1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo shatter unwanted equipment in Last Epoch, use a Rune of Shattering on it in the Forge. The item is destroyed, and you receive a random number of affix shards. Use a Rune of Removal instead when you want shards from one affix: it removes one random affix and returns shards equal to that affix’s tier.
How to shatter an item
- Open the Forge and place the expendable item in it.
- Apply a Rune of Shattering to the item.
- The item is destroyed, and the recovered affix shards go automatically to Material Storage.
Shattering can return shards for the item’s affixes. For each affix, the quantity is random: from one shard up to that affix’s tier. The official description does not publish odds or an average yield, so the maximum is not guaranteed. See the official Runes and Glyphs guide and Affix Shards guide.
When to shatter—and when to use Removal
Choose Shattering when you no longer need the item and want a chance to recover shards from multiple affixes. Choose Removal when you want a tier-matched shard return from one affix and are willing to let the rune decide which affix is removed. Removal targets one random affix; it does not let you select a specific one.
| Rune | What you sacrifice | Affix selection | Shard return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rune of Shattering | The whole item | No selection; shards can come from its affixes | Random amount per affix, from one shard up to that affix’s tier |
| Rune of Removal | One affix | One random affix is removed | Shards equal to the removed affix’s tier |
What affix shards are for
Affix shards are crafting materials: use them to add an affix or raise an existing affix by one tier. Crafted affixes can reach tier 5. Tier 6 and tier 7 affixes must already be on dropped items; crafting does not create them. Equipment can have up to two prefixes and two suffixes. Details are in the official Items & Loot guide and Affixes guide.

A quick decision check
- Item is expendable: Shattering trades the entire item for uncertain shard recovery.
- You want a tier-based return from an affix: Removal returns that affix’s tier in shards, but the affix removed is random.
- You need a particular affix: Neither rune guarantees a chosen target under the official descriptions; do not use Removal expecting to pick one.
