League of Legends has a favorable critic-review record, but its headline average is largely a snapshot of the game near its 2009 launch—not a verdict on the live game in 2026. Metacritic’s PC page showed 78/100 from 37 critic reviews when accessed in 2026, while a substantial PC Gamer re-review in 2018 scored it 82/100.
What is the critic score for League of Legends?
Metacritic’s PC critic page displayed a 78/100 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” from 37 reviews: 28 positive, nine mixed and zero negative. The page is dynamic, so those figures describe what it showed when accessed in 2026, not a permanent total. Metacritic’s PC critic reviews include praise for tactical competition, accessibility, replayability and fun.

That number needs historical context. League of Legends launched for Mac and PC on October 27, 2009, and most reviews in the aggregate were written that year, according to Brenda Challender’s 2013 analysis. The Metascore therefore reflects reviews accumulated across the game’s history, with its weight concentrated around the original release; it is not a fresh review of the current live game.
How later reviews compare with the launch-era aggregate
Later reassessment gives a useful, if still dated, second perspective. On May 30, 2018, PC Gamer published Steven Strom’s re-review and scored the game 82/100. Strom described a complex game with rewarding tactical possibilities, a high skill ceiling and a steep learning curve, concluding that it remained one of the best strategic duelers despite changing in some ways over the preceding eight years. GameSpot’s listing illustrates why individual scores and their context matter. It records Tyler Hicks’s review at 9/10 (“Superb”) and Kevin VanOrd’s retail launch review at 6/10 (“Fair”). These are historical reviews, not current assessments; the difference is a reminder that critics can weigh a complex competitive game differently even around its early period. What critics praised—and what they found difficult
Tactical competition and replayability
The positive case centers on the strategic contest: players make decisions in response to opponents, and matches offer reasons to keep refining those decisions. Metacritic’s reproduced excerpts include GameShark’s 91-point review calling the game an entertaining competitive environment, and PC Gamer’s January 2010 review describing it as an accessible and rewarding descendant of DotA. These are period-specific reactions, not claims about every aspect of the game today.

Depth comes with a learning curve
PC Gamer’s 2018 re-review emphasized that the same complexity enabling strategic depth can make the game daunting to learn. It also identified friction around champion access. That criticism is best understood as the reviewer’s assessment in 2018; it does not establish current access rules or monetization terms. The review’s “Free with microtransactions” price framing likewise applies to its publication context, not verified current terms.
What kind of game did critics review?
GameSpot classifies League of Legends as a free-to-play MOBA and strategy game, with the original Mac and PC release dated October 27, 2009. In the core match described by Challender’s 2013 narrative analysis, teams fight players or bots, destroy towers and ultimately try to destroy the opposing team’s Nexus. That analysis also observes that the game’s storytelling is delivered through elements such as champion lore and dialogue rather than a conventional story-driven campaign. This is a description of the game’s core match and storytelling at the time of the analysis, not a comprehensive account of all modes or later lore.

Is the review consensus useful for deciding whether to play now?
It is useful for understanding why League of Legends became critically well regarded: reviewers valued its tactical competition and replayability, while later criticism highlighted complexity and learning friction. It is not enough, by itself, to tell you whether the current live game suits you. The aggregate is predominantly launch-era, and the later standalone review cited here is from 2018; neither provides a 2026 appraisal of current balance, modes, access terms or player experience.
When weighing a score, check four things: the date, whether it is a launch review or re-review, the scale and review count, and the critic’s focus. A 78 Metascore aggregates many older views; Strom’s 82 is one critic’s later reassessment; the GameSpot scores are individual historical reviews. The cited material supports a PC-focused view, not a current all-platform consensus.
