The leaked Radeon RX 9070 XT results suggested near-RTX 4070 Super performance in one synthetic test—not a confirmed match for the base RTX 4070, and not proof of equivalent gaming performance.

The leaked Radeon RX 9070 XT results suggested near-RTX 4070 Super performance in one synthetic test—not a confirmed match for the base RTX 4070, and not proof of equivalent gaming performance.

The figures came from unofficial Geekbench Vulkan and OpenCL listings published in a Tom’s Hardware report on February 21, 2025, before AMD launched the card. The RX 9070 XT scored 177,395 in Vulkan and 179,178 in OpenCL. Those numbers put it close to the RTX 4070 Super in Vulkan, but several percent behind it in OpenCL. Later independent game testing showed a capable, competitive GPU whose position changed substantially with the game, resolution, and whether ray tracing was enabled.

What the leaked RX 9070 XT scores actually showed

The public listings compared the unreleased RX 9070 XT with several existing and rumored graphics cards. Here are the reported results:

Graphics card Geekbench Vulkan Geekbench OpenCL
AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT 177,395 179,178
AMD Radeon RX 9070 158,520 140,842
AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT 155,488 139,983
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super 178,982 192,378
Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 228,576 229,140

Against the RX 7800 XT, the leaked XT model was approximately 14% faster in Vulkan and 28% faster in OpenCL in these listings. Against the RTX 4070 Super, it was about 0.9% behind in Vulkan and 6.9% behind in OpenCL. The RTX 5070 Ti was roughly 22% to 29% ahead of the RX 9070 XT across the two APIs.

That is why “matched the RTX 4070” is an imprecise summary. The detailed comparison used the RTX 4070 Super as the closer named Ada-generation reference, not the standard RTX 4070. The RX 9070 XT was nearly level with the Super in Vulkan and modestly slower in OpenCL; it did not establish universal parity.

Why Geekbench results do not predict gaming frame rates

Geekbench’s Vulkan and OpenCL tests are synthetic compute workloads. They can be useful for detecting broad performance differences, but they do not reproduce the behavior of a standardized selection of PC games.

The result can be influenced by the GPU driver, compiler behavior, API implementation, workload characteristics, and the particular test entry. None of those scores directly measures:

  • Rasterized game performance at 1080p, 1440p, or 4K;
  • Ray-tracing performance;
  • Frame-time consistency and stutter;
  • Upscaling or frame-generation quality and latency;
  • Power efficiency, fan noise, or thermal behavior; or
  • Performance in a specific game engine.

The listings were also unofficial. They were useful pre-launch evidence, but they were not a finished AMD review, a controlled test suite, or an independently reproducible gaming benchmark. Additional pre-launch 3DMark figures circulated as well, including reported scores of 14,588 in Time Spy Extreme and 6,345 in Speed Way. Notebookcheck noted that those results were not final and had been preserved through secondary sources rather than a fully reproducible official test record.

RX 9070 XT specifications AMD ultimately confirmed

AMD’s official specifications provide a firmer basis for evaluating the card than the leaked benchmark entries. The desktop RX 9070 XT is an RDNA 4 graphics card with:

AMD lists a minimum 750W power supply and two 8-pin power connectors. That is a system-planning recommendation, not a guarantee that every computer needs exactly 750W. The CPU, number of drives, fans, other components, and any overclocking also affect the appropriate capacity. A quality 750W power supply for RX 9070 XT can be a sensible starting point for a conventional system, while a higher-capacity unit may be preferable for a power-hungry CPU or additional upgrade headroom.

The card supports modern high-resolution and high-refresh displays through DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b. That makes a 4K gaming monitor for RX 9070 XT a reasonable pairing for the right games, but the port specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate. The result depends on the game, graphics settings, ray tracing, upscaling, and whether frame generation is used.

What independent gaming reviews found after launch

Post-launch reviews provided the evidence the leak could not: actual game performance across a broad test suite.

TechSpot: close to the RTX 5070 Ti, but not consistently equal

In TechSpot’s 18-game test, the RX 9070 XT averaged 119 frames per second at 1440p. It was approximately 6% behind the RTX 5070 Ti in that suite. At 4K, the gap narrowed to roughly 1%.

TechSpot also measured about a 20% improvement over the RX 7900 GRE in mostly rasterized workloads. That was a meaningful generational-positioning improvement, although it was below AMD’s stated claim of a 35% raster-performance increase. The difference illustrates why launch claims and review-suite averages should not be treated as interchangeable: test selection and methodology matter.

GamersNexus: game-by-game variation was substantial

GamersNexus found that the RX 9070 XT and RTX 5070 Ti were within about 6% of one another in its selected 4K rasterized group. However, the average concealed sizable swings between individual games. The RX 9070 XT was close to the RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 4080 Super in some titles and considerably slower in others.

Ray tracing widened the uncertainty. GamersNexus recorded games where the RTX 5070 Ti led the RX 9070 XT by double-digit percentages, although the difference was smaller in some lighter ray-traced workloads. Buyers who primarily play rasterized games may see a different ranking from those who use demanding ray-tracing settings.

These reviews do not make the Geekbench leak useless. They show why it must be interpreted narrowly. The leak indicated that AMD’s new card could reach roughly RTX 4070 Super-class performance in selected synthetic APIs; it did not predict a fixed gaming ranking. Later testing found the RX 9070 XT generally competitive with the RTX 5070 Ti in rasterized gaming, with results varying by title and a less favorable picture in some ray-traced workloads.

What this means if you are considering an RX 9070 XT

For a buyer comparing the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card, the relevant decision is not whether two Geekbench numbers are close. Check the games you actually play, the resolution you intend to use, and whether ray tracing is important to you.

  • For 1440p rasterized gaming: the RX 9070 XT has the performance to target high-refresh play, but the exact result depends on the title and settings.
  • For 4K rasterized gaming: independent testing placed it close to the RTX 5070 Ti on average in some suites, making game-specific benchmarks more important than the leaked synthetic scores.
  • For ray tracing: Nvidia’s competing card can lead by double-digit percentages in demanding examples, so do not assume raster performance carries over unchanged.
  • For memory-heavy games and high resolutions: the 16GB VRAM capacity is a useful part of the card’s specification, though capacity alone does not determine performance.
  • For a new build: plan around AMD’s 304W typical board-power figure, two 8-pin connectors, and the complete system’s power demand.
  • For high-refresh displays: DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b provide suitable connectivity, but the monitor should be selected around the games and frame rates you expect rather than the connector standard alone.

Board-partner versions can differ in cooler design, factory clocks, dimensions, power limits, noise, and price. Do not assume that every RX 9070 XT has identical behavior simply because it uses the same GPU.

Launch price and availability

AMD announced a $599 suggested retail price and March 6, 2025 availability through board partners and retailers. That figure is historical launch MSRP, not a current market price. Actual pricing and stock can change by country, retailer, board design, and time of purchase, so a current listing should be checked before treating the card as a value recommendation.

Verdict: an interesting leak, not proof of an RTX 4070 gaming match

The leaked RX 9070 XT benchmarks were real public Geekbench entries reported before launch, and they showed impressive synthetic compute performance. The Vulkan result was almost level with the RTX 4070 Super, while the OpenCL result was about 7% lower. But the headline’s reference to the base RTX 4070 oversimplified the comparison, and neither test established gaming equivalence.

Independent reviews supplied the more important answer: the RX 9070 XT was a strong and sometimes near-peer competitor to the RTX 5070 Ti in rasterized gaming, especially at 4K, but its ranking varied by game and Nvidia retained meaningful advantages in some ray-tracing workloads. The correct conclusion is therefore near-parity in selected synthetic tests and competitive real-world gaming performance—not a universal match for every RTX 4070-class card or workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the RX 9070 XT really match the RTX 4070?

No. The leaked results did not prove that the RX 9070 XT matched the base RTX 4070 in games. The closest named comparison in the detailed table was the RTX 4070 Super, and the RX 9070 XT was nearly level with it only in Vulkan; it was about 7% slower in OpenCL.

Do the leaked Geekbench scores predict gaming performance?

No. Geekbench Vulkan and OpenCL are synthetic compute tests. They do not directly predict game FPS, ray-tracing performance, frame pacing, power efficiency, or performance in a particular game.

What power supply does the RX 9070 XT need?

AMD lists 304W typical board power, two 8-pin connectors, and a minimum 750W power supply. The right capacity still depends on the CPU, other components, and whether the system is overclocked.

How fast is the RX 9070 XT in actual games?

Later reviews found the RX 9070 XT broadly competitive with the RTX 5070 Ti in rasterized gaming, with results varying by title. Nvidia’s lead was more noticeable in some demanding ray-tracing workloads.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The February 2025 leak put the RX 9070 XT near the RTX 4070 Super in Geekbench Vulkan and somewhat behind it in OpenCL. That was promising but unofficial synthetic evidence, not an FPS comparison. Later reviews showed a fast, variable GPU that could approach the RTX 5070 Ti in rasterized games while falling further behind in some ray-tracing workloads.
