In the Danish legal context, contract law concerns how agreements are formed and interpreted, when they may be invalid, and what can follow if a party breaks one. The word alone does not identify a particular contract or legal dispute.
What does “kontrakt” mean?
Lex.dk describes a contract as an agreement, collective agreement, or one or more promises that set a framework for the conduct of two or more parties. The term comes from Latin contractus, from contrahere, meaning to bring together or agree. Lex.dk’s overview of kontrakt was last changed on June 4, 2015.
In the legal sense described by Lex.dk, an agreement is characterized by being capable, in some form, of enforcement through the courts. That general description does not determine whether a particular arrangement is enforceable: the circumstances and applicable rules matter.
What questions does contract law cover in Denmark?
Lex.dk identifies several central questions in Danish contract law. They are related, but each asks something different:

- Interpretation: What do the parties’ words and promises mean?
- Validity: Is there a reason the agreement should not be treated as valid?
- Breach: Did a party fail to do what the agreement required?
- Remedies: What response may be available if an agreement was breached?
These are broad categories, not a checklist that resolves any individual case. A short general overview cannot establish the outcome of a dispute.
What does Denmark’s Contracts Act of 1917 cover?
Lex.dk identifies Denmark’s Contracts Act of 1917 as containing rules on the formation and invalidity of agreements. It also notes that separate rules apply to particular kinds of agreements, especially in the consumer sphere. The statute reference is not a complete account of current Danish law or a guide to how any specific provision applies.
For a real dispute, the type of agreement and the facts are important. Consumer arrangements may be subject to rules beyond the general overview, so the word “kontrakt” by itself is not enough to identify the governing law or likely result.

No. Without context, “kontrakt” may refer to the general legal term or to another work or subject using the same title. Here, it means the Danish legal term. Lex.dk’s overview is an introductory explanation, not legal advice or a complete statement of current Danish law.
