On iOS, the vendor says background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, so only audio remains available. Neither the app documentation nor the other reviewed sources establishes guaranteed 24/7 operation or a fixed runtime.
How Larix behaves when the screen is locked or the app is in the background
Softvelum’s FAQ distinguishes putting the app in the background from explicitly closing it. Its answer says: “On Android it’s available by default feature. Your app will work in background until you close it explicitly.” That is the vendor’s documented behavior, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation on every phone.
Android
Android is the plausible choice for unattended camera streaming with Larix. According to Softvelum, background streaming is available by default and continues until the app is explicitly closed. Locking the screen or switching to another app is not the same as closing Larix, but actual behavior can still vary with the phone, power conditions, network, and app execution.
iPhone and iPad
Softvelum says that in iOS background mode the camera and encoder are not accessible; only audio remains available. Do not rely on Larix to keep sending camera video after it goes into the background on iOS.

Set up Larix to stream to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the Live server URL and stream key shown for the selected stream. Enter the values YouTube provides for your stream; do not assume a sample key or a single ingest URL will apply to every setup. Softvelum’s Larix documentation describes configuring the app in video-plus-audio mode and choosing an appropriate bitrate, but the available guidance here does not establish one universal bitrate for every resolution, network, or stream.
- Prepare the phone. For a fixed camera view, use a stable mount such as a phone tripod mount. This is a practical choice, not a Larix requirement. Restream recommends starting with a fully charged phone and using dedicated Wi-Fi for best mobile-streaming performance. YouTube lists an external microphone among typical streaming hardware; use one if the phone’s built-in audio is not suitable.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Open Live Control Room and create or select the YouTube stream you intend to send to. YouTube’s encoder setup provides the stream’s Live server URL and stream key.
- Configure Larix. In Larix, set the connection using the URL and key supplied by YouTube, and configure video-plus-audio mode. Choose a bitrate appropriate for the video and the network available at the phone’s location; the reviewed documentation does not support a one-size-fits-all numeric setting.
- Start the encoder stream and verify it in YouTube. Confirm that the expected video and audio reach YouTube before leaving the phone unattended. Keep Larix running in the background rather than explicitly closing it if you are using Android.
- Check the unattended setup under real conditions. Confirm the camera framing, audio, power arrangement, and network where the phone will remain. A successful initial connection does not establish that the phone or network will sustain a long session.
What affects reliability during a long session
Power, heat, and the phone’s operating system
A phone streaming continuously must remain powered and able to keep the app executing. The reviewed sources do not quantify phone-specific thermal limits, battery behavior, background-management settings, or maximum Larix runtimes. Treat those as device-specific factors to check rather than assuming one phone’s behavior applies to another.

Network quality and protocol
Softvelum says deteriorating network conditions can cause frame loss with RTMP and RTSP. Its FAQ says SRT attempts to compensate within its configured latency period; that is a bounded recovery behavior, not a replacement for a stable connection. YouTube’s encoder setup uses the server URL and key it provides. Do not assume SRT is available in every YouTube ingest workflow; check the options shown for your stream.
Android features and plan availability
The Google Play listing for Larix Broadcaster describes Android support for RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, WebRTC/WHIP, NDI HX2, RTSP, and RIST, along with H.264 and H.265/HEVC, overlays, MP4 recording, and multiple destinations including YouTube Live. The listing, updated August 11, 2026, identifies auto-start and adaptive bitrate as Premium features. These are Android listing claims; do not assume iOS feature parity or that plan terms and regional availability remain unchanged.

Common problems and what to check
- Video stops after leaving Larix: On Android, check whether the app was explicitly closed. Softvelum identifies explicit closure as the condition that ends its documented background behavior. On iOS, the vendor says background mode cannot access the camera or encoder.
- Video loses frames or becomes unstable: Check the connection at the phone’s location. Softvelum warns that deteriorating network conditions can cause frame loss for RTMP/RTSP. SRT’s compensation is limited by its configured latency period, where that protocol is available.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck that Larix has the Live server URL and stream key supplied for the selected YouTube stream. Use the values shown in Live Control Room rather than a sample or assumed endpoint.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: Verify that Larix is configured for video-plus-audio and that the selected audio source works. YouTube lists an external microphone as typical streaming hardware when the phone’s built-in audio is not adequate.
- The session fails later despite a successful start: Check power, Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity, and whether the app remains open and executing. The reviewed sources do not establish a guaranteed runtime or uninterrupted service on a particular phone.
