You may see messages such as “kbdiultn.dll is missing from your computer,” “kbdiultn.dll was not found,” or “Error loading kbdiultn.dll.” Other reported variants include “The procedure entry point could not be located,” “kbdiultn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error,” and “Cannot register kbdiultn.dll.”
The 60-second answer
kbdiultn.dll is a Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component called Inuktitut Latin Keyboard Layout. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game DLL, or ordinary application library.
Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its input system when a matching keyboard layout is needed. Microsoft identifies the Inuktitut–Latin layout with keyboard layout ID 0000085D and documents keyboard-layout DLLs as components containing the tables that translate keyboard input into keys and characters.
Do not download kbdiultn.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32 or an application folder. The file may be the wrong version, wrong architecture, unsigned, modified, or unrelated to the Windows installation. Repair Windows first, then re-add the affected language or keyboard layout.

The safest order is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Re-add the relevant keyboard or language through Settings.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Use Windows recovery if the protected file cannot be repaired.
Why Windows reports a kbdiultn.dll error
The usual causes are different from the causes of a missing game or runtime DLL.
A damaged Windows component
The file may have been removed or corrupted by a failed update, filesystem damage, an interrupted repair, or a problem in Windows’ protected component store. This is the most important cause to address first.
A missing or inconsistent keyboard layout
The Inuktitut Latin layout may be absent, partially installed, or left with stale configuration after a language change, Windows upgrade, or profile migration. This is especially plausible when the message appears during sign-in, language switching, or input-method initialization.
Microsoft’s keyboard-layout documentation lists the layout in Windows keyboard support beginning with Vista and Server 2008, but public file metadata also points to an older Windows XP-era build. That does not prove the same filename and version are shipped in every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. Do not copy an old file into a modern system simply because its name matches.
Antivirus quarantine or cleanup software
Windows Defender or another security product may have quarantined a genuine system file. Aggressive cleanup software can also remove files it incorrectly identifies as unnecessary.
A matching filename alone does not prove that a file is safe. A malicious file can use the same name.

Disk corruption or malware
Drive errors can damage protected files. Malware can replace, modify, or imitate a Windows DLL. If the file exists in an unusual location or has an invalid signature, treat that as a security problem rather than a normal missing-file problem.
A wrong file copied manually
A 32-bit file database record does not prove that every current Windows copy is 32-bit. Windows filesystem redirection also makes manual architecture advice unreliable. An old or mismatched DLL can cause “bad image,” entry-point, or compatibility errors even when the file is present.

This is the correct first repair for a missing, corrupted, or “not designed to run on Windows” message.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Test the keyboard or application again.
If the error remains, repair the component store and protected files.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the layout again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC depends on, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a suitable cached version is available. See Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM repair guidance.
If SFC says it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test. If it says it found corruption but could not repair some files, run DISM once more, restart, and run SFC again. Persistent failures require the recovery steps later in this guide.

Fix 2: Re-add the keyboard or language layout
If the error occurs while changing languages or using Inuktitut input, rebuild the layout through Windows Settings.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the language associated with the keyboard.
- Click the … button beside it.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard.
- Select the required Inuktitut or Inuktitut Latin layout if it is listed.
- Restart Windows and test input.
If the keyboard is already listed, remove it first, restart, then return to the same screen and add it again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Choose the installed language.
- Click Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the required layout.
- Restart Windows.
The layout may be associated with a different language than expected. Microsoft notes that installing the matching language may be necessary before the keyboard appears. Use Microsoft’s keyboard and input-layout instructions if the option is not visible.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Check whether security software removed the file.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Expand an item to inspect its name, location, and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file if you have confirmed that it is the genuine Microsoft component and that the detection was incorrect. Do not approve a suspicious copy merely because it is named kbdiultn.dll. Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance.
After handling a confirmed false positive:
- Update Microsoft Defender.
- Run a Full scan.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the file remains unavailable.

Fix 4: Check whether the problem affects one user profile
A damaged input-language configuration can affect one Windows account while another account works normally.
- Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Create a temporary local account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Add the keyboard layout and test it.
If the error disappears in the new profile, copy your personal files to the new account and rebuild the language settings there. This is a diagnostic step, not proof of a kbdiultn.dll-specific profile bug.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdiultn.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by the Windows input system and is not documented as a COM server requiring registration.
Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and switches in its regsvr32 reference. If you receive “Cannot register kbdiultn.dll,” that usually means the wrong repair method was applied. Continue with DISM, SFC, and the Windows language settings instead.
Fix 6: Update keyboard hardware drivers only for separate hardware problems
Device Manager does not normally restore a missing keyboard-layout DLL. Use it only if the physical keyboard itself is failing, disappearing, or showing a driver warning.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a physical keyboard that still fails, right-click it again, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and let Windows rediscover it. Do not uninstall random devices to fix a layout-DLL message.

Fix 7: Use recovery when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows
If SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption:
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Restart and run DISM again.
- Run SFC again.
- Review the result after the second scan.
- If corruption continues, back up important files.
- Use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Choose the recovery option appropriate to your situation.
System Restore can help if the error began after a recent software or update change and a restore point exists. If Windows remains damaged, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation from official Microsoft media. Avoid replacing the DLL with an old XP-era copy.
Should you download kbdiultn.dll manually?
No. A standalone download does not establish that the file belongs to your Windows build, language configuration, servicing state, or architecture. It can also bypass Windows servicing and introduce a tampered file.

Copying the file into an application directory is particularly inappropriate because kbdiultn.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout component, not an application-private runtime.

There is no evidence that those runtimes are the general solution. Start with Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the keyboard-language settings.
What if the file exists but Windows says it is invalid?
Do not trust the filename. Check its digital signature, scan the file and system with Microsoft Defender, and run DISM followed by SFC. A mismatched historical build can be just as problematic as a missing file.
Does a 32-bit listing mean I need a 32-bit DLL?
No. An indexed metadata record does not define the correct file for every current Windows installation. Let Windows restore its own component instead of choosing an architecture manually.
