cygintl-8.dll is a Cygwin version of GNU libintl, a runtime library used by Cygwin tools and some Windows programs that bundle Cygwin components. It is not a Windows system DLL, and the safest fix is to repair the Cygwin package or the application that installed it rather than copying the file into System32.
The official Cygwin package that supplies this file is libintl8. In a normal Cygwin installation, the file is under the Cygwin root, commonly:
C:cygwin64bincygintl-8.dll
The exact error may say that cygintl-8.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows. The message can also appear when a dependency required by the DLL or the launching program is missing.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Cygwin package
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely repair if the error appears when launching Cygwin, Bash, SSH, a compiler, Git-related tools, or another program installed as part of a Cygwin environment.

Cygwin Setup is also the supported way to update and repair an existing installation.
- Close the affected program and any open Cygwin terminals.
- Download the current Cygwin installer from the official Cygwin website. Use
setup-x86_64.exefor a normal 64-bit installation. - Run the installer.
- Choose the same installation root used by the broken installation, such as:
text
C:cygwin64 - Continue through the mirror and local-package screens.
- At the package-selection screen, search for:
text
libintl8 - Click the word
Skipbesidelibintl8until an available package version is selected. - Finish Setup and allow it to replace missing or damaged files.
Do not select a random similarly named package. The package that supplies cygintl-8.dll is libintl8.
After installation, open a new Cygwin terminal and test the program again. If it starts normally, the package repair worked.

setup-x86_64.exe -q -P libintl8
That command still requires the appropriate installation root, mirror, and local-package settings for the particular Cygwin installation.
If Setup reports that the root directory does not match the existing installation, stop and verify whether the computer has both C:cygwin and C:cygwin64. Installing the package into the wrong root will not repair the program that is actually failing.
Fix 2: Check the package and its dependencies
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Use this fix when reinstalling libintl8 did not solve the error, or when the message says “the specified module could not be found.” That wording does not always mean that cygintl-8.dll itself is absent. A dependent DLL may be the real missing module.
Open a Cygwin terminal and run:
cygcheck -c libintl8
This checks the package status. If the package is incomplete or files are missing, run:

Then reinstall libintl8 through Cygwin Setup as described above.

To inspect the dependencies of the program that fails, run:
cygcheck /path/to/program.exe
Replace the path with the actual executable. For example:
cygcheck /usr/bin/ssh.exe
To search the Cygwin package repository for the file, use:
cygcheck -p 'cygintl-8.dll'
If the dependency report identifies cygwin1.dll, cygiconv-2.dll, or another Cygwin runtime as missing, repair the relevant packages through Setup instead of downloading individual files.
A successful repair produces a complete dependency report and allows the program to launch. If cygcheck still reports missing files after Setup finishes, check whether the executable belongs to a different Cygwin installation or to a separate third-party application.
Fix 3: Repair the application that bundled Cygwin
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Some Windows applications ship their own Cygwin DLLs. In that situation, repairing your main Cygwin installation may have no effect because the failing program is loading a private copy from its own installation folder.
Use this path when the error appears while starting a standalone installer, utility, development tool, game-related program, or other application that is not launched from a Cygwin terminal.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Look in the application folder for the executable and nearby Cygwin files.
- Note whether the program has its own
bindirectory or runtime folder. - Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then test the application.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from its developer or vendor and reinstall it.
Some applications provide a launcher with Verify files, Repair installation, or a similar command. Use that facility before copying any DLL manually.
If the application’s installer placed cygintl-8.dll beside its executable, let that installer restore it. Do not replace the application’s copy with a file taken from C:cygwin64bin; the two programs may require different runtime sets.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a Cygwin DLL after an update or after the application changes its files.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cygintl-8.dll, the application, or its installation folder. - Confirm that the file came from the official Cygwin installation or the trusted application installer.
- If the source is legitimate, follow the security product’s restore or allow instructions.
- Run Cygwin Setup again and reinstall
libintl8, or reinstall the affected application. - Start a new scan and test the program.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain a DLL. If the file was downloaded from an unknown source, do not restore it. Remove that copy and reinstall the package from the official source.

Fix 5: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
A 32-bit executable cannot generally use a 64-bit Cygwin DLL, and a 64-bit executable cannot use a 32-bit one. Renaming a DLL does not change its architecture.
For current Cygwin installations, use the 64-bit Setup program and keep all Cygwin packages from the same installation. Cygwin’s old 32-bit x86 distribution is no longer a current, regularly updated platform.
If a third-party application is 32-bit:
- Open the application’s official installer or support page.
- Download the build intended for that application’s architecture.
- Uninstall the broken build if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Install the matching build.
- Do not copy 64-bit Cygwin files into its directory.
If you have both C:cygwin and C:cygwin64, determine which one owns the failing executable. A package installed into C:cygwin64 cannot repair a program that is loading libraries from C:cygwin.

Fix 6: Update the affected program and its drivers
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics or hardware driver normally does not supply cygintl-8.dll, but an outdated driver can cause a separate application startup failure or prevent a repaired program from working correctly.
First update the application itself through its official installer or built-in updater. Then check drivers:
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing program, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Start the affected program again.
Do not use a driver update as a substitute for reinstalling libintl8 or the owning application. It is a secondary step when the program has additional hardware-related startup problems.

Manually checking every device and matching driver versions can be tedious when several components are outdated. Reinstalling the affected Cygwin-based program remains the definitive fix when its bundled runtime is incomplete.
Fix 7: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally install the Cygwin libintl8 package, so they should not be your first response to this error.
Use them when other Windows programs are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or you have evidence of general system corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart and test the program.
If both commands complete successfully but cygintl-8.dll is still missing, return to Cygwin Setup or the application’s installer. Windows repair commands are not a replacement for reinstalling libintl8.

Do not run:
regsvr32 cygintl-8.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. cygintl-8.dll is an ordinary runtime library, not a COM component that should be registered.
Also avoid:
- Downloading the DLL from a random DLL repository
- Copying it into
C:WindowsSystem32 - Copying it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64 - Renaming a 32-bit DLL to use it with a 64-bit program
- Mixing files from different Cygwin installations
- Using registry cleaners to repair the error
- Adding every Cygwin
bindirectory to the global WindowsPATH
Those actions can introduce malware, load the wrong architecture, hide the real package problem, or create conflicts between multiple Cygwin installations. Use the official Cygwin installer for Cygwin files and the application vendor’s official installer for bundled files.
There is normally no Windows Feature to enable for cygintl-8.dll. Installing DirectX, Visual C++ Redistributables, .NET, or a graphics driver will not normally restore this Cygwin library.
What usually caused the error
The common causes are:
libintl8was omitted during a minimal Cygwin installation.- The DLL was deleted, damaged, or lost during a partial upgrade.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- A third-party application bundled an incomplete Cygwin runtime.
- The program and DLL have different architectures.
- Another dependency is missing.
- The computer has multiple Cygwin roots and the package was repaired in the wrong one.
A message naming cygintl-8.dll does not prove that the file itself is the damaged component. Dependency checking is important when reinstalling the named package does not solve the problem.

Which package installs it?
The official Cygwin package is libintl8, described as the GNU internationalization runtime library.
Is it related to cygwin1.dll?
Yes. Both are Cygwin runtime components, but they are separate files supplied for different purposes. Repairing one does not automatically restore the other.

No. It normally belongs inside the Cygwin installation, commonly under C:cygwin64bin, or beside an executable when a third-party application carries its own runtime.
Why does the error say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by cygintl-8.dll or by the executable. Run cygcheck on the failing program and repair the missing package group.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. cygintl-8.dll is a Cygwin library, not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.
Can I use a DLL from another computer?
Do not do so. The copied file may have the wrong architecture, package build, dependency set, or source. Reinstall the matching package or application instead.
When should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them only when there are signs of broader Windows corruption. They do not install libintl8.
What if the program is not Cygwin?
Repair or reinstall the program that displays the error. It may have bundled its own Cygwin runtime, and that private copy must be restored by the vendor’s installer.
