Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the error: every application, or only one game or desktop program?
- When it appears: during sign-in, language switching, typing, or program launch?
- Which Windows edition you use: Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Whether Windows is 64-bit: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Whether Windows Security recently quarantined a file.

kbdru1.dll is a genuine Windows component, not a general-purpose game runtime. It implements Microsoft’s Russian (Typewriter) keyboard layout, identified by Windows as 00010419.
The safest repair order is:
- Reinstall the Russian (Typewriter) keyboard layout.
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker.
- Repair the affected application if only one program reports the error.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall if the component remains damaged.
What kbdru1.dll is
kbdru1.dll is the Russia(Typewriter) Keyboard Layout file supplied with Microsoft Windows. Microsoft identifies the Russian (Typewriter) layout with keyboard identifier 00010419 in its Windows keyboard identifier documentation.

It is a keyboard-layout DLL, not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET library
- A printer driver
- A hardware driver
- A game-specific dependency
The file is associated with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Corporation. Windows loads it through its keyboard-layout infrastructure when the corresponding input layout is installed and used. Microsoft describes the layout itself on its Russian (Typewriter) keyboard page.

%SystemRoot%System32kbdru1.dll
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64kbdru1.dll
Do not assume that both files must exist on every computer. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files while 32-bit processes can be redirected through SysWOW64. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
There is no single file size or version that applies to every Windows installation. Windows releases, updates, architecture, and servicing levels can change the file.
What the error messages mean
Windows or an application may display wording such as:
The program can't start because kbdru1.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because kbdru1.dll was not found.
kbdru1.dll was not found.
Error loading kbdru1.dll. The specified module could not be found.
kbdru1.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The application was unable to start correctly.
The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the program displaying the message.
“Missing” or “not found” can mean that the file is absent, damaged, quarantined, or unavailable to the process requesting it. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that kbdru1.dll itself is absent. Windows may instead be unable to load a dependency, may be dealing with an architecture mismatch, or may have an invalid keyboard-layout registration.
“Not designed to run on Windows” usually indicates corruption, an incompatible binary, or a file that is not the correct Microsoft component. It is not a reason to download another copy from an unverified source.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Russian (Typewriter) layout
This is the quickest targeted repair when the problem involves Russian input, language switching, the sign-in screen, or the Windows input indicator.

- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the language that contains the keyboard. Russian layouts may appear under Russian or under another language currently installed.
- Select the three-dot menu beside that language.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, find Russian (Typewriter).
- Select its menu and choose Remove.
- If it is not listed, select Add a keyboard and choose Russian (Typewriter).
- If Russian is not available, return to Language & region, select Add a language, add Russian, and then open its language options.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft notes that a keyboard layout can appear under the language associated with the keyboard rather than the current display language. Its instructions for changing layouts are available in Microsoft’s keyboard layout guide.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Choose the relevant language.
- Select Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Russian (Typewriter).
- Choose Remove.
- Select Add a keyboard and add Russian (Typewriter) again.
- Restart the computer.
How to tell whether it worked
Open a text editor and select the input indicator on the taskbar. Switch to the Russian (Typewriter) layout and type a few characters. If the layout works and the original program no longer reports the DLL error, no DLL replacement is needed.
If Windows refuses to remove or add the layout, continue with Windows Update and the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave a protected Windows component unavailable.
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
- Test the keyboard layout and the affected application.
Do not download kbdru1.dll separately as a substitute for Windows servicing. Microsoft does not provide a standalone redistributable package whose purpose is to install this keyboard-layout file.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this when the error affects multiple programs, appeared after an interrupted update, or remains after reinstalling the keyboard layout.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker because DISM can repair the Windows component source that SFC uses. Follow the procedure in Microsoft’s guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause while Windows obtains or processes repair files.
When DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, run SFC in the same elevated window:

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
Interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means restart and retest before doing anything else.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means inspect the CBS log and continue to the advanced recovery section.
- If DISM cannot find repair files, use Windows Update first. Microsoft also documents using a matching repair source with
/Sourceand/LimitAccess; the source must match the installed Windows version and architecture.
The manual process of identifying the damaged component, choosing a matching repair source, and repeating DISM and SFC can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it detects; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
Fix 4: Repair the program that reports the error
If kbdru1.dll appears only when one application starts, the application may have a damaged installation or stale keyboard-layout registration. The Windows DLL can be healthy while that program’s files or configuration are broken.
Repair a Microsoft Store or modern Windows app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data.
The Tool Desk

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Complete the installer’s repair process.
- Restart the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install a fresh copy from the application’s official publisher. For a game, use the launcher’s own Verify files, Repair, or equivalent function.
If the error occurs only in that program after Windows passes its system-file checks, reinstalling or repairing that program is more appropriate than copying a DLL into its installation folder.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can prevent Windows from using a file it has quarantined. Do not immediately restore it simply because its name looks familiar.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
kbdru1.dll. - Expand the detection and review its path, threat name, and action.
- If Microsoft Defender identifies a legitimate Microsoft-signed system file as a false positive, follow the available review and restoration options.
- Run a full scan after restoring it.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the computer. Its Protection History guidance explains how to review detections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not choose Allow on device blindly. If the file is in an unexpected application folder, has an unclear signature, or is associated with a suspicious detection, leave it quarantined and run a Microsoft Defender scan instead.
Fix 6: Check architecture and avoid manual copying
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not use interchangeable binaries. On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 redirects some 32-bit access to the 32-bit system directory.
This is why downloading a file described only as “64-bit” or “32-bit” is not a reliable repair. The correct file must also match the Windows release, servicing level, system component registration, permissions, and architecture expected by the loader.
Do not:
- Copy a downloaded DLL into
System32. - Copy a downloaded DLL into
SysWOW64. - Place it beside a game executable.
- Replace a protected file with an older build.
- Mix a file from another Windows release.
- Use an unsigned or modified copy.
Manual replacement is appropriate only for an administrator following Microsoft’s documented system-file replacement procedure with a known-good file from the same Windows version and architecture. For most users, DISM and SFC are safer because they use Windows servicing rather than an arbitrary file.
Do not use regsvr32 for kbdru1.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by Windows’ keyboard infrastructure and is not normally registered like a COM component.
Running:
regsvr32 kbdru1.dll
may produce an error similar to:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean you need a different copy of the file. It means this registration method does not apply. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation covers DLLs that support registration entry points, not a general requirement to register every DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix this file?
No. Those packages are not the normal source of kbdru1.dll. It is a Windows keyboard-layout component, so installing a runtime package is unlikely to restore it.
Use Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET only when the application displays a separate error that specifically identifies the relevant runtime. Do not install them as a substitute for Windows Update, layout reinstallation, DISM, or SFC.

Is Device Manager relevant?
Usually not. kbdru1.dll is not a hardware driver, so reinstalling a keyboard entry in Device Manager does not normally restore this file.
Device Manager can help when the physical keyboard itself is not working:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected hardware keyboard.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
This addresses hardware-driver problems, not a missing Windows keyboard-layout DLL. Do not remove keyboard hardware entries merely because an application mentions kbdru1.dll.
If you have several outdated hardware drivers and do not know which one is involved, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify them; the scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair kbdru1.dll.
Advanced recovery when SFC and DISM fail
Review the SFC log
If SFC says it could not repair some files:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open
sfcdetails.txton the desktop. - Review the
[SR]entries for the affected file. - Restart and test again after any successful repair.
The log can show whether Windows identified the file but could not replace it.
Use System Restore
System Restore is justified when the error began immediately after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
Reinstall the current Windows version
On Windows 11, some systems provide a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
Microsoft documents this option in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
If that option is unavailable, an in-place repair installation using matching Windows installation media may be appropriate. Back up important files first and choose the option that preserves personal files and applications. A clean installation should be a last resort because it removes applications and can remove personal data if performed incorrectly.
FAQ
Is kbdru1.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component. Safety depends on the actual file, its location, signature, and how it arrived on the computer. A file with the same name from a download site or an unexpected application directory is not automatically genuine.
Is kbdru1.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot identify malware. If Microsoft Defender reports a detection, review the detection details and file path rather than restoring it automatically. Scan the system and repair Windows through official servicing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a game mention a Windows keyboard file?
A program can load or inspect Windows keyboard layouts, use Windows input APIs, or contain a damaged reference to a system component. If only one game reports the error, repair or verify that game before replacing Windows files.
Should I download kbdru1.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an outdated build, or a modified file. They also leave the underlying Windows component store or keyboard-layout registration damaged. Use Windows Update, reinstall the layout, and run DISM followed by SFC.
Do I need to register kbdru1.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not the correct repair for a keyboard-layout DLL.
Should both System32 and SysWOW64 contain it?
Not necessarily. The applicable files depend on Windows architecture, release, and component servicing. Do not treat a public file listing as a requirement for every installation.

The filename alone cannot identify the cause. Persistent errors can involve disk corruption, malware, a damaged user profile, an unsupported legacy program, or a Windows installation requiring in-place repair. Test another user account if possible, run a full Defender scan, check disk and system logs, and use System Restore or a repair reinstall when the timing points to broader Windows damage.
