There is no universal combat-robot weight-class chart: each competition sets its own limits, weapon rules, and safety checks. NHRL’s 2026 open rules list 3 lb, 12 lb, and 30 lb classes; SPARC’s 2023 Standard Ruleset v1.4 lists a wider range. If you’re choosing a first build, pick an event and read its current rulebook before settling on a weight, weapon, or material.
What are the different combat-robot weight classes?
It depends on the organizer. A class name is not a promise that every tournament offers that division, and a listed weight may be affected by rules for locomotion or multibots.
NHRL: three open classes in its 2026 rules
National Havoc Robot League’s 2026 open rules list 3 lb, 12 lb, and 30 lb classes. Its competition-basics page describes the same set. These are NHRL’s divisions, not a universal schedule.
SPARC: a wider range in its 2023 ruleset
SPARC Standard Ruleset v1.4, dated October 8, 2023, includes the following examples. Treat this as the scope of that document, not as confirmation that every class is offered at current events.

SPARC’s table includes additional weight allowances for some locomotion types, including rolling shufflers and non-wheeled designs. The allowance is not an automatic bonus for a robot that merely resembles that type: check the applicable event rules and any design or approval conditions. The document’s footnotes say its 242.5 lb class was used exclusively for Robot Wars and its 250 lb class exclusively for BattleBots at the time it was published.
What kinds of weapons do combat robots use?
Common design families include spinning kinetic weapons, lifters and flippers, hammers or pounders, clamps and grabbers, and control-oriented wedges. These are descriptive categories, not a complete official taxonomy; the organizer’s definitions determine what is legal and what counts as an active weapon.
Spinners
A spinning weapon stores energy in a rotating part and uses contact to affect an opponent. Weapon limits vary by ruleset. In SPARC v1.4’s sportsman class, most devices rotating more than 360 degrees are limited to a tip speed of 20 ft/s. That is a SPARC provision, not a general limit for all competitions.

Lifters, flippers, hammers, and clamps
SPARC’s sportsman rules give lifters, hammers, clamps, and spinning weapons as examples of active weapons. The rules also say a fixed spike that depends on the robot’s movement does not qualify as an active weapon in that class. A design’s category alone therefore does not settle its legality or judging status.
Wedges and control designs
In the same SPARC sportsman section, active wedges are allowed without restriction under that section, while a robot is limited to one passive wedge. Other standard rules still apply, and event officials may impose further limits on weapons they judge excessively destructive. Check the full rules rather than assuming a wedge or control-focused design is exempt from weapon requirements.
Why “active weapon” can matter
NHRL’s 2026 Rules and Judging Criteria Q&A connects active-weapon legality to meaningful use during a fight: “This doesn’t require weapons to be capable of destruction, but it does require intentional, effective use of the active weapon that makes the robot legal at NHRL.” The Q&A frames the weapon’s use as something that should affect the opponent’s state, not merely appear on the robot.

How do weight allowances differ from a class limit?
A nominal class sets the baseline; a rules-defined allowance may let a qualifying robot weigh more. SPARC v1.4 describes allowances for some locomotion categories. NHRL’s 2026 rules also contain specific locomotion and multibot bonus systems, with approval and design conditions. These are organizer-specific exceptions, so use the exact rule text to calculate your legal weigh-in weight.
What safety requirements should a builder expect?
Safety is part of the design and inspection process. NHRL’s 2026 rules require a weapon lock for weapon and weapon-like systems, an accessible power cutoff that removes power from drive and weapon systems, and a radio-control failsafe test. After signal loss or transmitter shutdown, NHRL specifies that drive must stop within 30 seconds and weapons within 60 seconds. These timings and requirements apply to NHRL; other events may set different standards.
NHRL also specifies battery and workshop practices: lithium-chemistry batteries must be charged using balance leads and attended while charging; appropriate protective equipment is required when using power tools; and weapon and drive testing must take place in a test box. Consult the event’s own rulebook and inspection checklist before building or testing.

Can a beginner start with a plastic combat robot?
Potentially, if the event offers a compatible plastic class. SPARC v1.4 describes plastic classes as an entry point and lists PET, PETG, ABS, PLA, and PLA+ for chassis and weapons in those classes. Non-plastic parts such as motors, electronics, axles, fasteners, and adhesives are allowed, but the rules restrict using them to enhance structure, armor, or a weapon. Confirm both that your target event runs the class and that it follows compatible material rules.
How should you compare events before designing a robot?
Use the organizer’s current rules and event page to check the details that shape the build:
- Class and weigh-in: Which divisions are actually offered, what is the weight cap, and when is the robot weighed?
- Allowances: Are there bonuses for walkers, shufflers, or multibots? What design criteria or approval apply?
- Weapons: How does the event define an active weapon? Are there limits on spinning weapons, wedges, or destructive systems, or a pre-approval process?
- Inspection and safety: What weapon locks, cutoffs, failsafe tests, battery procedures, and test-box rules are required?
- Beginner access: Does the organizer offer instruction or a beginner class, how does registration work, and can demand affect entry?
NHRL’s rules and SPARC’s v1.4 specifications illustrate why a class name or weapon allowance cannot safely be carried from one tournament to another. For BattleBots, consult its latest official rules directly; the sources cited here do not establish its current class or weapon requirements.

NHRL’s compete page promotes the Havoc Academy Crash Course for first-robot builders, with instruction described as covering fundamentals through tips from NHRL champions. It also links to a Combat Robot Design Handbook hosted by Repeat Robotics. Check those pages for current enrollment and resource availability.
NHRL says competitor selection may be by lottery because of high demand. Its compete page describes a reservation application for people traveling a long distance or able to attend few events. Read the current registration terms before making travel plans.
