That is the clearest route for a newcomer choosing among the three numbered games. It follows the main progression without asking you to absorb the series’ optional side stories before you know Sora, his friends, the Keyblade and the central conflict. The wider series does matter, especially before Kingdom Hearts III, but you can add those entries deliberately rather than turning a simple three-game decision into a maze.
The short answer: start with Kingdom Hearts, then II, then III
The numbered order is the best first-time route:
- Kingdom Hearts (the Final Mix version in current collections)
- Kingdom Hearts II (Final Mix)
- Kingdom Hearts III
This is an editorial recommendation for a reader deciding among the three numbered entries, not a claim from Square Enix that every player must follow one mandatory order. It is simply the least confusing way to learn the premise, meet the important characters and see the numbered story advance in sequence.

| Game | Where it belongs in a first playthrough | What you should know before starting | Best reason to play it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdom Hearts | First | Nothing beyond the basic Disney and Final Fantasy crossover premise is required. | It establishes Sora’s journey, the Keyblade, the worlds and the conflict with the Heartless. |
| Kingdom Hearts II | Second | Play the first game before it; its story follows from the events and relationships established there. | It continues the numbered narrative instead of asking you to begin in the middle. |
| Kingdom Hearts III | Third | At minimum, know the first two games. Side entries provide additional context. | It functions as the payoff to the numbered route and is easiest to follow after that foundation. |
Why the order matters
Although the games visit familiar Disney and Pixar settings, Kingdom Hearts is not an anthology in which each numbered title resets its characters. Nintendo describes the main story this way: “The main story follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder, as he and his friends travel to iconic Disney and Pixar worlds and take on the Heartless and defeat darkness in each world.” The numbered games are chapters in that continuing story, so character introductions, terminology and consequences accumulate.
Starting with III can still let you explore its individual worlds, but it removes the gradual build-up that makes the central conflict understandable. Beginning with II has a similar problem: you encounter a sequel’s status quo before seeing how the first game establishes it. Playing I, II and III in order gives you a stable reference point even if you later decide to fill in the side stories.

What each numbered game contributes
Kingdom Hearts: learn the foundations
The first game is the natural entry point because it introduces the series’ basic vocabulary and its central viewpoint character, Sora. You learn why the Keyblade matters, how the worlds connect and what the Heartless threat means within the story. Those foundations are more valuable than any attempt to begin with a technically newer release.
In the current collection inventory, the version supplied is KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX. Treat that label as the edition name rather than as a separate numbered sequel. If a store listing uses “Final Mix,” it is still the first Kingdom Hearts experience for the purpose of this order.
Kingdom Hearts II: continue immediately after the beginning
Kingdom Hearts II is the second stop because it assumes that the first game has already given you the relevant setting and relationships. Playing it next preserves the intended progression of the numbered games and means that references to earlier events have their proper weight.

The collection lists KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX. As with the first game, “Final Mix” identifies the included edition; it does not change the game’s position as number two in the recommended route.
Kingdom Hearts III: reach the numbered conclusion
Kingdom Hearts III is the final game in this three-title route. It is the point at which the journey you began in the first two numbered games reaches its largest stage. The game is sold in the current collection with the Re Mind downloadable content, but Re Mind should be treated as additional material for III, not as a replacement for the earlier games.
You do not have to complete every side entry before touching III if your goal is simply to experience the numbered trilogy. However, the wider series contains story material between these releases. Readers who want the fullest possible context should use the expanded route below rather than assuming the three numbered games contain every relevant chapter.

The wider story: when to add the other games
Square Enix’s current all-in-one offering is divided into three collections, which shows how much exists beyond the numbers 1, 2 and 3. A completion-minded player can follow the release and story material through those collections, while a newcomer can use them selectively.

| Collection | Included entries | How to think about them |
|---|---|---|
| HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX | KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX; Re:Chain of Memories; 358/2 Days; KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX; Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX; Re:coded | Contains the first two numbered games plus earlier and connecting stories. |
| HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue | 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –; Dream Drop Distance HD; χ Back Cover | Provides additional pre-III context and a film-style backstory entry. |
| Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind | Kingdom Hearts III and the Re Mind DLC | Completes the numbered route and adds the III expansion. |
A practical expanded route is:
- Play Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
- Play Re:Chain of Memories if you want the direct bridge between the first and second numbered games.
- Experience 358/2 Days before or after Kingdom Hearts II according to the format available to you; it supplies additional character context rather than replacing II.
- Play Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.
- Continue with Birth by Sleep Final Mix, then Re:coded, if you want the stories represented in the 1.5+2.5 collection.
- Use Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – and χ Back Cover as the next context-building material.
- Finish with Kingdom Hearts III and then Re Mind.
There is no need to turn that longer route into a prerequisite list for everyone. The important distinction is between the simple numbered path and a complete series catch-up. Choose the latter when understanding every connecting storyline matters more to you than reaching III quickly.
Playable games versus cutscene compilations on Switch 2
Platform format matters. Nintendo’s Switch 2 contents list identifies 358/2 Days and Re:coded as “HD cutscene compilation” entries. In that specific collection format, those names represent edited story presentations rather than complete playable versions in the same sense as Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II or Birth by Sleep.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That distinction affects your route planning. If you want to play every original gameplay chapter, check exactly what your platform edition contains before buying. If your priority is story comprehension, the cutscene compilations can still communicate the relevant narrative material without requiring you to treat them as full-length playable stops.

The North American physical KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] is listed for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 with an October 8, 2026 release date. Square Enix states that the physical version requires an internet connection and an additional data download. The disc or cartridge should therefore not be treated as proof that every included component is available entirely offline.
| Your priority | Most sensible choice | Check before starting |

| Only the numbered story | Access to Kingdom Hearts, II and III in order | Whether your edition includes III with Re Mind and whether a download is required. |
| The broadest story catch-up | The all-in-one package containing 1.5+2.5, 2.8 and III | Which entries are playable and which are cutscene compilations on your platform. |
| Physical ownership | The North American PS5 or Switch 2 physical collection, where available | Region, stock, system compatibility and the required internet download. |
| Digital access on another system | The individual collection offered for your platform | That the current store listing covers your country and edition. |
Decision guide for different first-time players
“I have never played any Kingdom Hearts game.”
Start with Kingdom Hearts, continue to II and then play III. Do not begin by watching a long chronology guide or selecting a side entry at random. The numbered route gives you the clearest introduction with the fewest prerequisites.
“I have played the first game but not the others.”
Play II next. If you want more context afterward, add the connecting entries before moving to III, but you do not need to restart your entire plan around them.
“I only care about reaching III.”
Play I and II first, then III. If you have time for additional story, prioritize the entries in the 1.5+2.5 and 2.8 collections that interest you, remembering that the Switch 2 versions of 358/2 Days and Re:coded are presented as cutscene compilations.
“I want every story chapter.”
Use the expanded collection route and read each product description carefully. The all-in-one package simplifies access, but it does not make every listed title a full playable game on every platform.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with III because it is the newest numbered game. Newest does not mean best entry point; III follows a story that begins earlier.
- Treating every collection item as an equally playable game. On Switch 2, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are listed as HD cutscene compilations.
- Assuming “Final Mix” is a separate sequel. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix are the included editions of the first and second numbered games.
- Assuming a physical copy works fully offline. The current physical all-in-one edition requires an internet connection and additional data download.
- Expecting a universal platform listing. Collection names, formats and availability are region-sensitive; verify your local store page and system.
How big is the series?
Square Enix reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales in 2025. That is a cumulative company-reported figure for the franchise, not a sales total for Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and 3 alone. It helps explain why the current collections combine the numbered games with so many connecting entries, but it does not change the recommendation for a first playthrough.
