LEGO reportedly invested several hundred million dollars since 2022 while tripling its software developer workforce to more than 1,800 people. The figure comes from secondary reporting on a Financial Times interview with LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen; no exact total is publicly established in the accessible reporting, and the developer headcount is not a count of game developers alone.
What LEGO reportedly invested—and what the figure means
MobileSyrup reported on March 11, 2025, citing a Financial Times interview, that LEGO had spent “several hundred” million dollars since 2022 as it tripled its software developer headcount to more than 1,800. MobileSyrup’s report does not provide an exact sum, and the underlying Financial Times interview is not freely accessible through that report. The amount should therefore be treated as an approximate reported investment, not a precise audited figure.
The same distinction matters for what the money covered: the reported workforce is software developers across the company, not a confirmed tally of game developers. The reporting does not establish that all of the several hundred million dollars went exclusively to video games.
LEGO is building internal game capability, not announcing a full switch
Christiansen characterized in-house game development as something LEGO was “building up,” as reproduced in Nintendo Life’s coverage of the Financial Times interview. That indicates an effort to develop internal capability, but it does not announce a specific game slate, launch schedule, studio count, or a plan to make every LEGO game internally.

Nor does the company’s stated direction mean existing partners are being dropped. LEGO Holding announced LEGO Digital Play on February 4, 2025, as an entity operating independently from the LEGO Group and focused on new digital play experiences beyond those already available. In the same announcement, it said the LEGO Group would continue developing and investing in existing branded partnerships and titles, including LEGO Fortnite. LEGO’s announcement describes parallel activity: exploring new experiences through LEGO Digital Play while continuing current partnerships and titles.
What changed after the investment report
A named leader for LEGO GAME
LEGO announced Fredrik Loving’s appointment as Senior Vice President and Global Head of LEGO GAME, effective July 1, 2025. The company cited his experience leading game studios and overseeing game development and launches. The appointment announcement establishes a leadership role, but does not give a project list or specify what share of future releases will be developed internally.

Later evidence of ongoing gaming activity
In its March 10, 2026 announcement of FY2025 results, LEGO said 2025 marked 30 years of LEGO video games and noted launches and physical sets tied to gaming franchises, including LEGO Minecraft and LEGO Super Mario. It also said LEGO Fortnite Odyssey had passed one billion player hours since launch. These are company-reported indicators of the scale and range of LEGO’s gaming activity—not confirmation of the earlier investment estimate. LEGO’s FY2025 announcement reported company-wide revenue and operating profit as well, but those financial results are not game-development spending.
