League of Legends Replay Files vs. Video Recordings: Which Should You Use?

Use a League replay for in-client match review while it remains available; choose a video recording when you need a clip saved outside the replay workflow.

Use a League of Legends replay when you want to review a match inside the League client; use a video recording when you need footage saved as a video for keeping or sharing elsewhere. Replays are tied to Riot’s patch-cycle availability, while Riot documents in-client Highlights saved as .webm video files.

Replay file or video: which fits your goal?

Your goal Start with Why
Review a match in the League client Replay (.rofl) It preserves the client’s replay-viewing workflow, but Riot says replay availability lasts only for a patch cycle. Riot’s Replays FAQ
Keep or share a clip outside the replay workflow Video recording Riot documents in-client Highlights in .webm format, a conventional video file. Riot’s Replays FAQ
Access a match you did not play in Do not count on downloading its replay Starting with patch 26.20, Riot limits replay access to matches you participated in and says third-party replay downloads are removed. Patch 26.20 Notes
Make a camera-directed or cinematic capture Advanced replay tools Riot documents Replay API controls, and its League Director project supports camera control and staged sequences. League Director’s repository specifies Windows. Riot Developer Portal · League Director

There is no official comparison here establishing which method produces better image quality, smaller files, or lower performance cost. Choose by workflow and access needs, not by an assumed technical advantage.

What a League replay file does

A .rofl replay is viewed through the League client rather than treated as an ordinary video. Riot’s FAQ says you can download a replay from the end-of-game screen or from Match History. After downloading, the button changes to “Watch Replay,” which launches the match in the client. Riot’s Replays FAQ

Replay availability is temporary

Riot says replays last for the length of a patch cycle and expire when the client patches. A replay is therefore useful for prompt analysis, but it should not be treated as a dependable long-term video archive. If you want to keep a moment beyond that viewing window, save a video recording while you can still access the match.

Patch 26.20 limits whose replays are accessible

Riot Games’ October 2026 Patch 26.20 Notes say that, starting with that patch, players can access replays only from matches they played in. Other players can no longer download those replays, and third-party apps and sites lose access to replay downloads. Riot says players can still download and watch their own matches directly in the League client. Read the Patch 26.20 Notes

What an in-client video recording gives you

Riot’s Replays FAQ describes an in-client recorder for Highlights. Riot identifies the saved clips as .webm files. A video file is the better fit when your aim is to keep or share footage beyond the client’s replay workflow. Riot’s Replays FAQ

When advanced replay capture makes sense

For a normal personal clip, Riot’s in-client Highlight recorder is the simpler documented route. More elaborate capture is possible for creators who want to direct the camera or build a sequence rather than record an ordinary viewpoint.

A practical choice

  1. Want to inspect a match inside League? Download your replay from the end-of-game screen or Match History, then choose “Watch Replay.” Review it before the next client patch makes it expire.
  2. Want a clip you can keep as a video? Use the client’s Highlight recording feature and locate the resulting .webm file.
  3. Want someone else’s match replay? Since patch 26.20, do not rely on a download unless you participated in that match; Riot says third-party replay downloads are no longer available.
  4. Want a directed cinematic view? Consider the Replay API or League Director, bearing in mind that League Director’s repository specifies Windows.
