PHYSINT is not Metal Gear Solid 6. It is Kojima Productions’ new original action-espionage IP, now being published through an expanded partnership with Xbox. Hideo Kojima has promised “plenty of new ideas” and “a different kind of spy action,” making the project a spiritual successor in genre and authorship rather than an official sequel.
What PHYSINT is—and what it is not
Kojima Productions first announced PHYSINT on January 31, 2024, with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The studio described it as a “brand-new action-espionage game.” Kojima said preparations had begun, but production would start in earnest after Death Stranding 2. The announcement also promised cutting-edge technology, a stellar cast and graphics intended to blur the line between film and games.

That announcement established a new intellectual property, not a continuation of Konami’s Metal Gear universe. PHYSINT has no announced Metal Gear characters, canon or title rights. Calling it Metal Gear Solid 6 would therefore misstate its status.

Why a safe Metal Gear formula would undermine PHYSINT
Kojima’s earlier work made action-espionage synonymous with stealth systems, elaborate briefings, political intrigue and cinematic presentation. PHYSINT inherits that broad territory, but its reason for existing is to give him room outside the established formula.

In a Koji10 Q&A quoted by GamesRadar in October 2026, Kojima said: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action. It’s quite different.” That is the clearest creative brief available. It does not confirm specific mechanics, but it signals that simply reproducing familiar alert states, codec-style exposition or legacy characters would defeat the purpose of the new IP.
The implication is editorial rather than a confirmed feature list: PHYSINT can rethink how stealth works, how missions are structured, how much control the player has over spycraft and how live-action-style scenes fit around play. A new name gives Kojima permission to change those foundations instead of protecting a decades-old canon.

The Sony-to-Xbox partnership change
The business context has changed since the original announcement. On September 10, 2026, Kojima Productions said, “Today, we are excited to confirm that our journey with PHYSINT continues with Asha and the team at XBOX.” The studio said Xbox shares its creative vision and that development is continuing.

Those statements confirm a new publishing partner; they do not explain what happened to the original Sony collaboration or establish that Sony cancelled the project. No official announcement supplies a cancellation reason, a settlement or an exclusivity clause.
Cast and development status
On September 17, 2026, Kojima Productions confirmed Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT’s lead. The announced cast also includes Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. The studio calls PHYSINT its third original IP and says Kojima views it as the culmination of his 40-year career.

GamesRadar reported in October 2026 that the story had been written but the script was not finished at the time of that report. That is a dated development snapshot, not a promise about the project’s final state. Xbox has said more information will be shared as development progresses.

Because the project remains in development, claims about a firm Xbox exclusivity arrangement, a PlayStation release, budget, cancellation causes or launch window are speculation unless and until the companies announce them.

What you can play while waiting
Konami’s METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is the immediate option for players who want Kojima-associated espionage today. It returns to Naked Snake’s Cold War mission while intentionally recreating the 2004 game’s story and design. The game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam on August 27, 2025.
Konami lists platform-specific bonus modes and said the FOX HUNT online mode would be added later in fall 2025. That makes Delta a known, available remake—not evidence of what PHYSINT’s systems will be.
