Ulfrid (Brian), Marlena and Arthur are the practical S-tier core for October 2026. Arthur is the strongest tank in Pocket Gamer’s version 1.0.63 ranking, Marlena is the high-damage Warrior carry, and Ulfrid (Brian) is a Warlock tank. Use Bella or Grenwald when Arthur or Marlena is unavailable. Premium UR heroes Shadow and Cynthia are a separate spending decision, not automatic proof that they are the best choice for every squad.
Last Asylum: Plague is a mobile survival strategy game released in March 2026 and attributed to 37Games by GamsGo. Pocket Gamer’s Jack Brassell describes the objective plainly: “It’s up to you to rebuild your town and cure its inhabitants in Last Asylum: Plague.” The hero decision matters because your five-person squad must survive while dealing enough damage for its mode, and upgrade materials are limited.

Arthur: anchor the frontline
Start with Arthur when you need the most dependable tank listed by Pocket Gamer. His value is not just rarity; it is the amount of time he can keep the rest of the formation functioning. Put him in the position that receives the most incoming pressure, then invest in the survivability upgrades that your current mode requires.

Marlena: fund the win condition
Marlena is the recommended Warrior carry when you need a reliable source of damage. Give her the best damage-oriented upgrades you can sustain without leaving the frontline unable to survive. A carry that dies early contributes less than a slightly weaker one protected long enough to finish the fight.
Ulfrid (Brian): add a second durable role
Ulfrid (Brian) is identified as a Warlock tank, making him a useful partner for a formation that needs more resilience rather than another fragile damage dealer. His inclusion lets the team spread incoming pressure and preserve Marlena’s time on target.

When Arthur or Marlena is missing
Use Bella as the practical Arthur substitute and Grenwald as the practical Marlena substitute. Treat these as availability solutions, not a universal claim that either replacement outperforms the S-tier hero in every game mode.

- Role fit: cover the tank, carry and support needs of the formation instead of stacking one role.
- Damage and survivability: compare how much damage a hero contributes while alive, not a paper damage number alone.
- Shields, healing and debuffs: defensive and control utility can protect a carry or extend a fight.
- Synergy: judge whether a hero improves the other four members’ uptime and output.
- Target mode: a campaign stage, event, boss or player-versus-player fight can reward different tools.
- Rarity and shard access: rarity affects availability, but it is not a tier by itself.
- Upgrade cost: a hero you can consistently promote may beat a nominally stronger hero stranded at a low level.
For a normal progression squad, begin with Arthur, Marlena and Ulfrid (Brian), then fill the remaining two slots with heroes that supply the missing utility for your stage. If Arthur is unavailable, Bella can occupy the frontline role; if Marlena is unavailable, Grenwald can take the damage slot. Do not replace a functioning, well-upgraded team solely because a lower-level hero has a higher rarity.
Free-to-play access to UR heroes
Shadow and Cynthia require purchase for the acquisition route described by Pocket Gamer, so they sit outside that publication’s standard tier ranking. That monetization status does not by itself establish their combat value, and a paid hero is not automatically the correct fifth member for your account.

Pocket Gamer’s best-team guide, updated October 5, 2026 for version 1.0.65, says free-to-play players can obtain UR shards through the Alliance Shop, quests and events. Plan around those sources rather than assuming every UR requires a direct purchase. Track the shard path, the time needed to complete it and the upgrade materials required before committing scarce resources.
When a purchase is worth considering
- Buy only if the hero fills a role your current roster cannot cover.
- Check whether you can raise the hero far enough to matter; an underdeveloped premium unit can lose to an upgraded substitute.
- Compare the immediate squad improvement with the long-term shard and material cost of your free-to-play options.
- Keep spending decisions separate from tier labels: the ranking and the acquisition method answer different questions.
Why different lists disagree
Last Asylum: Plague’s available evidence measures different things. The standalone wiki list ranks heroes by maximum Might, while its squad page models five-hero teams over a 30-second reference fight using survivability and damage per second. “Strongest hero on paper” therefore is not the same as “best squad from the heroes I own.”

The wiki reports Shadow at 1,075,906 maximum Might, at the opening of Tier S. That figure was checked August 31, 2026 on version 1.0.87. The same squad-model page says it ranks 169,911 possible five-hero squads. Those numbers describe the wiki’s chosen metrics and model; they are not a replacement for testing your formation in the mode you actually play.
Patch and freshness notes
Use the version beside each placement when making a decision. Pocket Gamer’s tier article is version 1.0.63, its best-team article is version 1.0.65, and the wiki’s maximum-Might data is version 1.0.87 checked August 31, 2026. Skill tuning, shard availability and squad performance can change between patches, so recheck the in-game descriptions after an update before spending reset items or premium currency.
Article updated October 17, 2026. For the current evidence, invest first in the Arthur–Marlena–Ulfrid (Brian) core, substitute Bella or Grenwald when roster access demands it, and judge every additional hero by role, synergy, mode and upgrade path rather than rarity alone.
