Where should kbdindev.dll be located?
On a normal Windows installation, the native copy belongs under:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes use Windows’ WOW64 redirection. This means a 32-bit process may see the corresponding system location through:
%windir%SysWOW64
Do not interpret the names as meaning that System32 is the 32-bit folder. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory and SysWOW64 supports redirected 32-bit access. Microsoft’s File System Redirector documentation describes this behavior.
Do not manually swap files between these directories. A 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch can produce loading errors even when a file with the correct name exists.
First identify which problem you have
Before repairing anything, determine whether this is a Windows input problem or an application-specific startup error.
If Hindi or Devanagari typing disappeared
You likely need to add the keyboard layout or its language feature again. Continue to the keyboard-layout fix below.
If one application reports the error when it starts
The application may be showing a misleading message, loading the wrong copy, or containing a damaged bundled component. A normal Windows application should not ordinarily need a private copy of a Windows keyboard-layout DLL in its own installation folder.

- Whether every program is affected
- The path of any copy found on the computer
- Whether the problem began after an update, crash, cleanup, or antivirus detection
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
Reported messages can include “kbdindev.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” or “The specified module could not be found.” The last message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. It can also indicate a failed dependency or loading context.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus a restart
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from its Windows location, several Windows features are malfunctioning, or the problem followed a failed update, disk issue, system crash, or cleanup utility.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run these commands separately, in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window merely because progress appears paused.

Then run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands complete.
What success looks like
Try the affected application again or select the Hindi/Devanagari keyboard. The repair worked if the error no longer appears and the layout loads normally.
SFC may report that it:
- Found no integrity violations
- Found corrupt files and repaired them
- Found corrupt files but could not repair some of them
If SFC repaired files, restart and test again. If it could not repair everything, continue with the recovery steps below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Windows may need a matching repair source. Use a Windows installation image or repair source that corresponds appropriately to the installed Windows version:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the trusted matching source. Do not use a folder copied from an unrelated Windows build.
Run SFC again afterward:
sfc /scannow
If the commands still cannot repair Windows, proceed to System Restore or an in-place repair reinstall.
Fix 2: Add the Hindi or Devanagari keyboard again
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes, plus any download time
Use this fix when Windows starts normally but Hindi, Sanskrit, Konkani, or Devanagari INSCRIPT is missing from the available keyboard layouts.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the language currently associated with the keyboard.
- Select the … menu beside it.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the required Devanagari or INSCRIPT layout.
If the layout is not listed, select Add a language first and install the language associated with the layout. A complete display-language change is not always required merely to obtain a keyboard layout. Windows may retrieve the required components through Windows Update. Microsoft’s keyboard and input-layout instructions provide the current settings path.
Microsoft states that Indic INSCRIPT keyboards are included with Windows. Indic phonetic keyboards are a separate option. Microsoft’s Indic keyboard guidance explains the distinction.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select the installed language associated with the keyboard.
- Select Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the Hindi or Devanagari INSCRIPT layout.
If the layout is already present but does not work, remove it, restart Windows, and add it again. Then test it from the language indicator on the taskbar.

What success looks like
Press Windows key + Space to cycle through installed keyboard layouts. Open a text editor and type a few characters using the selected layout. If the layout appears and accepts input, the missing-language problem is resolved.
If Windows cannot add the layout, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat the process. If the feature still will not install, return to Fix 1 and repair Windows components.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes, plus scan time
Windows Defender or another security product may quarantine a legitimate system file, although a file in an unexpected application folder may also be malicious or modified.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
kbdindev.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name matches.
Restore or allow the file only when its authenticity and expected Windows location are established. Microsoft documents the available Protection History actions, including Restore and Allow on device. Review Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
After a legitimate file is restored:
- Run a full malware scan.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Test the keyboard layout or affected application.
If the file was found in a game or application folder rather than a Windows system directory, do not restore it automatically. Scan the computer and repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher.
If malware remains suspected, disconnect the affected computer from sensitive networks and use Microsoft’s recovery guidance. A clean reinstall from trusted installation media may be appropriate when an infection cannot be removed reliably. Microsoft recovery options describe the available paths.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Use this fix when only one program reports kbdindev.dll and Windows’ own keyboard layouts work normally.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its available menu.
- Select Repair or Modify if provided.
- If repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application vendor’s official source.
- Install it again and test it.
If the program has a launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function before reinstalling it.

Do not copy kbdindev.dll into the application’s folder as a routine fix. If the application was incorrectly packaged with a private copy, replacing that copy may hide the real problem or introduce a mismatched or modified file. The vendor’s repaired installer is the correct source.
Fix 5: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering libraries that expose functions such as DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer, commonly used by some COM components. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax separately. Read Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation.
Keyboard-layout DLLs use layout exports such as KbdLayerDescriptor. They are loaded by Windows’ keyboard system, not normally registered with regsvr32.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a recommended repair:

regsvr32 kbdindev.dll
regsvr32 /u kbdindev.dll
An error from regsvr32 does not diagnose the underlying problem and will not restore a missing Windows component.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the input device itself is failing
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A keyboard-layout DLL is not normally a hardware driver. Device Manager is relevant only if the physical keyboard, USB connection, Bluetooth device, or keyboard driver is also malfunctioning.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a USB or Bluetooth keyboard, also check the relevant device category and reconnect the device. Do not remove an unknown device unless you know which hardware it represents.
If the problem is finding stale drivers across several devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can show the drivers its scan identifies; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it is not required to repair kbdindev.dll.
If the physical keyboard works but the Hindi layout is unavailable, return to Fix 2. Installing a keyboard driver will not normally add the Devanagari INSCRIPT layout.
Fix 7: Use System Restore when repair commands fail
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent system change and DISM and SFC could not correct it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs associated with the restore point. It does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what the process changes.
After Windows starts, test the keyboard layout and run SFC again if necessary.

Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
Use a repair reinstall when Windows remains damaged, SFC cannot repair protected files, or language features repeatedly fail to install.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where it is available. Its presence depends on the Windows version and device configuration. Microsoft’s repair-reinstall instructions contain the current requirements.
If that option is unavailable, use Microsoft installation media for an in-place repair and carefully choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Back up important data first. If malware is still suspected, do not use an in-place repair as a substitute for a clean recovery process.

Why Windows reports this error
The likely causes fall into four groups:

The message “The specified module could not be found” can also describe a failed dependency or incompatible loading context. It does not prove that manually copying the named DLL will solve the problem.

There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download for kbdindev.dll. A file from a third-party DLL repository may be:
- From a different Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or unsigned
- Incomplete or damaged
- A malicious replacement
- Unable to fix the underlying component-store problem
The safe sources are Windows component servicing, the installed language and keyboard features, System Restore, a matching Windows installation image, or Windows reinstallation. Manual copying is appropriate only as controlled administrator recovery using a trusted matching image or a known-good file from the same machine and build, followed by DISM and SFC.

No. It is not a general-purpose runtime component. Reinstalling those packages is not a normal fix.
Should I run regsvr32?
Normally, no. Keyboard-layout DLLs are not repaired by routine COM registration commands.
Should I copy the file from another PC?
Not as a normal consumer repair. Windows build, servicing state, architecture, and language configuration matter. Use DISM, SFC, Windows servicing, or a matching repair image instead.
Why does a game or program mention this Windows keyboard file?
The program may be displaying a generic loader error, loading an incorrect bundled copy, or failing in a context unrelated to the actual keyboard layout. Repair the application if only that program is affected, and do not assume the program owns the DLL.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, then run SFC again. If repair still fails, use a matching repair source, System Restore, or a Windows repair reinstall. Do not replace the file with an arbitrary download.
Does Windows 10 use the same steps as Windows 11?
The DISM and SFC commands apply to both, but Settings paths and available recovery options differ. The language-layout steps above show the separate paths. Windows 10 update behavior may also differ from Windows 11, so use the recovery options available on your installation.
How do I know the repair worked?
The affected program starts without the error, or the Hindi/Devanagari keyboard appears in the language switcher and accepts input. If only one application still fails while Windows typing works, repair or reinstall that application rather than replacing the Windows DLL manually.
