On 64-bit Windows, the native system copy normally belongs in:
%windir%System32
A 32-bit copy used by a 32-bit process is normally handled through:
%windir%SysWOW64
Do not manually choose between these directories. Windows uses WOW64 file-system redirection so that 32-bit programs find the correct architecture.

The exact wording can vary. Reported variants include “kbdth3.dll is missing,” “kbdth3.dll was not found,” “Error loading kbdth3.dll,” and “kbdth3.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” These messages identify a failed load attempt, not necessarily the root cause.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update, interrupted servicing operation, or incomplete language installation can leave Windows with inconsistent components.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately request it.
- Try the affected application or Thai keyboard again.
If the error disappeared, the missing component was likely restored or the servicing operation completed.
If Windows Update fails, record the failure and continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly retry the same update before repairing the component store.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair sequence when Windows itself reports the error or multiple programs are affected. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for some time.
A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before continuing.

Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:

- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use the advanced repair-source guidance from Microsoft rather than downloading the DLL.
If the component store itself is damaged, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not guess at a source path.

Fix 3: Reinstall the Thai language or keyboard
If the error began after changing language settings, removing a language pack, or switching input layouts, repair the input component through Settings.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the language associated with the Thai input.
- Select its … menu.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, check whether the required Thai layout is listed.
- If it is missing, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the Thai keyboard layout that you need.
- Restart Windows and test the input method.
If Thai is not listed as an available language, select Add a language, install Thai, and then return to Language options to add the keyboard.
Do not remove the existing language immediately. Add and test the replacement first. Removing a language while an application or user profile still references its layout can create another incomplete configuration.
To test the layout, select the language indicator on the taskbar and switch to the Thai keyboard. If the layout works but one application still produces the DLL message, the Windows input component is probably not the only problem.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false positive, a damaged-file detection, or a malware event. The quarantine event alone does not prove that the file was safe.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
kbdth3.dll, keyboard layouts, or Windows servicing. - Expand the relevant entry and note the path and detection name.
- Do not select Restore or Allow on device until the file’s location and Microsoft signature have been checked.
A genuine system copy should be in a Windows system directory, not an arbitrary game folder or temporary download directory. If malware is suspected, run a full scan and repair Windows through DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or official installation media instead of restoring an unverified file.

Fix 5: Determine whether only one application is affected
A DLL message does not prove that the failing program owns the file. Windows input components can be requested by an application, an installer, a launcher, or the operating system.
Check the scope of the problem:
- Test the Thai keyboard in a basic Windows text field.
- Open another application and switch input layouts.
- Sign in with another Windows user account if available.
- Check whether the message appears during Windows startup or only after launching one program.
If only one old program fails:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected program.
- Open its menu and select Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official publisher or trusted installation media.
If the program has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Scan files, use that feature. An application-specific failure after SFC reports no violations points toward the program’s files, configuration, dependencies, or compatibility rather than a damaged protected Windows copy.
There is no verified basis for attributing kbdth3.dll to a particular game, installer, or runtime package. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a generic DLL website recommends them.

Fix 6: Locate the requested copy and check architecture
Use these commands to see whether Windows can locate copies of the file.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
where /r "%windir%System32" kbdth3.dll
where /r "%windir%SysWOW64" kbdth3.dll
These commands locate files but do not prove that a file is genuine. Right-click a result in File Explorer, open Properties, and review the Digital Signatures and Details tabs where available.
To check the installed Windows edition, run:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the 32-bit system view even though the operating system itself is 64-bit. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, or place either file beside an application as a workaround.
If the error says “specified module could not be found,” the named file may exist while a dependency, path, or architecture requirement fails. This is why manually copying a file often changes nothing.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdth3.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration routines such as DllRegisterServer. It does not generally install or repair Windows keyboard-layout DLLs. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose here.

A registration error after running regsvr32 does not diagnose the original problem. It adds an unrelated error and can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A keyboard-layout DLL is not a hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally restore kbdth3.dll.
Use Device Manager only if the computer also has a separate keyboard or input-device problem:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected hardware.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a working keyboard device just because an application displays a kbdth3.dll message.

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after an update, application installation, driver change, language change, or other system modification.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings but normally does not remove personal documents. It can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore instructions.

Fix 10: Repair Windows without deleting apps and files
If DISM and SFC fail, Windows Update is broken, or the error affects multiple components, use a repair reinstall before Reset or a clean installation.
On Windows 11, check for the built-in repair option:

- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Microsoft documents the process here.
Another option is an in-place installation:
- Obtain official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition.
- Open the media from within Windows.
- Run
setup.exe. - Choose Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue only after that option is confirmed.
Microsoft’s installation-media guidance explains this process. Back up important files before any major repair.
Why downloading kbdth3.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and random replacement files. A downloaded copy can have:
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible Windows version
- A mismatched language component
- A damaged or altered signature
- Malware or unwanted software
- No relationship to the dependency that actually failed
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or an application folder can also hide the real problem and create a second loader conflict.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows language settings, DISM and SFC, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, and official Microsoft installation media. If a particular application is damaged, repair or reinstall that application from its official source.

No. Those directories serve different process architectures under WOW64. Let Windows servicing restore the appropriate copy.
Why does SFC report no violations when the application still fails?
SFC checks protected Windows files. The application may have its own damaged files, an incorrect path, an unsupported legacy dependency, a configuration problem, or a missing language component. Repair the application and test the keyboard outside it.
What if the error persists after every repair?
Confirm whether the error occurs in Windows itself or only in one program. Check Protection history, verify the actual requested path, reinstall the Thai keyboard, and repair the affected application.
