KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is listed to launch on Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 8, 2026. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are the older releases; they are not the new console editions. Choose Switch 2 if playing natively on a handheld matters most. If you care most about the early reported image quality in the playable episode 0.2, a reviewer observed higher resolution and draw distance on PS5. Those performance observations are preliminary, not a controlled test of every game in the collection. If you already own a previous digital edition, check the 50% discount before buying again.
How the versions differ
The original editions were released for PS4 on January 12, 2017, Xbox One on February 18, 2020, and Switch as a cloud version on February 10, 2022. Square Enix also lists PC releases. The new editions are for Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with an October 8, 2026 release date listed by Square Enix. The older PS4 and Xbox One releases are not the same listings as the new-generation versions.
The original Switch edition streams the game from the cloud and requires an internet connection, according to Nintendo’s listing. The Switch 2 edition is separately listed as a release for that console; do not confuse it with the prior cloud version.
| Version | What the available information establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | Listed for October 8, 2026. Early reviews report strong results in Dream Drop Distance HD, but variable performance in 0.2. | Players who want a native Nintendo handheld option. |
| PS5 | Listed for October 8, 2026. One early cross-platform reviewer observed higher resolution and draw distance in 0.2 than on Switch 2, while also noting a bloom issue. | Players prioritizing the early reported image-quality advantage in 0.2. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Listed for October 8, 2026. The Xbox storefront lists 4K Ultra HD, 60 fps+, cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere as capabilities; these are not a measured frame-rate guarantee for every scene. | Xbox players who want the new-generation edition and its listed ecosystem features. |
| PS4 and Xbox One | Previous console releases, dated 2017 and 2020 respectively by Square Enix’s platform listing. | Players who already own one of these versions and do not need the new edition. |
| Switch cloud version | Previous Switch release; it streams over the internet rather than running as a native Switch 2 edition. | Existing owners who are satisfied with cloud play or want to check their upgrade discount. |
What is in 2.8?
The collection brings together three distinct experiences, which makes platform performance less uniform than a single-game comparison might suggest. Square Enix describes it as “Features three titles leading up to KINGDOM HEARTS III:” on its collection page.
#1 Best Overall
- New game contents that occur after the storyline of KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep
- Features Aqua as a playable character
- New cinematics from KINGDOM HEARTS X[chi] Back Cover, connecting the storyline to the earliest parts of the series' history showcased in KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained X[chi], the upcoming mobile title
- KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD is a remaster of the game in which Sora and Riku take the Mark of Mastery exam.
- KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – is a playable episode following Aqua after Birth by Sleep.
- KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover is a movie about the Foretellers, not another playable campaign.
The package works as a story bridge toward KINGDOM HEARTS III. The performance comparisons below are especially about the playable 0.2 episode; they should not be treated as a verdict on every included experience.
What early reviews say about performance
Switch 2
Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review reports that Dream Drop Distance HD runs at 1080p in handheld mode and 4K when docked, at 60 fps in both modes. Those are the reviewer’s findings, not publisher specifications. For 0.2, the review reports an unstable 30 fps and attributes the difference to its more advanced graphics; the reviewer says a capped 30 or 40 fps option would have helped.

PS5 compared with Switch 2
RPG Site’s early comparison describes Switch 2’s 0.2 frame rate as uncapped and variable, with improved draw distance over PS4 Pro and visuals otherwise appearing close in several areas. The reviewer observed higher resolution and draw distance on PS5, but also reported a bloom issue on that version. The comparison was incomplete and did not include a finished Xbox Series assessment, so it does not establish a definitive overall winner.
Xbox Series X|S
The Xbox storefront advertises 4K Ultra HD and 60 fps+ among the edition’s features, but those labels do not substitute for a scene-by-scene test. The cited early cross-platform comparison had not completed its Xbox Series evaluation, so there is not enough comparative evidence here to rank Xbox performance against PS5 or Switch 2.

Square Enix says digital owners of a previous individual 2.8 edition on Switch cloud, PS4 or Xbox One qualify for a 50% discount on digital pre-orders and post-launch purchases of the new edition. Nintendo UK separately says owners of the cloud version are eligible for a 50% Switch 2 discount. Confirm eligibility and the price shown in your own regional store account before purchase; the offer is a digital discount, not a general price guarantee. See the terms on the Square Enix collection page and Nintendo UK listing.

- Choose Switch 2 if native handheld play is your priority, or if you want the new Nintendo edition instead of relying on the older cloud stream. Be aware that early Switch 2 reviewers describe 0.2 as variable in performance.
- Consider PS5 if the early reported resolution and draw-distance advantage in 0.2 matters more to you than the reported bloom issue. This is an early reviewer observation, not a comprehensive platform benchmark.
- Choose Xbox Series X|S if you want the new edition in the Xbox ecosystem and value the storefront-listed features. There is not yet a completed cited cross-platform comparison establishing its performance against the other new editions.
- Keep playing on PS4 or Xbox One if you already own the older edition and are content with it; check the digital discount if you are considering a new purchase.
- Keep the cloud version if you already own it and streaming meets your needs. If you want a Switch 2 purchase, verify the regional upgrade offer before paying full price.
Square Enix lists physical purchase paths for Switch 2 and PlayStation on its collection page. Availability at a particular retailer is separate from the publisher’s listing.
