They live in lakes, ponds, reservoirs, swamps, and river backwaters, where plants and woody cover offer places to ambush prey. Their diet changes as they grow, and males guard eggs and newly hatched fish in nests. Spawning season depends on local water temperature and geography, while fishing rules depend on the jurisdiction and waterbody.
How to identify a largemouth bass
The most useful field mark is the mouth: the upper jaw reaches beyond the rear edge of the eye. Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources also describes a dark stripe along the side and a two-part dorsal fin. Spotted bass can look similar, but their upper jaw does not extend beyond the eye, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.
Federal and state species profiles commonly use the scientific name Micropterus salmoides. A USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species profile retrieved under Micropterus nigricans also describes largemouth bass. Because those sources differ, the discrepancy should not be treated as proof of a settled taxonomic change.
Where largemouth bass live
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes the species’ North American range from the St. Lawrence, Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi basin through Atlantic drainages from North Carolina to Florida and into northern Mexico. This native range is distinct from the many places where bass have been introduced, often for sport fishing.

- Unique Trembly Sinking – Trembles All the Way Down. After each jigging hop, the Shadtale doesn't just drop – it trembles. This high‑frequency vibration during the fall mimics a stunned or injured baitfish, drawing reaction bites even from pressured bass, trout, crappie, and walleye
- Vibrating Swim Action – Steady Retrieve, Solid Vibration. Reel it in at a constant speed, and the paddle tail produces a powerful, tight vibrating swim. The lifelike shad profile and tail kick send out water displacement that predator fish can't resist – perfect for covering water
- BKK Premium Hooks – Ready to Fish. Equipped with sharp, corrosion‑resistant BKK hooks straight from the factory. No need to upgrade – these hooks penetrate deep and hold firm, giving you confidence on every hookset
- Multi‑Lure Pack – Multiple Colors, Better Value, Any Water Condition. Each pack contains multiple Shadtale lures in a variety of colors. Dark colors for murky/low‑light water, light colors for clear/bright conditions – you'll always have the right color for the moment. More lures, less cost per bait, and great for family fishing trips
Largemouth bass inhabit lakes, ponds, swamps, reservoirs, and river or creek backwaters. They often use submerged plants, logs, roots, and other cover: these areas can provide adults with ambush sites and young fish with refuge. Suitable spawning habitat includes shallow areas with firm sand, mud, or gravel bottoms; dissolved oxygen is also an important habitat condition.
Habitat varies by region. For example, Minnesota’s DNR describes the fish there as common in shallow, fertile lakes and river backwaters with aquatic vegetation; that local profile is not a universal description of every largemouth bass habitat.

What largemouth bass eat
Young largemouth bass feed first on zooplankton and aquatic insects, then increasingly on crayfish and small fish as they grow. Adults commonly eat fish and crayfish, and may also take frogs and other available prey. Their diet is opportunistic: what an individual eats depends on its size, the waterbody, and which prey is available.
When and how largemouth bass spawn
Spawning is generally associated with spring warming, but neither the calendar nor the temperature is the same everywhere. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service gives a broad spawning range of 59–75°F. Texas Parks and Wildlife says spawning in Texas begins around 60°F and can occur from February through May depending on location. Minnesota’s DNR gives a local example of May–June spawning once water reaches about 60°F.

- 【High Quality】 — The frog lures features high-quality components and a super soft hollow body. The hook is made of high-quality stainless steel, which can ensure that even large fish cannot escape. When being bitten, the soft plastic body squished down easily and expose the sharp hooks to pierce right on fish.
- 【Weedless Design】 — The weedless design means it glides in and out of thick cover easily and driving fishes crazy to come out of water to strike.
The male clears a shallow nest depression. After a female deposits eggs, the male guards the eggs and newly hatched fry. Published egg-count figures also differ by source and scope: Minnesota DNR gives 2,000–6,000 eggs for its profile, while Texas Parks and Wildlife reports 2,000 to 43,000. Neither range should be assumed to describe every fish or location.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service lists 16 inches as a common length. Its profile also reports a longest recorded specimen of 38.2 inches, a heaviest reported weight of 22 pounds, and a maximum reported age of 23 years. Those are reported extremes, not typical sizes, weights, or lifespans. The agency calls largemouth bass “one of the top recreational fish species in the United States” and notes that they have been widely stocked for recreational fishing.

Lures and basic tackle
Common artificial baits include spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, plugs, surface lures, and spoons; plastic worms and live bait are also used. These are options, not a tested ranking of what works best. The choice of presentation depends in part on whether fish are near vegetation, other cover, or open water. Minnesota DNR’s general rod advice is to look for a strong butt and sensitive tip, and to balance the rod and reel together.
Check local fishing rules
Bag limits, size limits, and exceptions can vary by jurisdiction and even by waterbody. Texas Parks and Wildlife, for example, publishes statewide limits alongside lake-specific exceptions. Check the current rules from the relevant fish and wildlife agency for the place you plan to fish; there is no single safe-to-assume limit for all waters.
