If eth0 vanished after a kernel update, the network adapter is often still present under a predictable name such as eno1, ens33, enp3s0 or enx followed by its MAC address. Find the live name first, then update the network service that owns the configuration. Only when no Ethernet device appears at all should you treat the incident as a driver, firmware or hardware-enumeration failure.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What “missing eth0” usually means
Modern Linux systems commonly no longer call the first Ethernet device eth0. Since systemd/udev version 197, the default naming scheme assigns stable names using firmware data, hardware slot information, physical path or the interface MAC address. The systemd project describes the change this way: “Starting with v197 systemd/udev will automatically assign predictable, stable network interface names for all local Ethernet, WLAN and WWAN interfaces.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Names therefore look like:
eno1— an onboard Ethernet portens33orens1— a firmware- or slot-derived name, common in virtual machines and serversenp3s0— a PCI bus and slot pathenx001122334455— a name derived from the MAC address
A kernel update can expose the mismatch. The kernel enumerates the adapter with its new predictable name, while NetworkManager, systemd-networkd or ifupdown still has a profile that explicitly refers to eth0. The profile then fails to activate even though the controller and driver are working.
The first decision is binary: is the adapter visible to the running kernel? If a non-loopback Ethernet interface appears in the commands below, start with naming and configuration. If no Ethernet interface appears anywhere, skip to the driver and firmware investigation section.

Step 1: Find the interface the kernel actually created
Use a local console, virtual-machine console, serial terminal or recovery shell if remote access has already failed. Run all three commands; each presents the same state from a slightly different angle.
ip link
ls -l /sys/class/net
ip -br link
lo is the loopback device and is not your physical network adapter. Look for an Ethernet-style name such as eno1, ens33, enp2s0 or enx.... The abbreviated output from ip -br link is particularly useful because it shows the name and whether the link is UP, DOWN or has carrier information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a new Ethernet name is present
The hardware has been enumerated. Do not reinstall the kernel or force eth0 back yet. Record the exact name and MAC address, then inspect which service is supposed to configure it.
ip -br link
ip link show <name>
Replace <name> with the discovered interface, for example enp3s0. An interface that is present but administratively down is still a naming/configuration case; it can be brought up after its profile is corrected.
If only lo appears
No Ethernet device was created in the network namespace. A stale profile cannot explain that result by itself. Continue with boot logs, PCI inspection and driver checks before changing naming policy.
Step 2: Confirm why that name was selected
udev exposes the naming data it considered for each interface. Query the properties for the live name:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →udevadm info /sys/class/net/<name>
Inspect these properties in the output:
ID_NET_NAME_ONBOARD— a name based on firmware’s onboard indexID_NET_NAME_SLOT— a name based on a firmware-reported slotID_NET_NAME_PATH— a name based on the physical bus path
The highest-priority usable property determines the predictable name under the active naming scheme. A virtual machine may expose a stable slot name such as ens33; a physical PCI adapter may receive a path name such as enp2s0. If the interface is named enx plus hexadecimal characters, the MAC-address method was used.
Record these values before making changes. They explain why a name differs from an older installation and help you select a stable match if you later create a custom .link file.

Step 3: Identify the service that owns networking
Do not edit every network configuration format or restart every networking daemon. First determine which manager is active:
systemctl is-active NetworkManager systemd-networkd networking
The output may show one active service and the others inactive, or it may show more than one service on a system with a layered setup. Use the manager that actually owns the affected interface and profile.
NetworkManager
List devices and saved connection profiles:
nmcli device status
nmcli connection show
Find the profile whose connection is tied to eth0. Depending on the distribution and profile format, the interface binding may appear as a connection interface name or in a keyfile. Change that binding to the discovered name, such as eno1 or enp3s0. You can inspect a specific profile with:
nmcli connection show "<connection-name>"
After editing the profile, activate it explicitly:
nmcli connection up "<connection-name>"
If the profile is obsolete, create or modify one through NetworkManager rather than maintaining a second conflicting configuration. Restart NetworkManager only if the profile change requires it:
sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager
Use the least disruptive action first: bringing up the corrected profile avoids interrupting unrelated interfaces.
systemd-networkd
List links and inspect the discovered interface:
networkctl list
networkctl status <name>
Open the matching .network file under /etc/systemd/network/ and update its Name= match, or adjust another match section so it selects the real interface. Ensure that only one intended .network file matches the link. Then reload and reconfigure networkd:
sudo networkctl reload
sudo networkctl reconfigure <name>
If the service itself needs restarting, use:
sudo systemctl restart systemd-networkd
ifupdown
On systems using ifupdown, inspect /etc/network/interfaces and any files included from /etc/network/interfaces.d/. Change a stanza such as auto eth0 or iface eth0 inet dhcp to the discovered name. A minimal DHCP example is:
auto <name>
iface <name> inet dhcp
Replace <name> with the actual interface. Apply the change with the distribution’s ifupdown service or ifup/ifdown commands, taking care not to disconnect the console session you are using for recovery.

Cloud-init, virtualization and generated profiles
Some images generate NetworkManager or networkd configuration at boot. If a corrected file is overwritten on the next boot, inspect the image’s cloud-init or virtualization networking configuration and change the source template as well as the generated profile. The interface name shown by ip link remains the authoritative value for the current boot.
Step 4: Read logs before changing persistent naming
When the interface appears, logs can reveal whether it was renamed normally or whether a driver briefly failed and later recovered. Search the current boot:
Recommended Free Tools
journalctl -b -k
journalctl -b -u systemd-udevd
dmesg
Look for the discovered name, messages about renaming, firmware load errors, link initialization failures and repeated probe attempts. A message showing a successful device registration followed by a name such as eno1 points toward a stale profile. A firmware error or probe failure points elsewhere.
Map the PCI controller to the driver with:
lspci -nnk
For the Ethernet controller, note the “Kernel driver in use” and “Kernel modules” lines. If no driver is in use, identify the expected module from the hardware ID and verify that the module exists for the running kernel. If the module is present but not loaded, a controlled module-load test from the console can distinguish a load problem from a naming problem; do not unload a driver carrying your only active management connection.
Step 5: Use the previous kernel as a controlled comparison
Reboot and select the previous kernel from the GRUB advanced-options menu. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that every update is defective.
On both kernels, record:
- the output of
ip -br link - the relevant lines from
journalctl -b -k - loaded modules and the
lspci -nnkdriver binding - the active NetworkManager, networkd or ifupdown profile
If the previous kernel shows eth0 while the new kernel shows eno1, the difference is most likely naming or a change in the naming scheme’s available metadata. If neither kernel shows an Ethernet device, the issue is not a simple rename. If only the new kernel lacks the device and its logs show a probe or firmware failure, keep the previous kernel available while you investigate the driver package, firmware and kernel configuration.
Choose the least risky permanent fix
Compare possible remedies against five questions: is the NIC enumerated, which service owns configuration, is the proposed name based on stable data, must an old script still use eth0, and will the choice survive hardware changes and future kernels?
| Remedy | Use when | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update the active profile to the predictable name | The interface appears as eno1, ens33, enp... or enx... |
Matches the distribution default; no boot parameters; preserves predictable naming | Legacy scripts hard-coded to eth0 must be updated |
Create a systemd .link rule |
You need a stable, human-readable custom name | Can match a stable MAC or path and provide one deliberate name | Requires careful matching; names must not collide; the managing service may need to be restarted |
Boot with net.ifnames=0 |
An old script absolutely requires legacy names | Disables the current predictable naming scheme and can restore eth0-style names |
Gives up stable firmware/path naming and can reintroduce probe-order conflicts |
Boot with biosdevname=0 |
A system uses the biosdevname naming layer and needs it disabled | Prevents that layer from selecting its names | It does not repair a missing driver or replace a correctly configured modern naming scheme |
| Driver or firmware repair | No Ethernet device appears in ip link or /sys/class/net |
Addresses enumeration failure directly | More invasive; requires hardware, kernel and firmware diagnosis |
Preferred fix: keep predictable naming and update configuration
For most installations, use the name the running system selected. Change the NetworkManager profile, systemd-networkd match or ifupdown stanza, then activate that configuration. This keeps the stability benefits of names derived from onboard, slot, path or MAC information and avoids relying on kernel probe order.

After activation, verify both administrative state and actual connectivity:
ip -br link
ip addr show <name>
ip route
ping -c 3 <gateway-address>
Use a gateway address appropriate to your network. A working link with an address but no default route is a routing or DHCP problem, not an interface-name problem. A default route with failed name resolution points to DNS rather than the interface rename.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When and how to create a custom .link file
A systemd .link file is appropriate when you need a deliberate name that is still tied to stable hardware identity. Match on a property that will not change accidentally, normally a MAC address or a physical path, and assign a name that does not conflict with any kernel-generated name.
Place the rule in /etc/systemd/network/ with a lexically early filename, for example 10-lan.link. A MAC-based example is:
[Match]
MACAddress=00:11:22:33:44:55
[Link]
Name=lan0
Use the actual address shown by ip link; the example address is illustrative and should not be copied unchanged. A path match can be more appropriate for a permanently installed PCI port, while a MAC match follows the adapter if it moves to another slot.
systemd.link warns that requesting a name such as eth0 can race with the kernel’s own assignment. Prefer a distinct name such as lan0 unless compatibility makes a legacy name unavoidable. After installing a rule, the service managing the interface may need to be stopped and restarted, or the system may need a reboot, so schedule the change from a local or out-of-band console.

Temporarily test the parameter
- Reboot to the GRUB menu.
- Highlight the normal entry and press the key shown by GRUB to edit it.
- Find the line beginning with
linux. - Append
net.ifnames=0to that line, separated by a space. - Boot with the edited entry and run
ip -br link.
This test is temporary; the parameter applies only to that boot. If the adapter returns as eth0, update the persistent bootloader configuration only after confirming that every profile and script expects that name. On systems where biosdevname is involved, test biosdevname=0 as documented by the distribution.
Understand the cost
Disabling predictable names trades stable hardware-derived identity for legacy naming. With multiple adapters, kernel probe order can change after a kernel update, firmware change or hardware replacement, so the first adapter may not always receive the same eth0 assignment. That is why changing profiles to the real predictable name is safer for long-lived systems.

If no Ethernet device appears anywhere
When ip link and /sys/class/net contain only lo, changing NetworkManager or adding a .link file cannot create the device. Work through the following branches:
- PCI visibility: run
lspci -nnk. If the Ethernet controller is absent, check firmware or virtual-machine hardware assignment, BIOS/UEFI settings and the host configuration. - Driver binding: if the controller is listed but “Kernel driver in use” is missing, check that the required module is installed for the running kernel and inspect boot logs for module-load errors.
- Firmware: search
journalctl -b -kanddmesgfor firmware-file failures or device initialization errors. Install the distribution’s matching firmware package through an alternate network path or local media when necessary. - Kernel regression: if the previous kernel detects the controller and the new one does not, keep the previous kernel as the boot default or fallback while comparing module versions, configuration and logs.
- Physical or virtual assignment: on bare metal, check that the adapter is seated and enabled; in a virtual machine, verify that the virtual NIC is attached to the guest and connected to the intended network.
Only after the device is enumerated should you return to profile activation and interface naming.
Common failure modes after the rename
The profile still says eth0
NetworkManager may show the device as unavailable, while networkd reports no matching network file. Search the manager’s profile for the old name and replace it with the live name. Do not create a second DHCP profile unless the original is genuinely obsolete; competing profiles can produce duplicate addresses or routes.
The interface is present but has no address
Check that the corrected profile is active, DHCP is enabled where expected, and the link has carrier. Use ip addr show <name> and the manager’s status command. A link without an address is an activation or DHCP issue, not evidence that the NIC disappeared.
The interface has an address but applications cannot connect
Inspect ip route for a default route, then test the gateway by address. If the gateway works but hostnames do not, inspect DNS configuration. If the route is wrong, correct the profile’s gateway, metric or DHCP settings rather than changing the interface name again.
A custom name never appears
Check that the .link file is in /etc/systemd/network/, its filename sorts early enough, the match value exactly matches the device, and another rule is not winning first. A name collision with an existing link can also prevent the requested name. Reboot from a console or stop and restart the owning network service as required by the rule and distribution.
Remote access was lost during the change
Use an out-of-band console, hypervisor console or physical terminal. Avoid restarting the network manager over the only SSH connection unless you have a recovery path. Once the interface is stable, test a new SSH session before closing the console.
Verification checklist
ip -br linkshows the intended Ethernet name and an appropriate state.udevadm info /sys/class/net/<name>reports the expected onboard, slot or path metadata when applicable.- The active manager has one profile or match that targets that name.
ip addr show <name>contains the expected address.ip routecontains the intended default route.- A gateway ping succeeds, followed by a DNS and application-level test.
- After a reboot, the same name and profile activate without manual commands.
- Legacy scripts no longer contain an unjustified hard-coded
eth0, or the system intentionally uses a documented compatibility parameter.
Bottom line
A post-kernel-update “missing eth0” is most often a predictable-name change combined with a profile that still targets the old name. Discover the interface with ip link, inspect its udev naming properties, update the one network manager that owns the configuration, and verify the route and connectivity. Use a carefully matched .link rule only when you need a custom stable name. Reserve net.ifnames=0 or biosdevname=0 for software that truly cannot be updated, and treat a system with no Ethernet device in ip link or /sys/class/net as a driver, firmware or enumeration problem instead.
