use Windows installation media for an advanced offline repair with a known-good file from the same Windows build and architecture.
- Back up important data and perform a Windows repair reinstall if the component store remains damaged.
Manual replacement should be treated as administrator-level recovery, followed by SFC and signature checks. It is not the normal consumer fix.
FAQ
Is kbdcher.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy outside the Windows system directories, an unsigned copy or a file with an implausible publisher should be treated as suspicious and scanned.
Is kbdcher.dll part of a game?
No verified evidence makes it a game-specific dependency. Windows may display the error while another application is starting because that application triggers input initialization, but the DLL belongs to the Windows keyboard-layout system.
Do I need the file if I never use Cherokee?
Not necessarily. Removing the unused Cherokee keyboard layout can eliminate a stale registration. Do not delete a protected system file manually.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found?
The message can mean the DLL is missing, but it can also indicate a damaged dependency, invalid path, component-store problem or broken layout registration.
Should I register kbdcher.dll?
No. Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by Windows’ input subsystem and are not normally registered with regsvr32.
