ntlanui.dll Not Found: Trace the Error on Windows 10 and 11

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing or repairing anything, record:

  • Which program shows the error: Windows itself, a legacy utility, or an older application.
  • When it appears: during startup, when opening a network-share window, or only when launching one program.
  • Your Windows version: press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter.
  • Your system type: open Settings > System > About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
  • The exact message: common reported wording includes “ntlanui.dll is missing,” “ntlanui.dll was not found,” “Error loading ntlanui.dll,” and “ntlanui.dll could not be loaded.”
  • The file path, if one is shown: do not download a replacement before checking whether the path belongs to Windows or an application.
  • Recent changes: updates, antivirus detections, disk cleanup, a driver installation, or malware removal.

ntlanui.dll is a historical Microsoft Windows networking user-interface library associated with LAN Manager and network-share management. If a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 program reports it, the safest explanation is usually a damaged legacy component, an old application expecting an obsolete Windows file, or a misleading dependency error rather than a missing modern runtime package.

What ntlanui.dll was used for

Historical Windows documentation describes ntlanui.dll as the “Lanman Control dll.” It supported user-interface functions related to managing network shares, including operations historically exposed through functions such as ShareCreate and ShareManage.

The file appeared in older Windows media and inventories, including Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP-era systems. That history matters because there is no reliable Microsoft documentation showing ntlanui.dll as a normal standalone component of current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations.

It is not established as part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a particular modern game, or a named third-party application. Do not assume that installing one of those packages will restore it.

A message mentioning ntlanui.dll also does not prove that the file itself is missing. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by the DLL cannot be loaded. An old application may also be requesting a file that the current Windows release never shipped.

Fix 1: Identify the program that calls the DLL

The fastest safe fix depends on the caller.

If one old application reports the error

  1. Note the application name in the error window.
  2. Close the message.
  3. Right-click the application’s shortcut and choose Open file location.
  4. Check whether the application is old, portable, copied from another computer, or designed for Windows 9x, NT, 2000, or XP.
  5. Visit the application’s original developer or publisher through a trusted channel.
  6. Download the current installer or update from that publisher.
  7. Uninstall the old copy from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Install the official replacement and test it again.

If the application is no longer maintained, compatibility mode may help:

  1. Right-click the program’s executable.
  2. Choose Properties > Compatibility.
  3. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  4. Choose an older Windows version only if the program was designed for it.
  5. Select Run this program as an administrator if the application genuinely needs elevated access.
  6. Choose Apply > OK, then launch it.

Compatibility mode cannot recreate a system component that the application fundamentally requires. If the program still expects an obsolete Windows networking library, use a supported virtual machine or an original, separately maintained legacy system rather than copying random DLL files into the application folder.

If Windows itself reports the error

Do not begin by reinstalling an unrelated application. Continue with the Windows repair steps below. A damaged system file, incomplete update, storage problem, or malware cleanup may be responsible.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

On supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations, install pending updates before running the repair commands.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
  6. Open Start, type Command Prompt.
  7. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  8. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  9. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the error.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the component source that Windows uses, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when an appropriate source is available.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, install updates and run the two commands again. If SFC reports no integrity violations but the same program still requests ntlanui.dll, the program may be invoking an obsolete DLL that is not part of the current Windows installation.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through repair results and trying to determine what changed. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair or reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive path.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove a file after detecting corruption or a suspicious replacement. Do not restore a file solely because its name is ntlanui.dll.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Open the relevant detection.
  5. Record the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
  6. Check whether the path was a genuine Windows system location or an application directory.
  7. If the detection concerns a downloaded or recently copied DLL, leave it quarantined.
  8. If you have strong evidence that the file is a genuine Microsoft file and the detection is a false positive, use the available restore action only after confirming the file’s original location and digital signature.
  9. Run Scan options > Full scan.

Restoring a quarantined file puts it back on the computer and may require you to allow it again. If the error appeared after malware removal, repair Windows and scan the entire system instead of blindly restoring the file.

Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help if the error began after an update, driver installation, application installation, or system change.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Choose Next.
  3. Select a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Choose Scan for affected programs to review what will change.
  5. Select Next > Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, updates, and installed programs. If no restore point exists, continue with DISM and SFC or use Windows recovery options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Reinstall or repair the calling application

If only one program produces the message and Windows repair finds no corruption, repair that program rather than installing a system DLL.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair and test the program.
  6. If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the program’s settings or local data are backed up.
  7. If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Install a fresh copy from the original publisher.

If the program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows, install the publisher’s version intended for that system. Do not place an arbitrary 32-bit file in System32, or a 64-bit file in SysWOW64, based only on the folder name. Windows uses those directories according to its compatibility architecture, and a mismatched DLL can create additional loader errors.

Fix 6: Update a related driver only when the caller identifies one

ntlanui.dll is not established as a driver file. Driver work is relevant only if the error began immediately after a network adapter, storage, chipset, or system-device change and Device Manager shows a problem.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate COM or OLE registration entry point. It is not a universal DLL installation command.

There is no evidence that ntlanui.dll should be registered with:

regsvr32 ntlanui.dll

Historical references to ntlanui.dll being called by rundll32.exe for network-share interface functions are different from COM registration. Running regsvr32 may produce an entry-point or registration error and does not demonstrate that the file is corrupt.

Should you download ntlanui.dll?

No. Do not download it from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application’s folder.

An unofficial replacement may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, dependencies, or malicious modifications. Even a genuine file from an incompatible historical Windows release can cause version conflicts. Copying a DLL may also hide the real cause, such as storage corruption, malware, a damaged installation, or an obsolete application.

Use these safer sources instead:

  • Windows Update and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC repair process.
  • The original Windows installation media for an older system.
  • The original application’s official installer or repair package.
  • Windows Recovery Environment or an in-place repair installation where supported.

There is no verified Microsoft standalone ntlanui.dll download, Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET installer that should be used for this repair.

If the computer runs Windows XP or older

If the affected system is Windows XP or an earlier release, treat this as a legacy Windows repair problem. Use the correct original installation media or service-pack repair path for that exact release. Do not substitute a file from Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or a third-party archive merely because the filename matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows XP reached end of support on April 8, 2014. Current Windows repair instructions and modern redistributables should not be assumed to support it. If the old application is important, preserve its data and consider running it in an appropriately isolated, supported virtual-machine setup.

If Windows cannot boot

Enter Windows Recovery Environment:

  1. Start the computer and interrupt startup when necessary until recovery appears, or use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now when Windows is accessible.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
  3. Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  4. Use Command Prompt for offline repair only when you can identify the correct Windows drive letter in recovery.
  5. If repair still fails, use an in-place repair installation where supported.
  6. Back up personal files before a reset or clean reinstall.

FAQ

Is ntlanui.dll a virus?

The filename alone cannot establish that. It is a genuine historical Microsoft Windows component, but malware or an altered replacement can use the same filename. Check the path, digital signature, quarantine record, and system scan results.

Is ntlanui.dll part of Windows 11?

It is not reliably documented as a normal standalone component of current Windows 11 installations. If a Windows 11 program requests it, identify the caller before assuming that Windows simply lost a required modern file.

Can SFC restore it?

Only if the current Windows installation has an appropriate protected copy or repair source. SFC cannot restore a file that the current Windows release never shipped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found”?

The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Repair the caller, inspect recent system changes, and avoid assuming that copying another version of ntlanui.dll will solve the loader failure.

What is the safest final step?

For current Windows, install updates, run DISM followed by SFC, check quarantine, and use System Restore if a recent change triggered the problem. For an old application, reinstall that application from its original publisher. For Windows XP or earlier, use the correct original media rather than an unverified DLL download.
