Calgary’s franchise began in Atlanta and moved to Calgary for the 1980–81 season; Seattle joined the NHL in 2021–22. In a January 5, 2026 season-to-date snapshot, Calgary had the stronger five-on-five shot and high-danger chance shares, while Seattle had the better power play. Those figures describe that point in 2025–26—not the teams’ current form.
How the Flames and Kraken franchises began
Calgary’s franchise started in Atlanta
The Flames franchise began as the Atlanta Flames before relocating to Calgary for the 1980–81 season. The team’s history in Calgary is therefore much longer than Seattle’s NHL history, though the franchise’s origins predate its arrival in Alberta. NHL.com’s Flames history documents the move.
Seattle joined the NHL in 2021–22
Seattle was awarded an NHL franchise in December 2018, adopted the Kraken name in July 2020, and began play in the 2021–22 season. The naming announcement said the process considered 1,200 names and drew 215,000 fan votes; those figures describe that naming process, not the scale of current support. The Kraken’s official name announcement covers the launch.
Is Kraken vs. Flames a rivalry?
They are divisional opponents, and their matchup is a growing Western Conference contest. But their shared NHL history is brief: Seattle has only played in the league since 2021–22. The available records do not establish a storied rivalry, a playoff rivalry, or a measured level of animosity between the fan bases.

What the head-to-head record shows
Calgary’s official game notes listed the all-time series as 11-4-0-2 before the scheduled April 11, 2026 meeting in Seattle. This is a dated pregame record, not the final series figure after that game. The notes listed the first two 2025–26 meetings as a Calgary 4–2 win on December 18, 2025, and a Seattle 5–1 win on January 5, 2026. Calgary’s April 11 game notes give the pregame series record and schedule.
How their playing styles compared in January 2026
Calgary’s January 5, 2026 preview reported season-to-date team statistics for the 2025–26 season. Calgary led the two five-on-five possession-related measures shown, while Seattle had the stronger power-play rate; Calgary’s penalty kill was also higher. The five-on-five measures were attributed by Calgary to NaturalStatTrick. These are one dated snapshot, not permanent descriptions of either team.
| Measure | Calgary Flames | Seattle Kraken | What the snapshot indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five-on-five shot-attempt share | 51.49% (11th) | 46.02% (29th) | Calgary had the higher share of shot attempts. |
| Five-on-five high-danger chance share | 49.80% (18th) | 41.27% (32nd) | Calgary had the higher share of high-danger chances. |
| Power play | 14.6% (32nd) | 21.1% (12th) | Seattle had the higher conversion rate. |
| Penalty kill | 81.1% (14th) | 70.3% (32nd) | Calgary had the higher kill rate. |
Percentages and league ranks above are the season-to-date figures Calgary reported on January 5, 2026; they are not final 2025–26 statistics. The Flames’ January 5 preview provides the snapshot and attributes the five-on-five measures to NaturalStatTrick.
How to read the five-on-five measures
Shot-attempt share compares a team’s attempts with its opponent’s at five-on-five; a higher share means it accounted for more of the attempts in that situation. High-danger chance share applies the same share concept to chances classified as high danger. Calgary led both in the reported snapshot, but neither measure alone tells you the final score, and the figures do not prove a permanent tactical identity.

Special teams told a different story
Seattle’s power-play rate was higher in the January snapshot, while Calgary’s penalty-kill rate was higher. That contrast matters because a matchup is not captured by five-on-five play alone: special teams can create a separate edge. The data here support comparing those rates at that date, not assuming they will hold in another season.

Calgary’s December 18, 2025 preview gave different 2025–26 season-to-date rates: Calgary’s power play was 13.8% and penalty kill 83.5%, while Seattle’s were 19.4% and 67.8%. Calgary’s five-on-five shot-attempt shares were 52.19% to Seattle’s 47.62%, and high-danger chance shares were 51.56% to 42.60%. Calgary attributed the five-on-five measures to NaturalStatTrick. The changes by January demonstrate why these rates should be tied to their reporting dates rather than presented as timeless team traits. The December 18 preview contains that earlier snapshot.
