King Charles III’s upcoming Caribbean tour will address the history of slavery and colonialism, Buckingham Palace says. That does not amount to a promise of a formal apology or reparations: the Palace says the program will focus principally on the present and future of the host countries.
What the Palace says about slavery’s history
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said there are “important discussions taking place in various fora about colonial legacy and the intergenerational impact of the transatlantic trade in enslaved persons,” according to Reuters.
The spokesperson added that the visit “will not shy away from ‘the darkest days of our past’,” while saying that, in keeping with host nations’ wishes, it would principally focus on “the vibrant present and promising future of each country.” The Palace also described discussion of colonial legacy as important but “primarily matters for governments to address,” and said Charles would renew his “personal, wholehearted and continuing commitment” to addressing past wrongs and enduring inequalities, The Guardian reported.
When and where is the tour?
The tour is scheduled for 27 October to 4 November 2026. The Guardian reports that Charles will visit the Bahamas and Guyana first, then Queen Camilla will join him in Antigua and Barbuda, where he is expected to speak at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 1–4 November 2026, Reuters reports. The itinerary and remarks are plans; the tour has not yet taken place.

Does this mean Charles will apologize or offer reparations?
No such commitment has been announced. Addressing the history, expressing remorse, issuing a formal apology, providing reparations, and referring a legal question for review are different actions. The Palace’s statement concerns the visit’s subject matter; it does not promise an apology or compensation.
The Guardian reported that the UK government reiterated its rejection of calls for slavery reparations in the month before its report. It also noted that modern British royals have expressed remorse but have not issued an official apology for the slave trade. At the 2024 Commonwealth summit, Charles said: “None of us can change the past but we can commit with all our hearts to learning its lessons and to finding creative ways to right the inequalities that endure,” according to The Associated Press.

What is Jamaica’s petition about?
Jamaica has petitioned Charles to refer questions about slavery and the UK’s responsibility for damages to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, AP reported. This is a request for a legal referral, not a ruling on reparations. AP says the King has no personal say over whether to make the referral and acts on government advice.
Historical context for the debate
Reuters reported in 2026 that at least 12.5 million Africans were abducted and sold into slavery by European merchants from the 15th to 19th centuries, and that Britain was responsible for transporting an estimated 3.2 million people. These are figures as reported by Reuters, not a claim that the agency originated the underlying estimates.

Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807; enslavement was outlawed in the British Empire on 1 August 1834, AP reports. A 2023 House of Commons Library briefing describes Caribbean Commonwealth realms’ calls for an apology or reparations, CARICOM’s Reparations Commission, and Buckingham Palace’s 2023 cooperation with an independent study by the University of Manchester and Historic Royal Palaces into the monarchy’s historical relationship with the slave trade.

Because the tour is still upcoming, its actual speeches, host-government responses, and any change in UK policy are not yet known. The Palace’s announcement establishes that slavery’s legacy will not be avoided in the program, while setting a principal emphasis on the host countries’ present and future.
