Konami began in Osaka as a jukebox retail and repair business in 1969. It moved into arcade-machine manufacturing in 1973, then expanded into PC, MSX and console games. Today, its businesses also include arcade and casino systems, trading cards, and sports operations. The company’s own timeline makes that progression clear; the label “pioneers” is best treated as a framing phrase, not proof that Konami invented a particular genre or platform.

When was Konami founded?

Kagemasa Kozuki started the business on March 21, 1969, in Toyonaka City, Osaka, Japan. Its initial work was selling and repairing jukeboxes. Konami’s corporate history distinguishes that founding from a later corporate milestone: Konami Industries Co., Ltd. was established on March 19, 1973. The company describes 1973 as the beginning of its arcade amusement-machine manufacturing. Konami’s corporate history and its basic company information document the two dates and activities.

That distinction matters: 1969 marks the origin of Kozuki’s business, while 1973 marks the establishment of Konami Industries and its shift into making arcade machines.

What did Konami make first?

Konami’s first business was jukebox retail and repair, not video-game development. Arcade amusement machines came later, after Konami Industries was established in 1973. The company’s official history records exports to the United States in 1979, followed by game-business expansion across several platforms:

What games is Konami known for?

Konami’s present U.S. catalog includes long-running series and newer game offerings such as Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania, Contra, eFootball and Yu-Gi-Oh!. The list illustrates the range of its catalog, rather than serving as a complete history of every release. Its official games catalog is the source for these current examples.

Castlevania

Konami’s announcement dated September 25, 2026, says Castlevania debuted in 1986 and marks the series’ 40th anniversary. It also announced anniversary merchandise and a concert planned for spring 2027 in London, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Those event and product details are time-sensitive; check the anniversary announcement for current availability and scheduling.

Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Contra

These are among the recognizable series in Konami’s current catalog. Their presence demonstrates the breadth of the company’s game portfolio, but the catalog alone does not establish a claim about who pioneered a genre or how one developer influenced another.

What does Konami do besides video games?

Konami describes four principal business areas: Digital Entertainment, Arcade Game, Gaming & Systems, and Sports. They serve different customers and involve different kinds of products and services—not simply different labels for game publishing. The company outlines these areas on its principal businesses page.

Gaming & Systems Gaming machines and casino management systems Equipment and systems for gaming venues, rather than consumer game publishing.
Sports Fitness and sports classes and sports-related products In-person activities and related products, not a video-game platform.

Konami’s president and group CEO, Kimihiko Higashio, describes the company’s approach as an effort “to create new forms of fun by globally providing innovative products and services that capture the era’s crest of the wave.” That is the company’s own characterization of its aims, not an independent assessment of its historical influence. Higashio’s president’s message gives the full context.

How to understand the “pioneers of play” description

Konami’s history shows a business repeatedly moving into new formats: jukeboxes, arcade machines, PC games, MSX games, and console games, alongside its present-day range of digital entertainment, cards, gaming systems and sports. That record supports describing the company as an early and adaptable participant in several areas of entertainment. It does not, by itself, prove that Konami invented a genre, technology or business model, or establish the extent of its influence on other developers. Those stronger historical claims require independent evidence beyond the company’s own corporate timeline.
