BlackLabelHQ’s MediEvil Recomp is an open beta for PC, and its creators say they did not use AI to write its code. The project adds options such as widescreen support and increased draw distance, according to GamesRadar+, but it is unfinished: the maintainers warn that features may be incomplete and things can break. You also need to extract the game data from a legally owned North American PlayStation copy; the recomp does not supply the original game.
What MediEvil Recomp is—and what it is not
MediEvil Recomp is a PC project that reworks the original PlayStation game with additional display and rendering options. It is not a new MediEvil game, nor a ready-to-play package containing the original game files. BlackLabelHQ’s project README says users need a legally owned North American PSX copy and must rip its data themselves.
The GitHub releases page labels version 0.1b an open beta, not a full release. The README cautions that features may not be fully functional and that things can break. That warning matters when weighing the PC options against the original game: the recomp may offer more ways to present MediEvil, but its behavior is not as settled as a finished release.
What the PC beta reportedly changes
GamesRadar+’s October 2, 2026 report lists a set of optional presentation and performance features. The project’s beta caveat still applies, so the list should not be read as a guarantee that every option works reliably in every setup.

These options give players more control over how the game appears and runs on PC. They are not inherently a better way to experience MediEvil: someone who values its original PlayStation presentation may prefer that, while someone who wants a wider image or smoother motion may welcome the recomp’s choices.
Does MediEvil Recomp use AI?
BlackLabelHQ’s README states: “This Recomp was made by human hands, no AI is involved in writing this code!” It also describes a policy against AI-written contributions; GamesRadar+ reports the project says, “we value human work; PRs made with AI will be closed.” Those are the maintainers’ stated policy and account of the project, not an independent audit of every contributor’s workflow.

What Jay Wilson said about GenAI and MediEvil
GamesRadar+ identifies Jay Wilson, also known as Jay Gunn, as MediEvil’s co-creator and lead designer, and quotes him objecting to generative AI in connection with the game. Wilson’s full qualification is important: “I have no idea about what this is other than what I see posted here. But I agree with what the comments are saying – keep GenAI the fuck away from MediEvil… now and in the future! The charm of those days of dev’ was that everything was handmade with barely any premade tools or shortcuts.”
Wilson was expressing a view about AI and the game, not reviewing MediEvil Recomp or assessing its code. His comment should not be mistaken for an endorsement of the beta.

What you need to play it on PC
The project README requires a legally owned North American PlayStation version of MediEvil, which the user must rip. It lists BIN/CUE or CHD formats. The project does not provide the original game data, and the requirement is specifically for the North American PS1 release.
- Obtain a legally owned North American PS1 copy of MediEvil.
- Rip the game data from your own copy in a supported BIN/CUE or CHD format.
- Use the project’s README for the current setup instructions and the release page for the available beta build.
Should you choose the original PS1 version or the recomp?
| Consideration | Original PS1 version | MediEvil Recomp PC beta |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Original PlayStation presentation | Reported options include widescreen, aspect-ratio scaling, and increased draw distance (GamesRadar+, October 2, 2026) |
| Motion and rendering | Original game behavior | Reported frame-rate support, frame interpolation, PGXP, and Better Terrain (GamesRadar+, October 2, 2026) |
| Release status | Released PlayStation game | Version 0.1b is labeled an open beta, not a full release; the project warns features may be incomplete and things can break (BlackLabelHQ) |
If you want a more adjustable PC presentation and are comfortable with beta software, the recomp is an option—provided you supply game data from your own qualifying copy. If you want the original presentation and a finished release, play the PlayStation version instead.
