That does not guarantee that a gamepad can navigate every menu or setup screen: Square Enix says a keyboard and mouse may be needed for some portions. If your controller is not detected, buttons are swapped, or the right stick does not work as expected, troubleshoot the specific game and storefront rather than assuming one fix works for every PC release.
Which controllers does Kingdom Hearts support on PC?
Square Enix’s support page lists Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported for the PC version. The page does not identify a specific Kingdom Hearts game, edition, or storefront, so this list should not be treated as a compatibility matrix for every PC release. “Partial support” is the important qualification. Square Enix warns that keyboard and mouse may be needed to navigate a portion of the game. Keep them available, especially for menus or setup steps that do not respond to the controller.
Steam Input and third-party controllers
Steam’s Big Picture documentation lists official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers among the types Steam supports. It also says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported by Steam, and controller support varies by game. Identify your game and storefront first
Before changing settings, note the exact Kingdom Hearts game or collection and whether you launch it through Steam or the Epic Games Store. Input behavior and translation layers can differ between releases. Square Enix’s controller article does not give a per-game or per-storefront compatibility matrix.
For context, Steam’s listing for KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- shows a June 13, 2024 release date and Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or later and DirectX 11 as PC requirements. Kingdom Hearts controller not working on PC: a practical checklist
These are diagnostic steps, not publisher-verified fixes. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it affected detection, menus, or gameplay.
- Connect the controller before launching the game. Check that your operating system or storefront recognizes it. If it is not recognized there, the game is unlikely to resolve the underlying detection issue.
- For Steam, check the game’s controller configuration. Deliberately test native controller input and Steam Input rather than layering multiple translation tools. This is a troubleshooting approach, not a Kingdom Hearts-specific setting recommended by Steam’s general controller documentation.
- Test menus and gameplay separately. A controller that works during gameplay may still have trouble navigating menus. Keep a keyboard and mouse handy for sections where gamepad navigation is incomplete.
- Change one setting at a time and retest. This helps isolate whether the issue is detection, button mapping, or a particular menu rather than masking it with several simultaneous changes.
- Contact the game’s support team if the issue persists. Epic directs players with controller problems in third-party games to the developer or support team; it does not provide technical support for external-device problems in those games. Kingdom Hearts PC controller buttons swapped or right stick not working

If buttons are mapped incorrectly, try the game’s own controller options if you can navigate to them with the inputs available, then test again in both menus and gameplay. For a right-stick problem, first confirm the game recognizes the controller and see whether the behavior changes when you test native input versus Steam Input. Neither step is a guaranteed fix; results may depend on the controller, game, and storefront.

What to avoid assuming
- Steam recognizing a controller does not by itself establish that a particular Kingdom Hearts release supports it fully.
- Square Enix’s partial-support list does not guarantee that every menu or setup step can be completed with a controller.
- Community reports do not establish that disabling Steam Input, launching an Epic game through Steam, unplugging a mouse, installing a driver, or buying a particular controller will fix an issue for everyone.
- There is no basis here to rank controller models or recommend replacing a working device as a sure solution.
