Larian CEO Swen Vincke said in December 2025 that the studio used generative-AI tools for exploration and reference work, including concept-art-related tasks. After the comments drew criticism, he clarified that Larian’s artists made the original concept art. In a January 2026 Reddit AMA, he said the studio would stop using generative-AI tools during concept-art development, while writing director Adam Smith said generated text would not be used for Divinity writing. Larian said it would continue experimenting with AI in other departments.
What sparked the backlash?
In a December 2025 Bloomberg interview, Vincke discussed generative-AI tools in Larian’s development workflow. Contemporary coverage described uses that included exploring ideas, preparing presentations, placeholder text and concept-art-related work. The concept-art reference raised concerns that AI might replace artists or contribute generated art to Divinity. GameSpot reported on the response, while Game Developer covered Vincke’s comments about AI tools.
Vincke pushed back against the idea that Larian was trying to replace concept artists. He described AI output as rough material for reference exploration and early ideation, which the studio’s artists replaced with original concept art. “The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do,” he said.
In that December response, Vincke said Larian had 72 artists, including 23 concept artists, and was hiring more. Those are figures he gave in 2025, not independently audited numbers or a current headcount.

What did Larian clarify in January 2026?
In a January 2026 Reddit AMA, Vincke drew a clearer boundary around concept art. As PCGamesN reported, he said: “First off – there is not going to be any gen-AI art in Divinity.” He added that, “to ensure there is no room for doubt,” Larian had decided to refrain from using generative-AI tools during concept-art development.
Smith addressed writing separately. He said generative text would not be used for Divinity dialogue, journal entries or other writing. That statement concerns generated text in the game’s writing; it does not amount to a claim that Larian had stopped testing every AI-related tool elsewhere.

What the statements mean for Divinity
| Date and statement | Task or output | What Larian said |
|---|---|---|
| December 2025 interview and response | Reference exploration and early ideation | Vincke described AI-assisted exploration; he said artists made the original concept art. |
| January 2026 AMA | Concept-art development | Vincke said Larian would refrain from generative-AI tools during this stage. |
| January 2026 AMA | Dialogue, journal entries and other writing | Smith said text generation would not be used for Divinity writing. |
| January 2026 AMA coverage | Other departments and workflows | Larian remained interested in testing generative AI across departments; the reports do not describe a blanket ban. |
The distinction is between using tools during internal exploration and putting generated art or text into the game. Vincke said that if Larian used generative AI to create in-game assets, it would do so only when confident about training-data provenance and creator consent, and that a model used for those assets would be trained on data Larian owns. This is the studio’s stated condition, not independent verification that every data or consent issue has been resolved.
Windows Central’s account of the AMA likewise distinguishes the decision on concept art from Larian’s continued experimentation with tools across departments. The statements are attributed to Larian staff; the cited coverage does not independently audit the studio’s tools, datasets or workflows, nor establish measured effects on productivity or staffing.

Did Larian stop using AI after the backlash?
No blanket end to AI use was announced. The January clarification narrowed the policy for Divinity: no generative-AI tools in concept-art development and no generated writing, while experimentation in other departmental workflows could continue. The studio also described provenance, consent and Larian-owned training data as conditions for any generated assets used in-game.
