Build the champion who best solves your next progression bottleneck—not automatically the Legendary. Plarium describes Legendaries as having the highest base stats and standout abilities, but also says they are not always superior to less-rare Champions. A well-chosen Epic may be the more useful first investment when its skills fill a gap in your roster and you can develop it with the resources you have.
Start with the content you need to clear
Before comparing rarity, name the obstacle you want to overcome: a Campaign stage, a dungeon, Clan Boss, Arena, or another mode. Then ask which champion contributes the job your team is missing. The better first build is the one that helps with that immediate target, not the one with the more prestigious frame.
Compare each candidate’s actual skills with your current team. A champion that brings a needed effect or role may add more than one whose strengths duplicate what your roster already does. This is a roster-specific judgment, not a universal Epic-versus-Legendary ranking; Plarium warns that rarity alone does not establish which Champion is superior. Plarium’s Champions page describes Legendary Champions as powerful while noting that less-rare Champions can be better.
Compare the investment each champion needs
Choosing someone to build means committing more than a champion slot. Rank-ups require same-rank Champions or Chickens, and a Champion returns to Level 1 after ranking up. Plarium’s Tavern guide lists the level caps as Rank 1: 10, Rank 2: 20, Rank 3: 30, Rank 4: 40, Rank 5: 50, and Rank 6: 60. Weigh the food and leveling time against what the champion will contribute to your target content.

Skill books are a limited resource
Skill upgrades can improve cooldowns, damage, or the chance of an effect, but the Tavern guide calls skill tomes hard to come by and advises against spending them on Champions you do not intend to invest in. Check whether the candidate’s key skills need upgrades to do the job you want. A champion who only becomes useful after a book investment you cannot afford may be a weaker immediate choice than one who already fits your needs.
Gear is part of the comparison
Champion rarity does not determine how well a finished build performs. Plarium’s Gear Overview says gear rarity determines how many substats an item starts with, while gear rank affects stat values. Its listed starting substats are: Common 0, Uncommon 1, Rare 2, Epic 3, Legendary 4, and Mythical 4, with one pre-upgraded. These are gear rarities, not Champion rarities. Consider whether you can equip the candidate well enough for the intended mode.

When to build the Epic first—and when to choose the Legendary
Build the Epic first when it fills a real gap
If an Epic supplies something your team currently lacks, addresses the content holding you back, and can be developed with your available food, books, and gear, it may be the more productive first build. That does not mean Epics are generally stronger or more valuable; it means this particular Epic is a better fit for your account’s immediate need.
Build the Legendary first when its kit is the better answer
Choose the Legendary first if its specific skills address the same bottleneck more effectively and you can afford its development. Its rarity can signal strong base stats and abilities, but the gold frame by itself is not enough to justify spending resources ahead of a more useful candidate.

Use shard odds as context, not a build guide
Plarium’s Champions page lists these probabilities: Ancient and Void Shards each have an 8.0% chance of an Epic and a 0.5% chance of a Legendary; Sacred Shards have a 94% chance of an Epic and a 6% chance of a Legendary. Void Shards can unlock only Void-affinity Champions. The page does not show a publication date, and probabilities may change, so check the in-game Summon screen for current rates.
Those figures describe acquisition, not performance. They do not show which Champion will help your team most, and they are not a reason to delay building a useful Champion you already have.

A quick decision checklist
- Name the target: Identify the next mode or stage you want to improve.
- Identify the missing job: Compare each candidate’s skills with what your existing team lacks.
- Check the upgrade requirement: Consider rank-up food, leveling, skill tomes, and gear needed to make the champion effective.
- Choose for your account: Build the Epic if it can solve the bottleneck with the resources available; choose the Legendary if its particular kit is the better answer and you can develop it.
There is no reliable universal list of which rarity to build first: the answer depends on your mode, roster, and the specific Champions available. For a named Champion recommendation, use current, mode-specific guidance and account context rather than rarity alone.
