Defeating Rykard stops any Volcano Manor contract steps you have not completed and reported to Tanith. You should finish the available assassinations, return for their rewards, and check the drawing-room table before entering the boss fight.
Tanith is not simply removed from the game, however. After Rykard dies, she can still be found at his remains in the boss arena for a final interaction. That scene remains available, but it does not restart the contract chain. If you want to see it, speak to her and do not attack her.

What Rykard’s defeat changes
Rykard’s death acts as the cutoff for Tanith’s Volcano Manor contract progression. Any assassination assignment you have not finished, or any completed assignment you have not properly reported for its reward, should be treated as time-sensitive. Once the boss is dead, the normal sequence of receiving contracts, completing them, and returning to Tanith no longer proceeds.

Quick outcome guide
| Situation when Rykard dies | What happens | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| An available Manor contract has not been completed | That contract progression is cut off. | Complete it before the boss fight whenever possible. |
| A contract is complete and you have reported to Tanith | Its reward has already been claimed; that step is settled. | Continue with any remaining contracts before fighting. |
| The third contract was completed but you did not report back | The quest-path record identifies a recoverable reward on the drawing-room table, associated with the Red Letter contract. | Inspect the table after the fight if the report-in step was missed. |
| Rykard is dead and you want Tanith’s final scene | Tanith can be found at Rykard’s remains in the arena. | Return to the boss room and talk to her. |
| You attack Tanith in the arena | Her defender is triggered and her story ends. | Do not attack her if you want the closing interaction. |
| Rya still has unfinished steps | Her remaining questline is also locked by Rykard’s defeat. | Resolve Rya’s branch before the boss. |
| You have Patches’ Dancer’s Castanets | They can still be offered to Tanith after Rykard, but the gesture does not alter her story. | Offer them only if you want to complete that optional interaction. |
Why the timing matters
Volcano Manor uses a staged contract structure. Tanith provides assignments, you complete the requested target, and you return to her for the associated reward and the next stage. Rykard’s defeat changes the state of that sequence. The game still supports a scene with Tanith afterward, but the progression that made her a contract giver has already ended.
This is why finding Tanith after the battle can be misleading. Her presence does not mean the missed letters or assassinations can be reopened. It means the character has a remaining scene tied to the aftermath of Rykard’s death. Plan around the cutoff rather than assuming that a later conversation will repair an unfinished contract.
What to do before entering Rykard’s arena
Use this order if you want the most complete Tanith run on the current character:
Recommended Free Tools
- Review the Manor’s available assignments. Identify every contract you can currently undertake before committing to the boss fight.
- Complete each available assassination. Do not leave an assignment merely because you intend to return later; Rykard’s defeat is the relevant cutoff.
- Return to Tanith after each completion. Reporting back is a separate step from defeating the target. Speak with her and collect the reward while the contract progression is still active.
- Check the drawing-room table. If a letter or reward is waiting there, collect it before moving on. This is especially important when the third contract has been completed but the report-in conversation has not happened.
- Finish any Rya steps you care about. Her unfinished branch has its own missable timing at Rykard’s defeat, so do not treat it as automatically preserved by leaving the Manor contracts incomplete.
- Only then fight Rykard. Once the outstanding contracts and related conversations are handled, the boss encounter will not cost you those remaining progression steps.
This sequence separates three actions that players often combine: killing a contract target, reporting the result, and collecting a reward. The game treats them as different milestones, so completing only the first one is not the same as finishing the contract.
If Rykard is already dead
You have not lost every Tanith interaction. Travel back to the boss arena and look for Tanith at Rykard’s remains. Speak with her there to see the post-Rykard scene.

- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
Approach this encounter as a conversation, not as a new quest hub. The available evidence supports the closing scene, but not a revival of the ordinary contract sequence. You should therefore expect no fresh chain of assignments after the dialogue.
Do not attack Tanith. Striking her causes her defender to appear and ends her story, which removes the interaction you returned to see. If your goal is the scene, leave your weapon alone and use the normal conversation prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe missed third-contract reward
One edge case matters if you defeated Rykard immediately after completing the third contract. The quest-path record describes a reward associated with the Red Letter contract that can remain recoverable from the drawing-room table when the player has not yet reported back to Tanith.
That does not mean every unfinished contract is restored. It is a specific recovery path for a reward that was prepared but not collected. If you remember completing the third assignment but never speaking with Tanith afterward, inspect the table rather than assuming the reward has disappeared. Treat this as a limited exception to the general cutoff, not as permission to postpone all reports until after the boss.
Tanith’s arena scene and the danger of attacking
The arena visit has two separate outcomes. Talking to Tanith preserves the remaining interaction and lets you hear the aftermath scene. Attacking her changes the encounter immediately: her defender is triggered, and her story is considered ended.

That consequence is avoidable. If you are exploring the arena after the battle, keep a neutral stance, approach Tanith, and interact without using an attack input. Players who want to test whether she can be fought should do so only on a save where losing the scene is acceptable.

Rya is a separate timing problem
Rya’s unfinished questline is also locked when Rykard dies. This is related to the same boss-state transition, but it is not the same quest as Tanith’s contract chain. Completing Tanith’s assignments does not automatically resolve Rya’s branch, and visiting Tanith after the fight will not reopen it.
If Rya’s story matters to your playthrough, handle her remaining conversations and objectives before entering Rykard’s arena. Keep that check separate from the Manor contract checklist so that finishing one character’s steps does not create a false sense that the other character is safe.

Patches’ Dancer’s Castanets can still be offered to Tanith after Rykard’s defeat, including during the post-boss stage in the arena. The quest-path information indicates that this gesture does not change Tanith’s story or create another contract step.
In practical terms, the item is optional. Give it to her if you want to perform the interaction associated with it; do not expect it to restore missed assassinations, unlock a new reward, or alter the ending of her quest.

Choosing when to fight Rykard
| Your priority | Recommended timing | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| See every available Tanith contract step | Fight Rykard only after completing and reporting all available assignments. | The contract chain stops at the boss’s defeat. |
| Claim a completed third-contract reward you forgot to report | Check the drawing-room table after the fight. | The Red Letter reward may be recoverable there. |
| See Tanith’s closing interaction | Return to the arena after Rykard dies and talk to her. | The post-boss scene remains available. |
| Complete Rya’s remaining story | Finish her branch before the boss. | Her unfinished questline also locks at Rykard’s defeat. |
| Use the Dancer’s Castanets | Offer them to Tanith after the fight if desired. | The optional gesture does not change her story. |
Common misconceptions
“Tanith disappears permanently when Rykard dies.”
Not exactly. Her normal contract progression ends, but she can still be found at Rykard’s remains for a post-boss scene.
“Finding her in the arena means I can continue the letters.”
No. The arena conversation is a closing interaction, not a continuation of the assassination chain.
“Completing a target is enough; I can report later.”
Reporting and collecting the reward are separate milestones. Return to Tanith before the boss whenever you want the contract step fully secured.
“The Castanets change the outcome.”
The item can be offered, but the recorded quest path says the gesture does not alter Tanith’s story.
“Finishing Tanith protects Rya.”
Rya has her own missable branch. Resolve it separately before Rykard if you want to see its remaining content.
How certain are these edge cases?
The guidance on the cutoff and the arena scene comes from a community-maintained Elden Ring wiki and a community quest-path data file. The cited material does not identify a specific game version, and no official FromSoftware or Bandai Namco walkthrough or patch note establishes a different rule. For that reason, the safest advice is to treat the contract cutoff as firm, collect rewards before the fight, and regard the table recovery as a specific documented edge case rather than a guarantee for every missed step.
Practical answer
Killing Rykard stops the unfinished Tanith contract quest, but it does not erase Tanith’s post-boss presence. Complete and report the Manor assignments first, inspect the drawing-room table for a missed Red Letter reward, finish Rya’s branch if needed, and then visit Tanith in the arena afterward without attacking her.
