The safest fix for a langinfounicode.dll error is to identify the parent program and repair or reinstall that exact product instead of downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
langinfounicode.dll is a third-party ABBYY application library. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, driver, or general-purpose file that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32.

ABBYY documentation lists this library among the mandatory modules used by FineReader Engine distributions and the FineReader Server COM API. FineReader Engine packages can contain separate 32-bit and 64-bit files in Bin and Bin64 directories. The exact filename-to-folder arrangement can vary by distribution build, so do not assume that every copy of the file belongs in the same directory.

Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| The error names an ABBYY executable | The ABBYY installation is incomplete or damaged | Repair or reinstall that ABBYY product |
ConfigureOCRServer3.exe reports the file is missing |
The Recognition Server installation path may have changed | Restore the expected path or reinstall the matching release |
| The file exists, but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency of the DLL may be missing | Repair the required Visual C++ runtime and the ABBYY installation |
| The problem began after an update or failed uninstall | Files from different releases may be mixed | Remove the damaged installation and install one compatible release |
| The error appeared after antivirus action | The file may have been quarantined | Check Protection history and verify the parent installation |
| A 32-bit application fails on 64-bit Windows | The required 32-bit ABBYY component or runtime may be absent | Install the matching 32-bit product components and x86 runtime |
| The error started after cloning or restoring a disk | Files, registry paths, licensing data, or services may no longer match | Repair the product using its original distribution |
| A game or unrelated application shows the message | It may bundle ABBYY technology, but the filename does not prove that | Repair or verify that specific application rather than Windows |
Fix 1: Identify the parent ABBYY product
Before replacing anything, find out which program is asking for the file.
- Read the title bar of the error window. Note the executable name, such as
FineReader.exe, an OCR service, orConfigureOCRServer3.exe. - Right-click the affected program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and inspect Target.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Look for an ABBYY directory, an application-specific
Binfolder, or aBin64folder. - If the program runs as a service, press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Look for an ABBYY or OCR-related service. - If the software is supplied by another company, check that company’s installation directory and documentation. It may be an OEM application embedding ABBYY technology.
Do not use the filename to guess the replacement. Confirm whether the file should sit beside the failing executable, inside an ABBYY runtime folder, or inside a vendor-specific application directory.
Also consider what changed immediately before the error:
Recommended Free Tools
- an ABBYY update or failed uninstall
- a changed installation directory
- one Recognition Server or FineReader Server release installed over another
- antivirus quarantine
- a restored or cloned disk
- replacement of a 32-bit component with a 64-bit component
Fix 2: Repair the ABBYY application
For an end-user ABBYY application, repair is the first practical fix.
On supported FineReader installations:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the installed ABBYY FineReader product.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the wizard and provide the original installation media if requested.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the ABBYY program again.
If the product does not offer Repair, open Settings with Win + I, select Apps, choose Installed apps or Apps & features, select the ABBYY product, and look for Modify, Repair, or Uninstall.
A repair worked if the original program starts without the DLL message and its services or OCR functions operate normally. If repair fails, do not copy a replacement file into a Windows folder. Continue with a clean reinstall.
Some editions support Windows Installer repair from an elevated Command Prompt:

msiexec /f {Product Code}
The product code must belong to the installed ABBYY edition and architecture. Do not reuse a code found for another FineReader release.
Fix 3: Reinstall from the original ABBYY package
A reinstall is appropriate when repair cannot restore the file, the installation directory was changed, or multiple ABBYY releases have been layered together.
Before uninstalling:
- Record the product edition and release.
- Preserve license files, activation details, and any configuration needed by your organization.
- Export or back up OCR profiles and custom settings if the product supports them.
- Confirm that you have the original installer or a licensed distribution package.
Then:
- Open Apps > Installed apps in Windows Settings.
- Select the affected ABBYY product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Install the same release from the original ABBYY installer or the software vendor’s licensed package.
- Use the required installation path.
- Match the package to the application’s architecture.
- Restore licensing and configuration only according to the product documentation.
- Start the application and test the operation that previously failed.
For FineReader Engine deployments, use the complete runtime distribution rather than extracting one DLL. ABBYY’s 64-bit runtime packages use installRnt64.exe, and a deployment may also install licensing services and other required modules. A complete package is important because the library can depend on neighboring ABBYY files, licensing folders, permissions, services, and registration settings.
For Recognition Server, do not install an older release over a newer one. ABBYY documents a missing-file error after the default installation folder was changed, and its release notes warn against installing Recognition Server 3.0 over 3.5. Restore the expected directory or reinstall the correct release.
Fix 4: Check architecture and Visual C++ dependencies
A 32-bit program needs its 32-bit ABBYY components even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit program needs the matching 64-bit distribution. Do not substitute a file from another architecture or another ABBYY release.
If the file is present but the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency rather than langinfounicode.dll itself.
Check the ABBYY installation for a VC_Redist folder. Some FineReader packages include:

vcredist_x86.exevcredist_x64.exe
Install the architecture required by the failing application. Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ packages are available from the official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
After installing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the ABBYY application.
- If the same message remains, run the ABBYY repair process.
- If the file is present but still will not load, reinstall the complete matching ABBYY runtime.
Installing Visual C++ does not provide langinfounicode.dll; it only addresses a possible dependency.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file, especially after an update or a change to the installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the ABBYY installation directory.
- Confirm that the detected item belongs to the legitimate ABBYY installation.
- Scan the installer and the computer before restoring anything.
- Restore the file only when you trust the source and the parent installation.
- Repair or reinstall ABBYY if the file is restored but the program still fails.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for an entire drive or Windows directory. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, obtain a clean installer from ABBYY or the software vendor and investigate the installation for tampering.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Windows component corruption is less likely because this is an application file, but repairing Windows is reasonable when several unrelated programs have started failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the ABBYY program again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official SFC and DISM instructions explain the possible results.
SFC and DISM will not recreate a missing ABBYY library. If they report that Windows is healthy and the ABBYY error remains, return to the product repair or reinstall.

If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, failed application change, or system modification, System Restore may return the previous working configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Press Win + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and programs, but normally does not remove personal documents. If no suitable restore point exists, repair or reinstall the ABBYY product instead.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the timing supports it
A display, storage, or security driver is not the normal source of langinfounicode.dll, but a driver change can expose damaged application files or interfere with disk access.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the error began after that update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test ABBYY.
Do not randomly update every device. Hunting through many driver versions can obscure the actual ABBYY installation problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with installation handled by the full version, but driver software is optional and does not replace reinstalling the program that owns this DLL.
Do not use regsvr32 on this file
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 langinfounicode.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. ABBYY’s Engine instructions apply registration to particular components, not to langinfounicode.dll. Registering this library is unlikely to restore a missing dependency and can produce another misleading error.

Why DLL download sites are the wrong fix
Downloading this file from a random DLL site can give you:
- the wrong ABBYY release
- the wrong architecture
- a damaged or modified file
- missing dependent files
- a file that does not match the application’s signature or licensing setup
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also make unrelated applications load the wrong library. There is no universal standalone replacement specification for this file. The safe source is the original ABBYY installer, FineReader Engine distribution, FineReader Server package, Recognition Server media, or the licensed vendor package for software that embeds ABBYY OCR.
FAQ
Is langinfounicode.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an ABBYY application library. There is no reason to expect Windows to provide it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Where should the file be located?
It should be in the directory supplied by the ABBYY product or the application that embeds ABBYY technology. Depending on the distribution, this may be beside the program or within an ABBYY Bin or Bin64 directory.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It may mean that a dependency of langinfounicode.dll is missing even when the DLL itself is present. Check the matching Visual C++ runtime and repair the complete ABBYY installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Only if both computers have the same product, release, architecture, and complete deployment, and the file comes from a trusted licensed installation. In practice, repairing or reinstalling the parent product is safer.
Do I need to register the DLL?
Normally no. Do not use regsvr32 unless the ABBYY product’s own instructions specifically require it for that component.
What if this is an OEM application?
Repair or reinstall the OEM application that displays the error. Its installer may contain a customized ABBYY runtime, and copying a file from FineReader or another ABBYY product may create a version mismatch.
What should developers check?
Verify the complete FineReader Engine distribution, Bin and Bin64 layout, licensing data, registry paths, %ProgramData%ABBYY, service permissions, Visual C++ dependencies, and the application’s bitness. A single copied DLL is not a complete SDK deployment.
