Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is an easy recommendation if you want to revisit Nosgoth—or experience Raziel’s story for the first time. Its sharper presentation, modern camera controls, and navigation aids make two atmospheric, puzzle-focused games easier to play today, while an unusually generous archive of extras gives longtime fans plenty to explore. The caveat is that this is a remaster, not a remake: the original combat and puzzle design remain, including stretches of repetitive fighting.
What’s included, and where can you play it?
The collection bundles Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, following Raziel, a former lieutenant of vampire ruler Kain. Betrayed and executed, Raziel returns as a wraith to seek revenge. Exploration, environmental puzzles, combat, and travel between material and spectral realms shape both adventures.
Steam lists the release date as December 10, 2024, and identifies Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics as developers, with Aspyr as publisher. Aspyr announced PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 editions; Nintendo Life reviewed the North American Nintendo Switch version, also listing a December 10, 2024 release. How much does the remaster improve the games?
Aspyr says the project began with the original engine and a complete set of assets, with the goal of preserving the games’ combat, puzzles, boss fights, balance, and overall feel. You can switch between original and remastered graphics during play, making the visual changes easy to compare.
The updated presentation includes refreshed textures, interface and visual effects, upgraded character and enemy models, real-time shadows, and new skyboxes that let you look upward. Aspyr also restored a day-and-night cycle that was cut from the original Soul Reaver release. These are meaningful upgrades to how the games look, not a redesign of how they play.
The most practical improvements address camera control and navigation. The first Soul Reaver gains modern analog controls and right-stick camera movement, including vertical adjustment. A newly created map of Nosgoth, a compass, and optional hints help with finding objectives. Remappable controls are also available, and the collection includes a photo mode.

What still feels dated?
Combat is the main friction point. Both games retain their original design, and ordinary encounters can feel repetitive rather than rewarding. Nintendo Life also found the lock-on combat clunky enough to require adjustment. Better camera handling makes the games more comfortable, but it does not turn their fights into a modern action system.
The puzzle-and-exploration structure is likewise intact. That preservation is part of the appeal if you want the original adventures, but the map and hints are useful because navigation remains a substantial part of play. Players looking for a remake with redesigned encounters or a thoroughly modernized pace should set expectations accordingly.
Review impressions vary by tested platform. TechRadar reported a solid 60fps in its PS5 review and praised the improved controls, while criticizing repetitive combat and calling the photo mode basic. Nintendo Life praised the Switch presentation and remappable controls but noted minor visual bugs and clunky lock-on combat. These are observations about the versions those outlets reviewed, not a guarantee about every platform or subsequent patch. TechRadar also noted limited accessibility options; it reports subtitles, adjustable stick sensitivity, optional vibration, and optional maps, compass, and gameplay hints.

Are the bonus materials worth your time?
The bonus menu is a substantial part of the package, especially for fans interested in how the games were made. It brings together reference material, artwork, video, scripts, and music rather than limiting the extras to a small gallery.
- Maps and lore: maps and descriptions that add context to Nosgoth.
- Art and renders: classic and newly created artwork and character renders.
- Video and production material: cinematics, credits, demo videos, and outtakes.
- Scripts and music: scripts for both games and extended soundtracks.
- Lost Levels: four playable areas cut from the original Soul Reaver: Undercity, Smokestack, Retreat, and Forges.
The Lost Levels are best approached as interactive archival curiosities, not a substantial new campaign. Aspyr describes them as historical artifacts that may contain missing textures or unfinished sections. The Forges material offers a glimpse of an original plan for six elemental Reaver enhancements: fire, sunlight, water, stone, sound, and spirit.
Matthew Ray, associate brand manager at Aspyr, described the release as “not just a remaster” but “also a reminder of the collaboration between Crystal Dynamics, Aspyr, and the Legacy of Kain community” in the PlayStation Blog announcement.
Should you play Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered?
Play it if the draw is Raziel’s dark fantasy story, Nosgoth’s atmosphere, and the pleasure of working through environmental puzzles. Returning players get a more comfortable way to revisit the games, with visual comparisons and archival material to deepen the trip. Newcomers get both adventures in one collection, plus camera and navigation improvements that soften some old friction.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBe more cautious if you expect combat to have been rebuilt or want the rhythm of a contemporary action game. Reviewers’ platform-specific reservations—including minor Switch visual bugs and a rudimentary PS5 photo mode—are worth weighing if those details matter to you. Nintendo Life awarded the collection 8/10, praising the presentation, controls, extras, and value of having both games together while listing visual bugs and lock-on combat among its drawbacks.
