kbdgrlnd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component: the Greenlandic keyboard layout DLL. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, game dependency, or ordinary application DLL.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- You recently removed or changed a language or keyboard: reinstall the Greenlandic layout in Windows Settings.
- The file is missing from Windows folders or several Windows input features are failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- The error appeared after an update: install pending updates, restart, then run DISM and SFC.
- Antivirus recently quarantined the file: inspect quarantine before restoring anything and run a full scan.
- The file exists but Windows says it is “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid replacement.
- The message appears only in one account: compare language and keyboard settings with another Windows profile.
- An unknown program repeatedly requests the file: investigate that process for malware rather than downloading a replacement.
- Nothing repairs the problem and it began after a recent system change: use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall.
Do not begin by copying kbdgrlnd.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded file can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build or architecture, and leave the underlying language or component-store problem unresolved.

What kbdgrlnd.dll does
Windows identifies the Greenlandic keyboard layout with keyboard-layout ID 0000046F. Windows loads the layout DLL through its input system when the Greenlandic layout is installed or selected.

This is different from a normal self-registering application library. Keyboard-layout DLLs provide layout-specific input information to Windows and are loaded by the window manager. That is why reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the appropriate first response.
The native copy is normally associated with:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system-file access can also involve:
%windir%SysWOW64
Do not treat those directories as interchangeable. A 32-bit DLL and a 64-bit DLL are not automatically suitable replacements for one another, and versions from different Windows builds may not be compatible.
Check the error before repairing Windows
First identify when the message appears:
- Note the complete error text.
- Record whether it appears at sign-in, while changing keyboard layouts, or when launching a particular program.
- Check whether you recently installed an update, removed a language, ran a cleanup utility, or saw an antivirus detection.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Review the installed languages and keyboard layouts.
You can locate existing copies from an elevated or regular Command Prompt with:
where /r "%windir%System32" kbdgrlnd.dll
where /r "%windir%SysWOW64" kbdgrlnd.dll
These commands only locate files. They do not prove that a file is genuine or usable.
To inspect a copy:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Open Details and check the product and file information.
- Do not trust a file merely because its name is correct.
If the file is absent, do not download it manually yet. Continue with the Windows and language repairs below.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Greenlandic keyboard layout
This is the most direct fix when the layout was removed, partially installed, or damaged.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Choose Add a language.
- Search for the relevant language and install it.
- Select the language’s More options button.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the Greenlandic keyboard layout if it is available.
- Restart Windows or sign out if Windows requests it.
After signing in, open the keyboard selector on the taskbar and check whether the layout appears. If the original error was caused by a removed language component, the message should stop.
If the language is already installed, remove the affected keyboard layout, restart, and add it again:
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Select the language.
- Open Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select the Greenlandic layout.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the same page and select Add a keyboard.
- Add the layout again.
If Settings refuses to install or remove the layout, repair Windows before repeating the language change.
Fix 2: Repair missing or corrupted Windows components
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. It may pause at a percentage while Windows services the component store. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the keyboard layout or affected program again.
Possible SFC results include:
- Did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not detected as damaged. Check the language installation and the process requesting the DLL.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, continue to the escalation steps.
Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Fix 3: Install Windows updates and use the repair reinstall
An interrupted or incomplete update can leave system components inconsistent.

- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also see a repair option:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt the process.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
If the error began immediately after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined. A legitimate system file can be flagged after corruption or tampering, but restoring it blindly is unsafe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
kbdgrlnd.dll. - Review the detection name, file path, and action taken.
- Restore the file only when the detection is demonstrably a false positive and the file’s Windows origin and signature are trustworthy.
- Otherwise, leave it quarantined.
- Select Scan options and run a Full scan.
After the scan, repair Windows with DISM and SFC. If malware is suspected or the detection returns, disconnect from untrusted networks where appropriate and use Windows recovery options or installation media rather than obtaining a replacement DLL from an unofficial source.
Fix 5: Update Windows input and device components
kbdgrlnd.dll is not an ordinary hardware driver, so reinstalling a keyboard driver is not normally the definitive fix. However, update-related input problems can justify checking Windows Update and Device Manager.
To check the keyboard device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the relevant keyboard device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not delete random devices or install a driver from an unverified download page. If Device Manager shows no warning symbol and the problem is specifically the Greenlandic layout, return to the language-layout and DISM/SFC fixes instead.
Comparing many hardware-driver versions can be tedious when an update has disturbed several devices. Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error started after an update, cleanup program, driver change, or language modification and the earlier repair steps did not help.

- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can change applications, drivers, and system settings. Review the affected-program list before confirming.
Fix 7: Repair Windows in place
If DISM cannot repair the component store, SFC repeatedly fails, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, use a supported Windows repair reinstall or Windows installation media.
Back up important files first. Use Microsoft’s Windows recovery or installation options, select the option that preserves personal files and applications when available, and follow the installer’s compatibility checks. Do not format the drive or choose a clean installation unless you have deliberately backed up your data and intend to remove the existing Windows installation.

Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdgrlnd.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by Windows’ input system and uses layout-specific entry points rather than ordinary COM registration.

If the file exists but still will not load
A present file does not guarantee a working file. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to the named DLL or to a dependency that Windows could not load.
Check these possibilities:
- The file was copied from another Windows build.
- The file has the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- The digital signature is missing or invalid.
- The file is corrupted.
- A language-layout installation is incomplete.
- Stale keyboard-layout configuration is requesting the file.
- Malware or an unknown startup process is requesting it.
If the message appears only in one profile, compare the language and keyboard configuration with another user account. If it appears only when an unknown executable starts, inspect that executable and run a security scan. Do not place the DLL in an application or game directory.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but the error continues, record the exact message and identify the requesting process. Event Viewer and the triggering application can help distinguish a stale input configuration from a broader Windows or security problem.

Is kbdgrlnd.dll safe?
