“ktransfer.dll is missing” or “The file ktransfer.dll was not found” means Windows cannot load a library required by an older application. The ktransfer.dll error usually belongs to the legacy P2P (kTransfer) program, not to Windows itself.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error names an old program: repair or reinstall that program first.
- The program disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- You found
ktransfer.dllin a download folder: do not copy it intoSystem32; identify the application that needs it. - The file exists beside the program but still fails: reinstall the complete application and investigate a missing dependency.
- Several Windows components are failing: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate this third-party DLL.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup, or removal: consider System Restore.
- No legitimate parent application can be identified: scan the computer and do not restore the DLL.
What ktransfer.dll is
Public file inventories associate ktransfer.dll with P2P (kTransfer) and describe it internally as “Przesylanie plików,” meaning file transfer. Those records list Piotr Pawluczuk and Rafał Lindemann as the developers.

The available information comes from third-party DLL records rather than a current publisher download page or authenticated installer. The product’s current availability, support status, exact build, digital signature, and trusted download location are not established. Treat the identification as a useful lead, not as proof that every copy of the file belongs to the same release.

It should normally sit in the original application’s installation folder, alongside the executable that loads it.
#1 Best Overall
The strongest available file record describes it as a Win32 DLL, which indicates a 32-bit application component. A conflicting inventory labels it x64, so the architecture should be verified from the original application or installer rather than assumed from a download page.
Fix 1: Identify the application that needs the DLL
Do this before downloading or copying anything.
Read the complete error
Look for the executable name in the message. It may say that a particular program cannot start, or it may show a path such as:
C:Program Files (x86)SomeOldAppprogram.exe
The executable named in the error is more useful than the DLL name alone. Do not assume that every copy of ktransfer.dll belongs to the same software.
Inspect the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that starts the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
If the shortcut points to an old installation folder, that is the application you should repair or reinstall.
Search installed programs
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the program name shown by the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Look for Advanced options, Modify, Change, or Uninstall.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for the application.
- Select it and check whether Modify, Repair, or Uninstall is available.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and inspect older desktop applications there.
Check old installation folders
Look in the folder named by the shortcut or error. Common locations include:
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
C:Users<your-name>AppDataLocal
C:Users<your-name>AppDataRoaming
Do not treat the presence of a randomly downloaded DLL as proof of ownership. Look for the complete application: its executable, configuration files, help files, and uninstaller.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 2: Repair the original application
Repair is preferable to replacing a single DLL because it can restore the correct collection of program files and preserve application data.
For a packaged Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Microsoft documents this process in its app and program repair guidance.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair usually means the application opens without the missing-DLL message. If the same error remains, continue with a full reinstall.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software may quarantine or remove an application DLL. This is especially relevant when the program worked previously and stopped immediately after a security scan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the application folder or
ktransfer.dll. - Open an entry to see its detected path and action.
Microsoft explains the risks of allowing quarantined files in its Protection history guidance.
Do not choose Allow on device merely because the filename matches the error. First confirm all of the following:
- The file was located inside the legitimate application directory.
- The parent application is known and expected.
- The installer came from a trustworthy source.
- The file has not appeared unexpectedly in a temporary or download folder.
- A security scan does not identify the application as unsafe.
If the file was quarantined from an obsolete application and its authenticity cannot be established, reinstall the complete application instead of restoring the isolated DLL.
Fix 4: Reinstall the original P2P application
If repair is unavailable or ineffective, reinstall the parent program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve application data
Before uninstalling, check the application folder and user profile for saved files, exports, configuration files, or account data. Copy only personal data to a separate backup location. Do not back up unknown executable files and later restore them indiscriminately.
Uninstall the damaged copy
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the identified application.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the program’s removal wizard.
- Restart Windows if requested.
If the program does not appear there, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select it, and choose Uninstall.
Install from a trustworthy source
Use the original installer supplied by the publisher, an installer retained by your organization, or a reputable archive that can establish the program’s provenance. No current official P2P (kTransfer) download or support page is established here, so do not invent a publisher URL or substitute a loose DLL from a search result.
After reinstalling:
- Start the program from its new shortcut.
- Confirm that
ktransfer.dllis in the application’s own folder if the program installs it. - Restore personal data only after the application starts normally.
- Run a security scan if the old installation was unexpectedly modified or deleted.
Reinstalling the original program remains the definitive repair when this DLL is genuinely part of that program.
Fix 5: Check architecture and secondary dependencies
A 32-bit application normally requires the correct 32-bit build of its own DLL. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit applications, so seeing Program Files (x86) is not itself an error.
Rank #3
Do not attempt to fix architecture problems by copying files between:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite the names, those folders are managed Windows locations with special redirection behavior. A DLL from one application, build, or architecture may load incorrectly or create a different failure.
If ktransfer.dll is present beside the executable but Windows reports:
Error loading ktransfer.dll. The specified module could not be found.
the missing item may be a dependency required by ktransfer.dll, not the DLL itself. Reinstall the complete application first. Only install a Visual C++ redistributable if the application’s documentation or dependency analysis specifically identifies it. Microsoft explains that the required package depends on how the application was built in its Visual C++ Redistributable guidance.
Do not reinstall DirectX, .NET, or every Visual C++ package as a generic response. There is no established connection between those runtimes and this particular file.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for Windows-wide corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are appropriate when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in utilities, repeated system-file errors, or update failures. They are not expected to recreate an obsolete third-party application DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
Repeating these commands will not replace a vendor DLL that was removed from an application directory. If the commands report that they repaired Windows files but the same application error remains, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the original P2P application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the program worked recently and the failure began after a cleanup, update, or security event.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
System Restore does not replace a personal backup, and it may not restore an application’s complete installation. If the program still reports the missing DLL afterward, reinstall the application.
Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 unless the DLL is an ActiveX or COM component
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore missing files or repair ordinary application libraries.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For this file, running:
regsvr32 ktransfer.dll
will generally be irrelevant and may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. It usually means the library was not designed for self-registration. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 reference.
Fix 9: Treat driver updates as a low-priority check
ktransfer.dll is reported as an application DLL, not a graphics, audio, storage, or network driver component. Updating drivers is therefore not a first-line fix.
If the application also crashes with broader graphics, audio, or device errors:

Use the computer or device manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not expect Device Manager to restore ktransfer.dll.
When checking many devices manually means hunting through versions and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; the free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns ktransfer.dll.
Why loose DLL downloads are a poor fix
Downloading ktransfer.dll from a random DLL site can introduce:
Best Value
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong application build
- The wrong architecture
- A missing dependent library
- Version conflicts with the original program
- A misleading temporary improvement
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 is especially unsafe because it changes a shared Windows directory and may affect unrelated software. Copying a 32-bit file into SysWOW64 is not a valid repair either.
The safe source is the complete original application installer from the publisher or a trustworthy, verifiable archive. If no legitimate installer can be found and the parent application is obsolete, removing the application may be safer than forcing an unauthenticated DLL into Windows.
If reinstalling still does not work
Record these details before seeking further help:
- The complete error message
- The executable named by the error
- The executable’s full path
- The location of any existing
ktransfer.dll - Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether antivirus history shows a removal
- The result of the application reinstall
- Any message naming another missing module
A dependency-analysis utility can show whether the DLL itself is present but requires another library. Use it on the original application installation, not on an isolated download. If no legitimate parent program can be identified, scan the computer, remove suspicious software, and do not restore the file.
FAQ
Is ktransfer.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence indicates that it is. Public records associate it with the third-party P2P (kTransfer) application.
Which program installs ktransfer.dll?
Available records identify P2P (kTransfer), developed by Piotr Pawluczuk and Rafał Lindemann. The current availability of that product and an official installer is not established.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I copy it into System32?
No. The file normally belongs in the original application’s directory. Copying it into a Windows system folder can create conflicts and security risks.
Is ktransfer.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The strongest available record describes it as a Win32 DLL, but public listings conflict. Use the original installer or application files to verify the correct build.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not as the first step. Reinstall the parent application first. Install a Visual C++ redistributable only when the application or dependency analysis identifies it as required.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually no. An ordinary application library does not become usable by registering it. The correct repair is to restore the complete application installation.
Can SFC restore ktransfer.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not a missing DLL from a third-party application.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the executable that needs the file, repair that application, and reinstall it from a trustworthy complete installer if repair fails. Check antivirus history before restoring anything manually.
