It is an open-world action RPG set in 15th-century Bohemia during a civil war—not a fantasy chosen-one adventure—and its historical world, demanding combat, and practical routines are central to the experience. Whether it will be your kind of RPG depends on how much you enjoy that slower, more simulation-minded approach.
What kind of RPG is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II?
Deep Silver describes the game as an open-world action RPG set amid a medieval civil war in 15th-century Bohemia. You follow Henry, a blacksmith’s son seeking to avenge his murdered parents. That premise gives the role-playing a different emphasis from a story built around magic, prophecy, or saving the world. Henry’s journey is personal, and the game ties character development to the things you do: skills improve through use, while weapons, stealth, blacksmithing, and alchemy connect to related abilities. The result is a character whose growth is meant to emerge from how you play, not just from choosing a class at the start.

Combat asks for attention and preparation
Combat is built around parries, combos, weapon choice, and keeping equipment maintained. Warhorse says it refined the system to feel more intuitive without removing its challenge. Those are the developers’ descriptions of their design goals, not a guarantee that every player will find the difficulty comfortable. If you prefer combat that rewards learning timing and adapting to your equipment, that challenge can make encounters feel consequential; if you want a fast, forgiving action game, it may instead feel like friction. The game links activities such as stealth, weapon use, blacksmithing, and alchemy to skills that develop through use. That supports a style of role-playing in which your routines and decisions help shape Henry, rather than treating progression as a separate menu exercise. It also means the systems can ask you to engage with more than combat to get the character you want.
Everyday needs support the simulation
Warhorse has cited food, health, and stamina preparation as details intended to strengthen the feeling of living in medieval Bohemia. The studio’s design principle is that “Every feature has to serve the player’s immersion.” It also said, “Our philosophy has been to prioritize gameplay over realism – realism should never become a burden.” That balance matters: the game aims for a convincing world, but its designers have also described making saving more accessible and combat more intuitive rather than pursuing realism at any cost. How the historical world was built
Warhorse described using geographic data, historical military maps, and surviving structures to reconstruct the setting. Some details no longer exist, so the team interpreted them using broader knowledge of the period. Senior game designer Ondřej Bittner explained one such case to Xbox Wire: “We know there was a tower there, but it burned down.” That is a useful way to understand the game’s historical approach: researched and grounded, but not a claim that every location is a perfect reconstruction. Who is likely to enjoy it?
The game is a strong fit if you want an RPG where a historical setting, practical preparation, character skills, and player decisions all contribute to the sense of inhabiting a world. Its appeal is less certain if you mainly want fantasy spectacle, streamlined combat, or systems that stay out of your way. The same simulation details that make Bohemia feel lived in for one player may feel like chores to another.

That personal fit is why I call it the best RPG I’ve played rather than the best RPG outright. The claim is about what I value: a specific historical place, role-playing expressed through practiced skills, and systems that try to make everyday life part of the adventure. PC Gamer named it its 2025 Game of the Year, but that is the publication’s recognition, not proof of a universal genre ranking. Co-founder and executive producer Martin Klima put the game’s ambition this way: “This game is serious about taking players seriously,” as quoted by PC Gamer.
