Kirby Air Riders’ City Trial Turns Chaos Into the Point

City Trial mixes five minutes of upgrades and rival interference with a randomly selected Stadium contest. Here’s how its volatility shapes the mode.

Kirby Air Riders’ City Trial is built around a collision of plans: five minutes to upgrade a machine on a floating island, rivals and Field Events that can disrupt that work, and a Stadium contest chosen from four possibilities. That volatility can feel confusing, but it is also the mode’s defining design choice—not a guarantee that every match will be fun for every player.

What happens in a City Trial match?

City Trial takes place on Skyah, where players spend five minutes roaming and improving a machine before taking it to a Stadium contest. Power-ups scattered around the map raise machine stats; Nintendo says players can also take items from rivals or claim a different machine they find. Rival interference and Field Events can upset a setup in progress. When the preparation period ends, the match moves to the Stadium.

The Stadium challenge is selected from four randomly chosen options: Kirby Melee, which asks players to defeat foes; Air Glider, which rewards flying as far as possible; Drag Race, a straight-line speed test; and Target Flight, where players hit score panels. The setup phase therefore rewards finding upgrades and adapting, while the last event tests a more specific ability. A machine and route that seem promising during exploration may not suit the eventual contest.

Nintendo’s official City Trial page lays out this sequence and the five-minute limit. Its August 2025 overview describes City Trial as a returning mode expanded with more room to explore, and names Short Race and Dustup Derby as examples of Field Events.

  • Roam around Skyah to find machines, collect power-ups, and survive through unpredictable Field Events ranging from falling meteors to powerful boss battles. After five minutes of powering up, you and your rivals will compete in one of a whole host of different Stadium contests, each with its own objective. These include drag races, battle arenas, skydiving for points and more, so it helps to be ready for anything!
  • Race to the finish in Air Ride If straightforward racing is more your speed, check out Air Ride: a frantic dash where you can race against five other riders, or compete online or via local wireless. Attack opposing riders, or trail close behind their wake, to gather up stars – and use the speed boost they provide to beat your rivals to the finish line!

Why can it feel chaotic and confusing?

The mode asks players to make decisions while the conditions keep changing. They can search for upgrades, fight rivals, switch machines, or respond to a Field Event, all without knowing which Stadium test will follow. The map itself offers different kinds of spaces rather than a single straightforward route. Some areas may reward open movement; others make navigation more involved.

That mix is intentional, according to director Masahiro Sakurai. Discussing the design in an April 17, 2026 development article, he described balancing the map’s size, the strength and frequency of power-ups, attack frequency, and the proportions of surface, underground, and building areas for matches of up to 16 players. He said, “In City Trial, I think it’s important to change the game state and scenery through graphics and progression.” He also noted, “Some areas are extremely wide and flat, while others are more complicated.”

  • Charge, boost, and spin to attack your rivals in this vehicle action game featuring Kirby and crew
  • Use the Boost Charge button to brake and control your turns as your machine fights for top speed
  • Fill up your Boost Charge Gauge and then release to trigger an explosive dash
  • Choose from a variety of riders like Kirby and Meta Knight, each with their own stats and Specials
  • Zip around Skyah in City Trial: a free-for-all battle for 16 players online or 8 players via local wireless

That design context explains why City Trial does not promise a stable routine, but it does not settle whether the result works for any particular player. One commenter in a Reddit discussion of the online demo wrote, “City trial felt too chaotic and crazy for me,” and another described the underground area as confusing. Those are individual reactions, not evidence of a wider consensus. The available sources do not establish how common either enjoyment or frustration is.

What kind of player is likely to enjoy the uncertainty?

City Trial may suit players who enjoy adapting more than executing a fixed plan. A useful upgrade can change priorities; a rival can make a route risky; and a Stadium event can make one kind of preparation more valuable than another. The uncertainty creates room for surprising reversals, but it also means that careful preparation cannot guarantee the final result.

If you prefer a clear objective from the start, the full Trial may feel less readable than a focused race or challenge. The key distinction is not simply randomness versus skill: players still make choices about where to go, what to collect, whether to engage rivals, and which machine to use. But the mode puts those choices inside a changing situation, then asks for a different kind of performance at the end.

Nintendo’s August 2025 overview reports Sakurai calling City Trial “the main event.” That is Nintendo’s account of his description during the Direct presentation, not a claim that every player will regard it as the game’s best mode.

Which City Trial format should you choose?

Nintendo Support lists three ways to approach the mode. The best fit depends on whether you want the whole arc, a narrower challenge, or room to explore; the available format descriptions do not establish that any one option will make the experience less confusing.

Format What it offers Useful when
Trial The full City Trial sequence, from city preparation to Stadium contest. You want the mode’s complete mix of exploration, disruption, and a final test.
Stadium Specific Stadium contests without the full preparation phase. You want to focus on a particular contest type.
Free Run Free exploration. You want to explore without entering the full Trial sequence.

These options and the online formats are listed in Nintendo Support’s multiplayer instructions. The page says online City Trial supports up to 16 players; Quick Match can be a free-for-all or two teams of eight. Sakurai’s account of balancing City Trial likewise discusses matches with up to 16 players.

How does City Trial fit into Kirby Air Riders?

Kirby Air Riders is for Nintendo Switch 2 and released on November 20, 2025, according to Nintendo’s August 2025 overview. The game follows Kirby Air Ride; that overview specifies a European release of the original on Nintendo GameCube in 2004.

City Trial’s appeal is not that it removes uncertainty, but that it turns uncertainty into the structure of the match. Its brief upgrade window gives players choices, its interruptions can overturn a plan, and its Stadium finish changes the question from “What can I build?” to “What does this contest demand?” Whether that feels exhilarating or disorienting depends on how much unpredictability a player wants from a game mode.
