Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, answer three questions:
- Which game or program shows the error?
- Does it happen when launching Grand Chase, Elsword, or an older copied game folder?
- Is the affected installation a 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows?
kncfirewall.dll is an obscure game DLL associated publicly with Grand Chase and Elsword. It belongs beside the game’s own files, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The safest repair is to restore the complete game installation through its official launcher or Steam file verification. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into a Windows system folder.

You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because kncfirewall.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting kncfirewall.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading kncfirewall.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kncfirewall.dll was not found.”
- “kncfirewall.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not prove that the DLL itself is the only missing component. The file may be absent, quarantined, damaged, from the wrong game build, or present while one of its dependencies is missing.

The name suggests a networking or security-related game module, but there is no verified public documentation confirming its exact purpose. It should not be treated as a Windows Firewall file.
Fix 1: Repair the game installation
This is the most likely fix for Grand Chase, Elsword, and other legacy clients.
Use the game launcher
- Close the game.
- Close its launcher completely, including any launcher icon in the notification area.
- Open the official launcher from the game’s installation folder or Start menu.
- Look for an option named Repair, Scan, Check files, Verify, or Recover.
- Start the repair and allow it to finish.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the game from the repaired launcher.
A successful repair normally restores the missing file to the game’s own directory and allows the game to start. If the launcher reports that files cannot be repaired, remove modified files, disable active game injectors or overlays, and run the repair again.

A game normally searches its own executable directory and related data directories first. Global copying can create version conflicts and can expose Windows to DLL hijacking.
Verify files through Steam
For a Steam installation:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to complete.
- Launch the game from Steam.
If Steam reacquires the file, test the game before making any other Windows changes. If the same error returns immediately, security software may be deleting the restored file, or the installation may contain files from a different client or server build.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Older game networking or protection modules can be quarantined even when the filename alone does not establish malware. Check Windows Security before downloading anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning the game folder or
kncfirewall.dll. - Expand the event and review its location and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if the game came from a legitimate, trusted installation source and the file is in the expected game directory.

If the file was restored but disappears again, do not repeatedly whitelist it without checking the installation. Run a full scan, then reinstall the game from its official source. A filename match is not proof that an unexpected copy is safe.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete game
A clean reinstall is preferable when repair cannot restore the file, the game folder was copied from another computer, or several files are missing.
- Back up saved games or configuration files if the game stores them separately.
- Uninstall the affected game from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only the remaining folder for that specific game if the uninstaller left one behind.
- Download or install the game again from its official launcher or legitimate distribution source.
- Allow the installation to finish completely.
- Start the game before restoring custom files, patches, mods, or private-server components.
Grand Chase and Elsword are the strongest publicly documented associations for this filename, but older clients and modified distributions may contain different file sets. A private-server or archived client should be restored from that client’s original trusted distribution. Do not substitute a DLL from another game or another release.
Public file listings show that different builds may contain different copies of this DLL. File size alone cannot identify the correct version, so replacing it with a similarly named download is not a reliable repair.

Fix 4: Confirm the shortcut and working folder
A repaired installation can still fail if Windows starts a different copy.
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Select Open File Location.
- Confirm that the executable and its related DLLs are in the same intended installation.
- Start the executable from that folder once.
- If it works there but not from the shortcut, recreate the shortcut or correct its target.
Also check whether a compatibility wrapper, launcher parameter, mod loader, or copied executable is pointing to an incomplete folder.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit game. That does not mean the game DLL belongs in SysWOW64, and it does not make Windows responsible for supplying the file. Keep the DLL with the game that installed it.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found kncfirewall.dll but could not load another library it requires.

Do not guess at individual runtime DLLs or download them separately.
If the game documentation identifies a required Microsoft runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft. If no prerequisite is documented, a complete reinstall is more reliable than assembling dependencies one at a time.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
Because kncfirewall.dll is associated with a game rather than established as a Windows system DLL, DISM and SFC are secondary checks. Use them when Windows itself also shows damaged components, failed updates, broken system applications, or other corruption symptoms.
Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and run:

Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the game again. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends running DISM before SFC.
These commands repair protected Windows components. They are not a normal source for a third-party game DLL. If SFC reports repaired files but the game still displays the same error, return to the game launcher repair or reinstall.

Fix 7: Update drivers only for a wider graphics or launch problem
A driver update is not a direct replacement for kncfirewall.dll. Consider it only if the game also crashes with graphics errors, DirectX failures, display problems, or device errors.

To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also visit the graphics hardware manufacturer’s official support page and install the driver matching the device and Windows edition. Do not remove a working driver solely because this DLL is missing.

Do not run:
regsvr32 kncfirewall.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no public evidence that this game DLL requires COM registration.
Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation. A registration error does not repair a missing game file, and successful registration would not fix a damaged or mismatched game installation.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone DLL download can be:
- The wrong build for your game.
- The wrong architecture.
- Modified or malicious.
- Missing dependencies.
- Incompatible with a private-server or archived client.
- A temporary replacement that leaves the damaged installation unresolved.
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable or standalone official publisher download for kncfirewall.dll. Obtain it through the official game launcher, Steam’s verification process, or a clean installation of the legitimate client that needs it.
If the error remains
Work through this final checklist:
- Confirm which executable displays the error.
- Verify that the shortcut points to the repaired installation.
- Run the launcher repair or Steam verification again.
- Check Windows Security Protection History for repeated quarantine events.
- Remove mixed files, unofficial patches, and copied DLLs from the game directory.
- Reinstall the complete matching game client.
- Check whether another dependency is named in the event log or launcher output.

There is no evidence that it is a standard Windows component. Public game file inventories place it in Grand Chase and Elsword directories.
