Ken Kutaragi ‘Understands’ Physical-Game Fans? Sony’s Lin Tao Actually Made the Statement

The statement that Sony “understands” PlayStation fans’ attachment to physical games was not attributed to Ken Kutaragi in the available reporting. Sony Group CFO Lin Tao made the remark during the company’s FY2026 first-quarter earnings Q&A, as Sony prepares to stop manufacturing discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028.

What Sony announced for January 2028

A PlayStation.Blog announcement published July 1, 2026, says physical game-disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. Sony says those games will instead be offered digitally through the PlayStation Store and through retailers selling digital formats.

The policy is limited to new releases. Sony explicitly says it does not affect games that were already released, or games releasing before January 2028, in disc format. A PS5 disc game that qualifies under that statement is not being withdrawn merely because the manufacturing policy changes.

Why Sony is moving away from discs

Lin Tao identified the broader digitalization of entertainment content as the biggest reason for the decision. GameSpot reported that Sony said 82% of consumers were choosing digital games. That figure is presented as Sony’s consumer split, not as a universal statistic for every market or platform.

Sony’s announcement describes the change as an adaptation to shifting consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry. It also says players will continue to have purchase options through both the PlayStation Store and retailers, although those retail options may be digital rather than disc-based.

Who said Sony understands physical-game fans?

The key sentence came from Sony Group CFO Lin Tao during the FY2026 first-quarter investor Q&A: We understand those emotions; we want to consider that. Gematsu reproduced a longer translation in which Tao said games are loved, connected to people’s fond memories, and that Sony wants to keep exploring how to engage gamers in a future digital ecosystem.

Ken Kutaragi remains central to PlayStation history as the creator associated with the original console, but the current statement about fans’ feelings is not attributed to him in the GameSpot or Gematsu reporting cited for this announcement. Treating the quote as a Kutaragi comment changes who made the policy-related acknowledgment.

Why players do not want physical games to disappear

A Windows Central poll published July 4, 2026, gathered 1,577 votes. Among those respondents, 71% said they would miss buying physical games, 16% wanted more options, and 13% were happy to embrace a fully digital future. This is a reader poll, not a representative survey of all PlayStation owners.

Comments in that discussion repeatedly focused on several practical and emotional issues:

  • What's Included: Playstation 5 PS5 Disc Version; Wireless controller; USB cable, AC Power Cord. HDMI cable.
  • A tangible collection: Some players want a physical copy on a shelf even when a digital edition is available.
  • Ownership and control: Players question what access means when a purchase is tied to an account or platform service rather than represented by an item they hold.
  • Resale and lending: A disc can be treated as a collectible or passed to another person, concerns that commenters do not associate with ordinary digital purchases.
  • Preservation: Collectors want games to remain playable and findable if storefront policies, accounts or online services change.
  • Trust and choice: Many comments did not reject digital buying; they asked Sony to preserve a physical option alongside it.

Readers commonly suggested optional external disc drives, separate console versions or another way to keep existing collections useful. Those are requests expressed in the discussion, not features Sony has announced.

Can I still buy physical PS5 games?

Yes, for existing releases and for games that arrive in disc form before January 2028, Sony’s announcement says the transition has no impact. New releases from January 2028 onward are the uncertain category: Sony’s policy allows retailers to sell them digitally, but does not promise a playable disc in a box.

Used copies, collector editions and older PS5 releases therefore remain separate from the manufacturing cutoff. The announcement concerns production of discs for new games, not a recall of discs already in circulation.

Will PS5 discs still work after 2028?

Sony says games already released, or releasing before January 2028, in disc format are unaffected. That means the 2028 date is not a stated expiration date for those discs. It is the start of the new-production policy.

The announcement does not establish how every game will function if it requires patches, servers or account services, so the safest reading is narrower: Sony is not ending the announced compatibility or sale status of pre-2028 disc releases through this policy.

Will boxed games contain a disc or a download code?

Some post-2027 boxed releases may use a download code instead of a disc. GameSpot reported that Sony has suggested code-in-a-box releases could remain possible, citing GTA 6 as an example. That reporting does not establish a universal packaging rule, and Sony’s official wording permits digital formats at retailers without promising that every boxed edition will include a code.

When buying a future boxed game, check the package description for whether it says disc, download code or another digital-delivery format. A box on a store shelf will not by itself prove that it contains game data on a disc.

Do I own a digital PlayStation game?

Sony’s announcement is about manufacturing and distribution, not a new definition of digital ownership. Digital access remains governed by the account and platform terms attached to the purchase. That is why physical-game fans distinguish a disc they can keep, lend or resell from a digital purchase whose access is managed through a storefront account.

The policy does not remove previously purchased digital games, and it does not convert an existing disc purchase into a digital license. It changes how Sony plans to deliver new releases after January 2028.

What to watch before the transition

  • Whether Sony gives region-specific details for retailer code-in-a-box editions.
  • Which games, if any, receive genuine disc releases after December 2027.
  • How collector editions identify disc content versus a download code.
  • Whether Sony announces an official way to use external drives or preserve physical collections on future hardware.

For now, the firm facts are the January 2028 cutoff for new disc production, the continued status of pre-2028 disc releases, and Lin Tao’s acknowledgment that the emotional attachment to physical games matters to players.
