Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program reports the error: Windows sign-in, a single application, or every startup.
- When it appears: after an update, cleanup, antivirus alert, language change, crash, or software installation.
- The exact wording: “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” “corrupted,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Whether Marathi or an InScript keyboard is installed: press Windows key + Spacebar and inspect the available layouts.
kbdinmar.dll is the Microsoft Windows Marathi Keyboard Layout component. It supports Marathi keyboard input, including the Marathi InScript layout, and uses the Windows keyboard identifier 0000044E (mr). It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, game component, or ordinary device driver.
The safest repair is to restore Marathi through Windows settings, then repair Windows components with DISM and SFC. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL.

What causes a kbdinmar.dll error
The message can point to several different problems:
| Message | What it usually tells you |
|---|---|
| “kbdinmar.dll is missing from your computer” | Windows or an application cannot find the expected component |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdinmar.dll was not found” | A program requested the file but the loader could not locate it |
| “Error loading kbdinmar.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The file may be absent, or a dependency or loader path may be failing |
| “kbdinmar.dll could not be loaded” | Windows found a request for the component but could not load it |
| “kbdinmar.dll is corrupted” | The file or its Windows component store may be damaged |
| “kbdinmar.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | Windows detected an invalid image, corruption, or an architecture mismatch |
A missing file does not automatically mean malware. Damaged language features, an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, a broken application installation, and unauthorized replacement are all possible causes.

Fix 1: Add Marathi and the keyboard layout again
This is the best first repair when the error appears during login, while switching input languages, or after changing Windows language settings.
On Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select Add a language.
- Search for Marathi, select it, and choose Next.
- Install the required language features. You do not have to make Marathi the Windows display language.
- Select the … menu beside Marathi.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, choose Add a keyboard.
- Select the Marathi or Marathi InScript layout if it is not already present.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the layout with Windows key + Spacebar.
On Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Choose Add a preferred language.
- Search for and select Marathi, then select Next.
- Install the language features you need.
- Select Marathi and choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the Marathi or InScript layout.
- Restart Windows and test with Windows key + Spacebar.
Microsoft’s language and keyboard settings guidance explains the supported installation path. Microsoft also documents Marathi input in its Marathi IME documentation.
Marathi does not need to become the display language. Windows can keep its existing display language while installing Marathi as an additional keyboard layout.

Remove and add the keyboard again:
- Open the Marathi language’s Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select the Marathi layout.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the same screen and choose Add a keyboard.
- Add the layout again.
- Restart once more and test it.
If the keyboard returns but the error remains, continue with Windows component repair.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Windows protects keyboard-layout files as part of its operating-system components. Repairing the component store is safer than copying a DLL from another computer.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides source files for protected Windows components.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test Marathi input again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing missing or corrupted protected files. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again after installing pending updates, then run SFC once more. Repeatedly running SFC without addressing the component store or the underlying disk problem usually does not help.
Manually hunting through Windows folders and guessing which component is damaged is slow and unreliable. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; its repair actions are handled by the full version, while Windows DISM and SFC remain the official repair path.
Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave language components out of sync.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further restart is requested.
- Re-add Marathi if the layout is still missing.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Marathi keyboard and repeat the DISM/SFC repair if necessary.
For managed or offline computers, language packages and Language Features on Demand must match the installed Windows release and platform. Do not mix language packages from unrelated Windows builds. Microsoft documents this in its Features on Demand guidance.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. That can produce a missing-file message even when the original Windows component was legitimate.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
kbdinmar.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the detected path, threat name, and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because an application says it is missing.
Restore or allow the item only after verifying that it is in a normal Windows system directory and is digitally signed by Microsoft. If the file was detected in a downloads folder, temporary directory, user profile, or unrelated application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, investigate the detection rather than repeatedly allowing it. Run:

- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan or Full scan.
- Follow the prompts and let Windows restart if required.
Microsoft explains how to review detections in Protection History.

Fix 5: Verify the file path, publisher, and signature
A genuine Windows copy should normally be in a Windows system directory and should identify Microsoft as its signer.
Check the path
If an application identifies a path:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported location.
- Right-click
kbdinmar.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for the full path.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature from Microsoft.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility components. Do not assume that every computer has identical copies in both locations, and do not blindly copy one file into both directories.
Check the file description
In Properties > Details, a genuine file may identify:
- File description: Marathi Keyboard Layout
- Original filename:
kbdinmar.dll - Company: Microsoft Corporation
- Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
Metadata alone is not proof of authenticity. A downloaded file can have copied metadata, so the signature, path, and Windows servicing state matter more.
Microsoft identifies the Marathi layout on its official keyboard layout page. The keyboard identifier is documented in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard identifier reference.
Fix 6: Diagnose a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch
The “not designed to run on Windows” or bad-image wording can indicate an invalid binary or incompatible architecture. It does not prove that the file is simply missing.
Do not choose a replacement based only on a download page’s “32-bit” or “64-bit” label. The correct file depends on the Windows build, language components, servicing state, and the process requesting it. Public file catalogs also list historical versions and can disagree about where a particular build belongs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Windows repair instead:
- Check Settings > System > About > System type.
- Confirm that Windows Update has completed.
- Re-add Marathi through Language & region.
- Run DISM.
- Run SFC.
- Restart Windows.
If only a 32-bit application reports the error, that does not make copying a 32-bit DLL into the application directory safe. The application may have a broken installer or an incorrect reference to a Windows component.
Fix 7: Repair the application that reports the error
If Windows input works normally and only one application reports kbdinmar.dll, the application may be damaged or incorrectly requesting a system component.
First identify whether the error appears:
- only when launching that program;
- only when opening a particular document or feature;
- only after an application update;
- or during every Windows login.
Then use the program’s official repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart and test the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer. Back up application data first where appropriate.
For a game, use the launcher’s verify, repair, or equivalent file-integrity feature. Do not place a downloaded kbdinmar.dll in the game folder. This file belongs to Windows language and keyboard components, and no verified evidence ties it to a specific game, Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET runtime.
If reinstalling the application does not help but Windows input is healthy, inspect its startup entries, compatibility settings, and vendor support documentation. The application may be making an incorrect DLL request.

kbdinmar.dll is a keyboard-layout component, not a normal hardware driver. Device Manager generally will not repair a missing keyboard-layout DLL. Use it only when the physical keyboard, USB device, or keyboard driver is also malfunctioning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected physical keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a hardware-driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available.
- Restart and test.
Do not remove keyboard devices merely because kbdinmar.dll is mentioned in an application error. That can create a second problem without restoring the language component.

Tracking down which of many hardware drivers is stale can take longer than checking each device manually. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the free scan shows its findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace the Windows language-component repair above.
Fix 9: Use repair reinstall or recovery options
If DISM, SFC, language reinstallation, and Windows Update do not restore the component, Windows itself may have broader damage.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart when Windows finishes.
- Add Marathi again and test with Windows key + Spacebar.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft describes the process in its Windows repair reinstall guidance.
System Restore
If the problem began after an update, cleanup utility, driver tool, or malware incident:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers. Use a restore point only when its date and affected changes make sense.
If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation. Microsoft lists the available paths in its Windows recovery options.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 kbdinmar.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A keyboard-layout DLL is not normally repaired by registering it in the system registry. The command may produce an error, appear to succeed without fixing the language component, or distract from the actual problem.
Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference. For kbdinmar.dll, use language-feature installation and Windows servicing instead.

Why downloading kbdinmar.dll is unsafe
A random DLL download can contain:
- the wrong Windows build;
- the wrong architecture;
- an invalid or missing signature;
- a modified binary;
- a file intended for a different application;
- malware;
- or a file that does not repair the damaged component store.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also create version and servicing conflicts. Copying a file from another PC is not a safe shortcut for the same reasons.
The supported sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, Windows language features, Microsoft repair tools, and an official application installer when the application is the actual damaged component.
Final verification checklist
After repairing the system, confirm:
- Marathi appears under Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- The Marathi or InScript keyboard appears under Language options.
- Windows key + Spacebar switches to the layout.
- The original program starts without the error.
- The file, if present, is in a normal Windows system directory.
- Its digital signature is valid and identifies Microsoft.
- DISM completed successfully.
- SFC completed without reporting unrepaired corruption.
- Antivirus is not repeatedly quarantining the file.
- No manually downloaded copy was left in an application, temporary, or downloads folder.
If the error returns after a successful repair, investigate disk health, malware, third-party cleanup utilities, and the application or startup entry requesting the file. A recurring failure is evidence of an underlying problem, not a reason to keep replacing the DLL.
FAQ
Is kbdinmar.dll a safe Windows file?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component when it is located in a normal Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. A file with the same name elsewhere requires closer inspection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do I need to change my display language to Marathi?
No. You can add Marathi as a keyboard layout while keeping another language as the Windows display language.
Does kbdinmar.dll belong to Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is part of Windows Marathi keyboard input. Reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX is not a supported fix for this file.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally, no. regsvr32 is not a generic missing-DLL repair command and is not the normal repair method for a keyboard-layout component.
What if Windows says the specified module cannot be found?
That wording can mean the requested file is missing, but it can also indicate a dependency or loader problem. Re-add Marathi, run DISM and SFC, and determine whether the error comes from Windows or only one application.
What if antivirus keeps removing the file?
Do not repeatedly restore it. Review Protection History, verify the path and Microsoft signature, run a full or Offline scan, and repair the Windows component through language settings and DISM/SFC.
