For a phone-based YouTube stream that should continue while you use other apps, Android is the practical choice: Larix Broadcaster supports background streaming by default until you explicitly close it, while PRISM Live Studio requires the Android “Allow display over other apps” permission. On iOS, neither app’s documentation supports background camera video. If “always-on” means unattended 24/7 continuity, neither app’s documentation establishes that a phone can reliably deliver it.
For a genuinely unattended pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos while your computer is off. It is not a phone-camera encoder.
What “always-on” means changes the answer
There are two different requirements behind an always-on channel. A stream that keeps going while you switch apps is a background-streaming question. A stream that runs unattended day and night is a reliability and hosting question. The apps document some background behavior, but that is not an uptime guarantee for a particular phone, network or 24/7 session.
- Need to keep streaming while using other Android apps? Either app may suit, with the relevant background setting enabled for PRISM.
- Need background camera video on an iPhone? Neither app is documented as supporting it.
- Need an unattended 24/7 YouTube channel? Do not assume a phone app will provide dependable continuous operation; consider a cloud host for pre-recorded video.
Larix vs PRISM at a glance
| Decision point | Larix Broadcaster | PRISM Live Studio |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube support | YouTube lists Larix as an approved mobile encoder. Softvelum documents RTMP publishing and other protocols. | YouTube lists PRISM as a mobile encoder. PRISM documents platform-account and custom RTMP setup. |
| Android background video | Available by default until you explicitly close the app. | Requires enabling “Allow display over other apps.” |
| iOS background video | Background mode cannot access the camera or encoder; audio-only background capture is possible. | Background live broadcasting is unsupported. |
| Long-session limit | Free RTMP/SRT streaming permits 30 minutes, then another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay, after which the stream stops. Premium removes this streaming time limit. | A comparable general continuous-stream cap is not established by the consulted official guide and FAQ; that is not proof of unlimited streaming. |
| Production approach | Encoder-oriented, with RTMP, SRT and other protocol options, overlays and pause/standby modes. Some advanced capabilities are paid. | Mobile production tools include overlays, source composition, chroma key and screen modes. Source limits vary by OS and mode. |
Both are capable of sending a mobile stream to YouTube, but compatibility alone does not establish continuous uptime. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists both apps (YouTube Help: live encoder settings and supported encoders).

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which app fits your channel?
Choose Larix on Android for encoder flexibility
Larix is the more natural fit if you want an encoder-first workflow, need protocol options, or want background streaming without enabling PRISM’s overlay permission. Its free RTMP/SRT duration is limited: after the initial 30 minutes and a further 30 minutes with a required overlay, the stream stops. Softvelum says Premium removes that time limit, but this only removes the app’s stated cap; it does not promise that the phone can run unattended indefinitely.
Choose PRISM on Android for an integrated mobile production
PRISM may suit a gaming or IRL-style show built around scenes, overlays and multiple sources. To continue broadcasting while using other apps, enable Allow display over other apps in Android settings for PRISM. Keep a persistent scene lean: PRISM’s guide gives different source limits by operating system and mode and recommends minimizing sources to support stability.

Do not rely on either for background camera video on iOS
PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting. Larix says its iOS background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, although audio-only background capture is possible. That audio behavior does not make it suitable for a camera-based video stream with the app backgrounded. Check the current app version’s documentation if your workflow depends on a specific iOS release.
Set up either app for YouTube
Larix: connect with YouTube RTMP details
- Get the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live-stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, screen recordings or public instructions.
- Enter the connection details in Larix. Softvelum explains that the full connection URL is made by combining the server/application address with the stream key. Follow its current RTMP setup instructions rather than guessing at the URL format: Larix RTMP publishing documentation.
- Start with a short test. Confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound before relying on the setup for a longer session. A successful test confirms connectivity, not 24/7 endurance.
PRISM: use a platform account or custom RTMP
- Follow PRISM’s YouTube setup guide for your device. It provides separate Android and iOS walkthroughs: PRISM Live Studio YouTube guide.
- Connect a YouTube account or enter custom RTMP details if your workflow calls for it. PRISM’s FAQ describes both platform-account connection and custom RTMP server/key entry: PRISM Live Studio FAQ.
- On Android, enable the background permission if needed. Allow PRISM to display over other apps, then test that the broadcast continues when PRISM is no longer in the foreground.
- Use only the sources the scene needs. Extra layers can add load; PRISM’s guide recommends minimizing sources for stability. Keep a persistent scene simpler than a one-off production.
For either app, check that the phone remains powered, cool and connected to a stable network during the session. Background capability does not establish that a specific handset can encode continuously for your intended duration, and no device-specific endurance guarantee is documented here.

End the broadcast cleanly
PRISM’s FAQ cautions that the app may continue transmitting according to the platform’s RTMP policy even when the viewing platform appears to have ended the broadcast. Use PRISM’s End control to stop transmission safely rather than relying only on what the YouTube viewing page displays.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream stops after about an hour in free Larix: The documented free RTMP/SRT sequence is 30 minutes plus another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay, then stop. Check the current Larix plan details if you need longer sessions; Premium removes that app time limit, not phone or network failure risk. Larix Premium details.
- PRISM stops when you switch apps on Android: Confirm the app has Android’s “Allow display over other apps” permission, then test again. Exact settings navigation can vary by Android manufacturer and version.
- The broadcast does not continue after switching apps on iOS: This is an app/OS limitation for background video described by both vendors, not a missing Android-style permission.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the selected account or custom RTMP server and stream key match the current YouTube live setup. If using Larix, verify the server/application address and key are combined as its instructions require.
- The stream becomes unstable with a complex PRISM scene: Reduce the number of sources and retest with only essential layers, following PRISM’s stability guidance.
- The YouTube page looks ended but PRISM may still be sending: End the broadcast inside PRISM with its End control.
- You need proof a phone can last a full day: Neither app documentation establishes that. Test your actual handset, power arrangement, network and scene for the full intended duration before depending on it.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Using an encoder or cloud host does not grant rights to the video, music or other material in the stream. Only broadcast content you own or are licensed to use, and check YouTube’s current policies before building a repeating channel around third-party material. A stream staying live is not evidence that its content complies with copyright rules or qualifies for monetization.
