How to choose an early horse
Compare the four horse attributes shown in your inventory, but treat them as a snapshot rather than a permanent ranking. Tack, perks, and the horse’s state can change visible values, and published guides disagree on some figures. Compare horses with similar gear and check their current stats in-game before spending.

- Stamina: useful for sustained galloping.
- Capacity: matters most if you expect to carry a lot of gear or loot.
- Speed: helps cover ground quickly.
- Courage: matters when riding through danger or into combat, where a less courageous horse may be more prone to panic.
Six early-game horses to consider
The following shortlist and base-stat figures come from The Filibuster Blog’s February 4, 2025 guide. They are guide-reported values, not an independently verified current-game ranking; equipment, perks, and source differences can affect comparisons.
| Horse | Reported base stats Stamina / Capacity / Speed / Courage |
Acquisition described | Best fit and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pebbles | 127 / 138 / 32 / 12 | Reclaim from the Semine trader through a dialogue check; a separate guide reports a purchase fallback around 410 groschen, with the amount affected by Charisma. | Low-cost default with a reported long-term perk. Her base figures are modest beside some paid options. |
| Bitterklee | 131 / 208 / 38 / 8 | Buy from the Semine horse trader. | A capacity-focused paid option; the reported courage is low. |
| Tarrant | 160 / 108 / 45 / 4 | Buy from the Semine horse trader. | The shortlist’s speed pick, but its reported capacity and courage are low. Confirm the name and current details in-game. |
| Soldier | 144 / 168 / 34 / 15 | Buy from the Semine horse trader. | A balanced candidate for players who value courage; the guide does not establish him as a universal upgrade. |
| Herring | 169 / 138 / 40 / 14 | Accept during Trosky story progression. | A free story mount with a reported distance perk. A straightforward alternative if you do not want to buy a horse. |
| Schkrle | 184 / 238 / 30 / 17 | The six-horse guide describes stealing him from Nabakov and registering him through Mikolai. | Reportedly strong stamina, capacity, and courage, but the route involves theft and extra ownership handling. Verify availability before pursuing it. |
These figures are not directly comparable to every other published stat list. Dot Esports and PCGamesN report different horse values, including for Pebbles and Herring. Use the table as one guide’s snapshot, not as a definitive current-game stat sheet.

Pebbles or Herring?
Choose Pebbles for an early, low-cost mount
At Semine, speak with the horse trader and try the dialogue check to reclaim Pebbles. A guide reports that she can instead be purchased for around 410 groschen if persuasion fails; the exact price can vary with Charisma. Guides also report that Pebbles gains the Good Old Pebbles perk after about 35 km of riding. Published post-perk stats conflict, so check her inventory entry rather than relying on a single guide’s upgraded numbers.
Choose Herring if the story offers him
Herring is the free story-path alternative during Trosky progress. Guides report that his Red Herring perk becomes available after approximately 50 km. If you have already received him, compare his displayed stats and perks with Pebbles before paying for another mount; which one suits you depends on your priorities and the gear you use.

When to consider the other four
Bitterklee, Tarrant, and Soldier are presented as Semine purchases in the six-horse guide. Treat them as role-based candidates, not guaranteed upgrades: Bitterklee for capacity, Tarrant for speed, and Soldier for a more courage-oriented balance. Check the trader’s current price and each horse’s inventory stats before buying.
Schkrle is a different kind of option because the described route involves stealing and then registering the horse. Guides discussing stolen mounts note that keeping one can require extra steps. If a simple, dependable early acquisition matters more than pursuing a specific stat profile, Pebbles or the story’s Herring offer a less involved route.
