The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is still in development, according to Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits in March 2026. There is no confirmed release date. The remake was announced for PS5 and PC, but the available announcements have not provided a new gameplay showcase or a detailed account of how the original RPG’s mechanics will change.
Is the KOTOR remake still in development?
Yes. In March 2026, Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits told IGN: “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say.” GamesRadar+ reported the statement from his interview. It confirms the project was still being developed at that time, but gives no further details about progress or plans.

The remake was announced in September 2021 by Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Aspyr lead producer Ryan Treadwell described it as a ground-up rebuild using modern technology, features, and visuals while maintaining the original story and characters. The announcement said development was at an early stage. Those were the team’s stated goals at announcement, not a guarantee of the final design. Read the original PlayStation announcement.
Who is developing it?
The project was announced under Aspyr. GamesRadar later reported that Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly identified Mad Head Games as handling the remake in deposition testimony. That is a reported attribution from legal testimony, rather than a new public announcement from the development team. GamesRadar+ has the report.

When does the KOTOR remake come out?
No release date or confirmed release window has been announced in the sources available here. In July 2026, Saber chief business officer Steve Allison wrote that the remake was “hopefully” part of the company’s 2028 lineup. PC Gamer reported that a Saber representative confirmed the message was genuine, but clarified that it was not an official statement of release targets. Treat 2028 as speculation, not a scheduled launch. PC Gamer explains the caveat.
What platforms will the remake be on?
The official remake announcement lists PS5 and PC. The PlayStation announcement described PS5 as a console exclusive “at launch”; it did not specify how long that exclusivity would last. StarWars.com also lists PS5 and PC. No Xbox platform or separate PC release date is established by those materials. See the official StarWars.com game page.

- This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
What is confirmed about the remake’s story and gameplay?
The announced aim is to rebuild the original RPG for a new generation while preserving its story and characters. The announcement does not provide a detailed remake feature list, and no remake combat footage or specific gameplay systems are established by the available sources. It is therefore too soon to say which original mechanics will return or how they may be redesigned.
What the original KOTOR is about
Lucasfilm describes the original game as taking place about 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire. Its player-directed story follows a Force-user whose choices shape events involving the Jedi and Sith. The original includes more than 40 Force powers, lightsaber construction, nine customizable party characters, and travel across seven worlds aboard the Ebon Hawk. These are facts about the original game, not confirmed features of the remake. Lucasfilm’s original-game page provides the premise and feature details.

Is Fate of the Old Republic the KOTOR remake?
No. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a separate single-player action RPG from Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Announced in December 2025, it tells an all-new story and is not a direct sequel or continuation of the original KOTOR. Casey Hudson, director of the original KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy, is leading the project. It is not the remake. Lucasfilm’s announcement distinguishes the game and its story.
